  1. Obviously the "rule" is that you're "supposed to" spend the equivalent of 2 months' salary on the ring...but that seems such an obvious contrivance of diamond companies and golddiggers that I'm curious how many people actually followed it. So, wug? One month's salary, two months, less, more? Did you set out with a percentage like that in mind and look to match it or did you go to a jeweler of appropriate scale, see what you liked, and not worry about things like that?

Also, if someone could dig up that thread from a couple years back where peachymer was yapping about how she'd never marry a guy who didn't spend at least 50k on her engagement ring, that would be awesome.

  5. You can get a nice engagement ring for ~3K or so. That's .75 carat diamond, D, E, or F Color, and VS2 or VS1...at minimum get SI1 or SI2!!

Edit: Keep in mind you can always upgrade later, which is very common among couples who have been together a long time. I know lots of people who upgrade their wives' rings at the 10 year anniversary.

  6. I bought a ring last august. 3 words of advice:

    1. Spend what you feel comfortable spending.
    2. Go quality over quantity.
    3. Take her shopping for a ring (if you can). I'm not saying buy the ring she picks out, but you'll have a guide for the style she likes.

Everyone has "a diamond guy" but there are all the same. The diamond business is a blind business, everyone gets a "deal". Just be comfortable with what you are buying and you will be good. Don't let a jeweler think you are getting the deal of the century, bc odds are you are not.

  12. about $3500. which was infinity times my monthly income at the time, b/c i didn't have a job. paid for it with online poker winnings that i made on the side during med school.
  13. but what you can afford! and ask her what she likes...I got lucky, she wanted simplicity, if your lady is not open to discuss, or bitches about what she thinks you should spend, move on.

  18. Zero, we used her mother's ring. We're both way too practical to sink money in a useless diamond.

  25. i spent 6k
  26. I think I spent about 2500 8 years ago when I proposed. Probably would have spent a little more (1-1.5k more) but I had bought my condo the previous year and had my car totaled a couple months before I got the ring.

Think it's .7 carats. E clarity, vsi. Princess cut which is what she wanted

  28. Hubby says it was around 2 mos salary at the time (9 yrs ago) - roughly $7k (but it's visually flawless, just under a carat and in a platinum antique-style setting - I'm really not a jewelry kinda girl, but I love my ring and would never upgrade it - it's perfect - even more so bc he picked it out himself and knew me well enough to know what I would like)

def go with what you're comfortable with - if she's the right girl, it won't matter :)

I believe Lady Supremo is the correct nomenclature, and pics have been posted before.

But, once again, I have no designs on making any such purchase for at least a couple years, really just interested in hearing how much stock others put into this rule in the context of their own lives not in the context of advice for my own life.
