Yeah look at him now. Touring with huge superstars like Mike Jones....only one thing to say: L O L!
-
Paul Wall, got so much shine in his mouth, reminds you of a disco ball!!!

-
none of those losers will be around. they are gonna be like all rapers of that type. like lil jon and stuff. idiots that only say like 3 things and they are in everyone of their songs. like mike jones. all he does is say chyea and give out his phone nymber and talk about how things use to be "back then," compared to now. they are garbage.
-
jesus frank, are you saying liljon is no good? already done? not gonna be around? you must not know anything about hip hop.
d50 -
if you think lil john and paul wall are good "lyricists" then YOU dont know hip hop. It's actually laughable if you are being serious
-
WHHAAAATT? WHHAAAATTTTTTTT?
-
Paul Wall is on the list of people I would like to hit. His lyrics are so unoriginal and I'm sure he'll fade out fast. If not rap truly has gone to crap. Bring back the greats!!!!!! I'd rather listen to greatest hits over and over again than most of this new crap that is out there.
-
Paul Wall's CD is actually very good. He doesn't really have any catch phrases like you think, all of his lyrics are unique for the most part. All of the beats are very different as well, and most of them are amazing.
-
You people think you know hip hop and all you do is yell Pac! Biggie!! and that's the extent of your argument. I have listened to it all from the most obscure underground shit to the most mundane over played commercial rap both from the standpoint of a someone who enjoys the music, and as an analyst of the poetics and aesthetics of the art.
Lil' Jon is in no way a lyricist. He made a name for himself as a producer, and now has the luxury of being able to yell the first thing that comes into his head (WHAT!????!! YEAH?!!??!). Paul Wall, on the other hand has been putting together some pretty well crafted lyrics on the underground and with Chamillionare (another sick up-and-comer) for a while now. I base this on the ability to create unique verses of densely layered similies, the poetics of his verses, and his "flow" among other things.
I'll give you the best current lyricists in the mainstream:
Jay-Z: No one is better (possibly ever). The depth he gives simple lines with sustained analogies is incredible
Eminem: He's kinda lost in his own world these days, but listen to some of his less popular stuff. There's a song I think called The Takeover in which he has some absolutley sick verses.
Fabolous: The flow is so buttery smooth, and he backs it up w/ some of the most original lines EVER.
Paul Wall: OK, so most of his stuff is about the usual; drugs, hoes, money, bling, whatever. He gives it a whole new twist, and that's tough to do when you're rapping about something that EVERY other rapper has rapped about on ten albums before you.
Talib: Maybe not always as original in his one liners as some of those above, but the overall sustained effort he puts into each song he delivers is impressive.
I didn't start this thread with any intention of getting into this, but I have spent alot of time w/ this stuff, including digging pretty deep into the poetics of hip hop for plenty of classes in college, and I enjoy the debate. I want to know who you guys (and girls) think is good. Right now, this is who I am listening to: All of the above, Slim Thug, Mike Jones, Lil' Flip (one of the greatest freestylers) and some other random Texas rap. Alot of Lil' Wayne (also crazy freestyler), Common, Pharrell, Game, Mike Shinoda- The Linkin Park guy, I think he just released a rap album, The Roots, and Digable Planets among others.
On a final note, there is a reason why you hear a line in multiple songs, and it is twofold. The first reason is strictly $$$ and the second is the collaboration of alot of these rappers. Take a line like Paul Wall's line about his mouf' is summin' like a disco ball. This has found it's way into at least three songs of his that I know of. In the first, it really was a good line, original, funny, and it flowed. Unfortunatley, for whatever reason, he used it again in another song. Now, there is the recently released "Grillz" song by Nelly, and Paul Wall's verse uses the line AGAIN. In these sort of collaborative songs, there is a need to put a mark on them quickly and to hook the audience while the fad is hot. Paul Wall is told to use his most famous line to sell the song. The exec's see a formula and they plug in a line. I think he even might have it on one of his more popular radio songs as well, and this, again is just the brass saying make a song we can sell. We don't care what's on the rest of your album, just give us two or three singles. -
A I, Chamillionare OWNS he has some hectic beats
TheUnlucky1 -
ok, all paul wall says is what it do in every song. then he starts talkin about his gay ass homo buddies dj mike watts and dyke jones. lil jon is garbarge and u all know that. i just hate rap that sux ass. how come no one listens to good rap like 2 pac and biggie and bone thugs. rappers that say a variety of things like smoking weed and screw bitches. stuff like that......... wait a second, all raps garbage. end of thread.
