I'd like to hear some careers or jobs that anyone has that you really love or enjoy a lot and why.
Edited By: DOITDEALER Nov 11th, 2010 at 02:39 PM
Also, if you don't have this job now/yet, what do you dream of doing?
I'm currently about to start my 5th season as a professional ski instructor in Park City, UT and I absolutely love it. I ski over 130 days a ski season and instruct probably around 350 people a season and make skiing more enjoyable for them and it's super rewarding teaching people how to become better at such an awesome sport.
The problem is that it's seasonal work and it's not a super way to make a living because of all the down time.
Reason: my job is.... -
You've seen me at my job. What's not to like about what I do
-
after graduating college last december i was applying at a bunch of jobs i didnt really have much interest in the city i was living in. i came across a mobile marketing job opportunity that i ended up getting an offer for. i started back this past april. i basically travel the country providing free health screenings in a rv/bus. the pay is good, and they put us in decent hotels when theres often even dinner 3-4 times a week. plus a per diem along with my salary.

there are so many places i've seen so far that i wouldn't otherwise go to unless i save up and wait who knows how many years. but so far i've seen yellowstone, the grand canyon, have gone white water rafting in montana, partied in vegas, seen many awesome areas of colorado, and of course the party spots in the cities we're in. it's a great way to save while gaining tremendous experience in my field of public relations/marketing/business. i love what i do, and it sure made up for all of those interviews/stress i went through prior to this job. -
I have arguably the worst job ever. I usually wake up at 3:30 AM, drive a fucking hour to work, and then sit around and wait for the weather to cooperate. Sure, the money is great, but I risk my life everyday navigating the perilous sea.

If anyone ever tries to tell you professional surfing is a great gig, they're lying to you. I wish I would've gone to grad school. -

What I'm looking forward to the most is that many people whom I'm working with are foreign, so I get to add new perspectives and see different business styles; furthermore, I love analyzing data in a manner which allows me to make decisions strategically. Also, I get to travel domestically and internationally for free, as part of my job and as a perk for being an employee so I should have a chance to put more stamps on my passport.
The last industry I worked in was similar in that I got to interact with a variety of people and analyze data, but it was an area of finance that didn't allow me to make decisions as objectively as I felt like I need to in order to make the best decisions. I really hate how much certain areas of finance and sales can be intertwined sometimes, almost to a fault. -
I like Network Engineering. It's cool to build and maintain something that people come to rely on. I love every part of it. Designing a network to suit the needs of the customer. The Christmas mourning feeling you get when your equipment arrives. Making all the configurations from scratch. Testing it out in the lab & working out the bugs is like solving a thousand puzzles everyday. Installing the equipment into the racks & making the cabling look as pretty as you can (it really can be an artform: http://royal.pingdom.com/2008/01/24/...g-becomes-art/). When you get the ATO (Authority to Operate) it's like sending your child away to school on their 1st day, but you get to stay & watch them all day long. The feeling of pride you get when people compliment your work without even knowing it "Wow, this is so much faster than before." I enjoy being helpful when folks need network access changes & I'm the only one that can do it. It's fun to makes all the little tweaks & changes as your network grows.
It's sad when you have to transition your network to someone new. It sucks to watch them make changes to it that you disagree with. I love the job, & I can't wait to demobilize & get back to it. -
my dream job is to own my own casino. If TX gets their act together on legalizing it, I think I have a pretty good chance.

Thanks for the compliment. I thought Houston would have one by now. Apparently, the location is already picked out. Between LA and OK a lot of people see money going out the door that could be kept within the state.

Yeah, I grew up in Houston so it would be great to go back home and open up a small bar type casino. I have considered here in NV but the market is already saturated and its not worth it.
-
Being either a travel writer or journalist on international politics would be ideal for me. I should write more :(
-
i would love to own my own poker room with around 20ish tables and a full service bar/sports bar attached.

I did my dream job for 15 years. Marketing for record labels...got to work with some of the greatest bands of all time. And some amazing young up and coming bands as well. Then the music business went to shit, the bean counters took over and I basically lost the passion for it. So I started my own company with some partners. Its a poker training site. Life is good.
I suggest the book "Crush It!". Basically argues that in this day and age there is no reason not to have a job that you absolutely cannot wait to get up and do everyday. -
are we going to have robot janitors, trashmen? there is a reason. but yeah we have to leave the shitty jobs for people with no passion in life.

I'm 22, I dk what to do with my life, living it and not caring about shit is fun for now. hmmmmmmmmm I need a career. -
I rarely post in OT (but lurk) but wanted to respond.
I've got my dream job (high school Principal).
It's all I had dreamed of for over a decade.
I make great $, work with wonderful teachers and awesome kids; couldn't be better. -
Hmmmm. Are you allowed to spank kids when they are being bad? That might be my dream job as well.

I am a machinist for a privately owned DOD contractor, we design, engineer, build unmanned aerial targets for the Navy, Airforce, and allied countries. I have been a machinst for around 20 years or so and love what I do. Love to make very close tolerance components out of once a raw, nothing piece of steel or aluminum or whatever. Below is a couple pics of the "planes" we make.

I love my job. I am a contract program manager for a medium sized company and get to do a little bit of everything. I do a lot of business development, some marketing, hiring and firing, program management, project management, cost accounting, etc. I get to travel about 50% and go to about a half dozen different countries and almost every state. It ties in nicely with my MBA and lets me cover the whole spectrum of management. Also, I have significant influence regarding the strategic direction of the company, which is always nice.

My salary is pretty good, I work from home when I'm not traveling, and I have the opportunity for a solid bonus every year.
My company has been investing in me a lot, paying for 1/2 of my MBA and sending me to various schools for classes and professional certifications.
I'm in a very good situation in that I'm far and away the youngest program manager in the company and feel that I've got a bright future in this company and this industry, as long as I don't completely step on my dick.
Anyway, we're always looking for good analysts and project managers. Hit me up if you're looking for work. -
Interviews over brah. But I'm definitely stealing the bolded line for my next one
