should have been 5 games imo, even though his record is "clean" since his last boarding incident, he def. has a lot of "shady" hits to his name

The National Hockey League appears to be rethinking the Alexander Ovechkin hit, due to the seriousness of the injuries suffered by Chicago defenceman Brian Campbell.

Although it was first believed that no suspension would result from the hit in Sunday's 4-3 Capitals win, director of hockey operations Colin Campbell is reconsidering and has called a hearing today with Ovechkin as news comes out that Campbell could be gone long-term.

The Blackhawks defenceman could miss the rest of the season with what is suspected to be a broken collarbone and broken ribs. The call on the ice was a boarding major and a game misconduct, which means an automatic review by Campbell.

Washington's next game is Tuesday night at Florida. Campbell has until game time to suspend Ovechkin, the most physical superstar the NHL has seen in a long time.

His game has teetered over the edge of late however, resulting in injuries to opponents on a semi-regular basis.

If Ovechkin were considered a repeat offender, he would surely be suspended. But because his last boarding game misconduct came 41 games ago, that incident is erased from his record.

Game misconducts for kneeing are not considered the same thing, and therefore do not make Ovechkin a repeat offender in this case either.

  2. I think 5 would be too much. To me the hit wast overly dirty. I am not saying he shouldn't be punished but it's not like he rode him into the boards from behind. They were both going fast into a turn towards the endboard and Alex put Campbell in a very awkward spot by throwing off his balance. A very irresponsible play but nothing malicious IMO. Obv I don't like seeing contact like that 4 feet off the boards but I would save a 5 gamer for an intent to injure play. Regardless, he really needs to be more careful.
  3. Too bad they picked OV to start their campaign on dangerous hits but it was a bad hit.

  6. The NHL really needs to address what hits are allowed and what arent. In that game yesterday the announcer said not only the players dont know whats legal/illegal but the officals are not completely clear either. Its great to watch Ovie play but what really bothers me is his knee to knee hits. Thats the dirtiest shit to do and there is no reason to do it unless youre trying to hurt someone.
  7. cheap son of a bitch, 2 games is like a slap on the wrist. if you wanna make a fuckin statement give him 5 games minimum

Maxim Lapierre got 5 games for a dirty hit against San Jose a little while ago. Cam Janssen got 5 games for a terrible late hit on Matt Bradley from the Caps.

That probably deserved to be a 5-gamer too...it was pretty bad.

Does anybody know if Steve Downie got a suspension for his MMA-esque takedown of Sidney Crosby on Sunday?? He could have seriously hurt Crosby...broken leg, torn ligaments, etc.

I know Crosby has a history of diving, but this was complete garbage:

i wouldnt have a problem with that - seems like the league is ready to take a stand on the issue with all the head shots of late

yah...something needs to be done. have you seen the Downie play on Crosby that I just posted with my edit?

    if not, watch it...completely unnecessary.
  11. Hell of a game that one yesterday. Wash. can do well without Ovechkin. That was a pretty cheap hit, into the boards no less. Suspension should have been greater imo, but the superstar factor comes in.

I was on the Pens website today and it didnt say anything about Downie getting suspended. That was a disgusting. With Downies reputation I expect nothing less from him. If that wasnt intent to injure then the NHL seriously needs to get their shit together.
  14. Like someone else said, the knee on knee garbage with Ovechkin is the most disturbing part of his act.

Downie is just fucking mental - a shame too, cause he actually has more skill than the average goon.
  15. I know he's technically not a repeat offender, but I think this is the 3rd guy he's knocked out with injury this year. Ovi obviously doesn't care.

Oh and to people who are saying ovechkin should get less for his superstar factor: he took out the highest paid player on the blackhawks for the rest of the season ~15 games. It's not like it was Brent Sopel, the superstar factor should cancel out if anything. Imagine if he did this to Crosby or Datsyuk or some national TV boy.
  16. Pittsburgh plays Boston this week; with all the flack the Bruins got for not retaliating before, Cooke better have his head on a swivel.
  17. He did the knee on knee hit in the playoffs last year to Gonchar. It was complete bullshit he wasnt suspended. But there is no way the NHL is gonna suspend Ovie in the playoffs with the matchup of Crosby/Ovechkin. They would lose ratings and alot of money. However if it was some scrub they would have no prob handing out a suspension. The rules need to apply to everyone no matter what name is on your jersey. Its one thing to play passionate/aggressive but its not hard to tell when youre playing to hurt others.

Im sure there will be a fight early in the game with Cooke but no reason to take him out. Crosby/Malkin are the ones that need to be paying attention.
  19. We had a big debate in our poker game about all the bad hits recently. There have been some ugly hits but i still think a lot of the players are not protecting themselves when they go to the boards. Guys are turning their backs instead of taking a hit and the players are just generally more reckless imo. Maybe its the way theyre being coached idk.
  20. how does ovie only get 2 when lapierre gets 4? the whole league needs to get this sorted out ASAP..
  21. here is a list of some "questionable" hits by Ovie compiled by tsn.ca w/ some video links

    Past incidents involving Ovechkin include:

    - a knee-on-knee hit on the Hurricanes' Tim Gleason

    - an infamous knee on Sergei Gonchar during 2009 playoffs, causing the Penguins' defenceman to miss several games

    - a hit on the Lightning's Jamie Heward that saw him leave the ice on a stretcher

    - a check that sent Patrick Kaleta of the Sabres into the boards face-first

    - a slew foot on the Thrashers' Rich Peverley
    - a big blindside hit on Daniel Briere of the Sabres

  22. I love how all the Ovechkin haters just think that he should be suspended 5 games for that hit. Pretty Absurd seeing as the guy was in the process of turning around when Ovie hit him and he also tripped. Its not like he was 1 foot from the wall.

Craig Adams didn't get suspended for this hit and this was 10x as dirty, not to mention the hit that Savard got last week.

  23. good fuckin him

also the fact that he gets almost a quarter mil in just 2 game... ridiculous

Overchkin finished his "check" by extending his arms and basically throwing Campbell toward the boards.

And I love AO and hate the Blackhawks...that was just dirty.

Some guys just need to learn how to stay on their feet. lol

Yea, it was semi dirty, but some of the hits that we have seen recently are 100000x dirtier and the only reason he got kicked out was because it was a nationally televised game. Notice what the Announcers are saying too.

Malkin will be scratched and i doubt the Bruins go after Crosby after
    A) He seemed genuinely concerned about Savy
    B) Bergeron and him were teammates on Canada and seem to like each other

that being said if Matt Cooke plays it will be a shit show. Colin Campbell is going to be at the game and I would not put it past a Boston fan to deck him if he steps out of the press box on to the general concourse
  27. haha that hit on crosby was hilarious! GO FLYERS! SEE YOU IN THE PLAYOFFS SIDNEY

edit: na in all seriousness though that was a dirty play by downie, but im okay with the ovechkin hit, 2 games is fine. they need to make the rules more clear.

  29. Good. Get a few games rest in Ovi since the East is already wrapped.

Apparently, the NHL would rather he take deliberate headshots with the intent to injure...maybe he'll be a clean player and do that next time around.

    Blah blah blah repeat offender....

hate on haters cup is coming to DC.

    Edit: solid 3rd hawks bwahahahahahaha

  30. yea def was not a dirty hit. cant blame a guy if his opponent loses an edge and goes crashing in the boards.
