For the past month or so my laptop has been running hot, extremely hot. The fan runs on high constantly, and if I'm running too many programs the entire machine just shuts down. I emailed compaq support and they told me to update BIOS, which i did, and of course this didn't help. It's less than a year old so it's still under warranty. So before i send it in for an overhaul, any ideas on what could cause an overheating problem like this? I prop the back end up off the coffee table to give the fans some air, but this doesn't help much either. I'd really like to avoid sending it in, since then I'd be stuck for two weeks with my shitty old desktop with a tiny screen resolution.
Update: I fixed my pc. It turns out that the air intake pipes were blocked by debris. Now it runs like new. Why didn't i think of this before? -
wtf, did you over clock the processor? something is wrong with it, it shouldn't run that hot.
-
over clock the processor? no clue what that means
-
Not sure prices, but my brother uses a fan underneath his laptop that works well and solves that problem pretty well.
-
over clocking the processor makes it go faster, which makes it run extrermly hot, which is probably why they made you go into bios....
-
ok, that makes sense. Is it possible for me, pretty clueless about this sort of problem, to fix?
-
tried that too, no help.
-
If you wanted too, you could get a better fan, but since you're still covered under warranty, just let them pay for it. But it sounds like that is your only system.
-
alright, thanks. I can set my old desk top, but good bye multi-tabling for two weeks.

One of my older laptops had that exact same problem. To get round it, I stacked 4 coasters (you can use a book or whatever too) and put it under the top right foot of my laptop (the fan is just below the foot). This created more room between the fan and the surface, allowing for more room to cool and it didn't overheat after that. It's a little annoying at first having the laptop on somewhat of a tilt, but you get used to it. Hope it helps.

My brand new laptop does the same this and it is under a year old. HP support had me do the same thing. Do you have an Athelon 64 bit processor?
-
lol, 4 coasters for me too. But it still shuts off occasionally, usually while watching porn.
-
I have a pentium 4 processor, and mine is also less than a year old.
-
what GHz is your P4?
-
3.2

ok, is it that extreme edition? I remember when we first started selling those on Dell's we had them for a month, then Intel stopped making them because they overheated like crazy. Send that mofo in, they need to pop a mac daddy fan on that shizzle
-
I don't remember anything about "extreme edition" when i bought it, and i don't see anything like that on the invoice. Same as hyper-threading?
-
lol, shizzle
-
extreme edition was the next level up from the HT it was a little faster, and they had to fix it. I remember people getting pissed cuz their shit was delayed cuz of intel's fuck up. I can ask my friend later tonight if that one was jacked too, he used to work at Intel, and is a complete computer nerd.
-
thanks, man.
-
i don't have a penis, but ok man
-
Shes soo lying about the penis. Paula you know anythig about the Athelon 64?
-
lol I hate you NP why would i help you? bwahahahahahahhahaha
-
lol, sorry, the use of "shizzle" threw me off.
-
OK I'll let you win a heads up match.
