so if i buy a complete beater cargo van, that runs and has a decent engine and transmission but other than that is pretty much a complete pos, how much can i expect to spend fixing it up.
it's an 86 dodge ram van extended if that matters. say i can pick up the van for under a grand if i sink another couple grand in it can i make it pretty nice.
basically i just want a beater to drive cross country to move a bunch of shit with.
any thoughts? -

yea, you really have to tell us what were dealing with here.
if your planning on drivng it cross country or long trips or whatever, this sounds like a terrible idea... -
I need more information on this van immediately, if not sooner. As imhooks mentioned, you really should PM me with any van questions, van advice, van stories or n00dz of vans.
The only things you should need to do to fix up this van:
*Paint it white
*Paint over any windows into the cargo area (white obv)
*Remove radio
*Remove air conditioning
*Replace any cloth or carpet with vinyl or rubber
You want it to look kinda like this (obv different body & grill on an '86):

You should be able to paint the entire van with 3 gallons or less. Please feel free to use house paint from Sherwin Williams and a roller; there is no need to take your Contravan to an autobody shop at any time for any reason. My best estimate for "fix-up" costs (with roller and 3 gallons) is $40 (if you get a decent roller you might be pushing $50).
BTW, the Chrysler Corporation has put together some fine Contravans in its day (as pictured), but the guiding light in Contravanland always has been and always will be the Ford E-series.
