The rest of the "2-3months salary, etc." is all crap from de Beers and the rest of the Diamond cartel. If you must buy her a ring, get something that is indeed rare, and therefore has a lasting intrinsic value.
  3. So what's a rare stone that's affordable

  5. Emeralds . . . amber . . . do some research. You can find stuff cheaper than diamonds that has more beauty and rarity if you are willing to look. Sadly, this was revelation that came to late to me, but my wife's Silver anniversary present will far outshine her engagement diamond.
  6. I wouldn't want an emerald, ruby or any other stone as an engagement ring. I'm traditional. Go figure. I do think the three month salary thing is just a marketing scheme by the diamond industry. I wouldn't pay much attention to it. You can get a nice engagement ring for less than 5K. My ex spent 8K on mine and I thought he was crazy. I would've rather had some new furniture or a nice trip somewhere. It was a beautiful ring, though :)

Agree 100%. That money could be better spent elsewhere imo.

**Especially when 50% of marriages end in divorce :(

Logically put, it is. Absurd to spend that amount of money for 1 day, or roughly 6 hours for a party.

But as I've been finding, resources costs what they cost (minus reasonable negotiating skills) and it's a matter of doing things the right way or the shitty way.
  10. 4K, anything more is silliness.
  11. 2k it also came with the wedding band which has some diamonds in it and all together I think with both bands it has 1.5 carats total. The fiance picked it out ahead of time so I knew which one to get, I was told normally the ring sells for 4.5k so I feel like I got a good deal.
  12. COSTCO

    Slice of Pizza n' a Soda for dinner = 2 Bucks~~

  22. I bought hers at Tiffany's, so needless to say I got ripped off and spent too much. But she loves it, and in the end that's all that matters.

lol, I love how Costco is advertising some 250k ring that they have one of. Does anyone who spends 250k on a single piece of jewelry do so at Costco?

    Lottery winners.
  29. You would be surprised... because Costco has such a low market-margin (volume..volume..volume) and a decent quality standard, a lot of people drop some decent coin in the jewelery department.

However, there are those that use Costco as a rent-a-centre~ for finer accessorizing. Case in point,

A Costco customer spent over 100K during a one-year time span. That customer eventually had their membership cancelled and was informed their business was no longer welcome at Costco.

Why? A closer look at the purchase history of said customer revealed that during the same time span they had returned over 100K worth of jewelery. They must have been playing dress-up for weekend balls and galas.
  30. Went to a wedding that cost 250k last Sunday. Think I would have had just as much fun at a 20k wedding. Actually most fun I've ever had at a wedding was on a 3 day cruise. Don't think it cost the bride/groom anything in exchange for bringing so many paying customers.

I did think the wedding on Sunday was very thoughtfully planned, one week before NFL started.
