  1. How many more stories about the Phillies team, organization, and fan being classless are going to be released?

DENVER -- Binoculars in the bullpen? Major League Baseball didn't like what it saw and has told the Philadelphia Phillies to knock it off.

The Phillies insisted Wednesday they weren't trying to steal signs when bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer was caught on camera peering through binoculars from the bullpen bench at Coors Field earlier this week.

Manager Charlie Manuel told The Associated Press that Billmeyer was simply watching Philadelphia catcher Carlos Ruiz set up defensively Monday night.

FSN Rocky Mountain, the flagship broadcaster of the Colorado Rockies, showed Billmeyer using the binoculars to peer in on Colorado catcher Miguel Olivo while the Phillies were at bat in the top of the second inning.

It also showed a quick image of Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino in the dugout on the bullpen phone in the top of the second.

"We were not trying to steal signs," Manuel said. "Would we try to steal somebody's signs? Yeah, if we can. But we don't do that. We're not going to let a guy stand up there in the bullpen with binoculars looking in. We're smarter than that."

Olivo said Billmeyer's actions could tarnish the two-time defending NL champions' image.

"If you're a good team and you win, I think you don't need to do that because they got good hitters, they got good players," Olivo said. "If it helps them, if they don't get caught, then whatever. If they get caught, then they're going to pay for it."
  2. repostaments, who gives a shit, and how is a bull pen coach going to be able to tip the batter the pitches in a matter of seconds?

    Sorry but its bullshit.

Further down the article there were rumors Philly had a hidden camera in the outfield! Crazyness!

  4. bull shit that the batter could get tipped from a camera, the bullpen coach, or anyone other than another player at 2nd base... its seconds between sign and pitch, and you know it.

These stories of stealing signs always make me laugh, 99% of them are total bullshit.

(Pitchers tipping their pitches is a totally different story though.)

I love how peice of their evidence is that victorino was on the phone lol.
  6. <span>Why have the #Phillies been accused of stealing signs? "Because we beat them," Manuel said. "That's why. Keep crying."</span>
  7. I hear the Phillies hired a new advanced scout

Best money Philly ever spent, imo.
  10. Stealing the pitch signs is not a matter of being able to relay it to the batter in that particular at bat or the next pitch even, it is a matter of collecting information on how an opposing team is pitching to that particular batter. it is information for future at bats against that pitcher or other pitchers.

Having said that, I laugh at other coaches in our 12 year old age group who go to great lengths to hide their pitch signs as they sit on their bucket at the dugout, like we are going to do anything with that information. Some of these guys touch their face, chin, ears, multiple times, nearly poke their eyes out for god's sake. We on the other hand let the catchers call a great portion of the game so they gain an understanding of what to do and why and when we do call pitches our signs are pretty simple two two touches one for the pitch and one for the location.

As for what Manual said, I seriously doubt Jim Tracy is a sour grapes guys so what he said is bullshit as it concerns the Rockies anyway. Obviously what they did is wrong and Manual is like most guilty parties who take the offensive when caught.

not so much....if you configure the signals, one of the base coaches can usually pick up the signs and tip the hitter as to off speed/FB or inside or outside. also helps in steal situations too, use a sound as a code ect...this is done quite frequently.

I doubt Manuel is guilty. The man never minces words and never spews bullshit.
  13. who cares if they are trying to steal signs, i mean to me this is gamesmanship, right? its common knowledge that this starts at pee wee leagues, make your signals uncrackable.
  14. Hey, guess what?

Every team in the league looks at how other pitchers pitch players. Any good hitter can stand there after a game and tell you exactly what pitches were thrown to him in each at bat, what the count was, etc. A mediocre hitter may not be able to do that, but to also think that the Phillies are the only team in the universe of MLB to track pitches during a game, then you are mistaken.

I don't think that getting caught excuses it, just that the Phillies are not the first team to be accused of it, and they won't be the last.

I actually find it quite amusing.

good article about it from FOX...

<h3>DENVER</h3> The Philadelphia Phillies have won back-to-back NL pennants and were World Champions in 2008.

They have a talented roster, but is there more to their success than talent?
<h3>POWER RANKINGS</h3> Where does your team rank? Check out this week's Power Rankings.

Major League <nobr id="itxt_nobr_2_0">Baseball</nobr> issued a warning to the Phillies on Tuesday concerning accusations that bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer was stealing signs during Monday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

"We have looked at the video and talked to the Phillies about the actions of their bullpen coach,’’ a Major League Baseball official told FOXSports.com.

"We found the evidence inconclusive on what was being done, but we have spoken to the Phillies about the situation, and the umpires have been told to be on full alert as to what is going on.’’

The Rockies are the second team that's filed a complaint about the Phillies, according to a source close to the situation. It's believed the New York Mets made a similar accusation after the Phillies knocked around Mets left-hander Johan Santana on May 2.
<h3>PLAYER OF THE WEEK</h3> How's your guy doing? Vote now for AT&T's Player of the Week.

The incident in Colorado was brought to light during the telecast of the Rockies-Phillies game on Monday night by FSN Rocky Mountain, which showed that with the Phillies hitting in the top of the second inning, Philadelphia bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer was using binoculars to look in at Rockies catcher Miguel Olivo.

The video also showed Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino in the dugout on the bullpen phone.

The Phillies claimed that Billmeyer was evaluating the Philadelphia catcher, according to a source, although the evidence wouldn't support that claim; Billmeyer was using the binoculars during the top of the second hitting, when the Phillies were hitting — which means Miguel Olivo of the Rockies was the catcher.
  15. They admit to using binoculars from the bullpen, but say it was to look at their own catcher, yet FSN has them on camera looking in at the Rockies catcher, not their own catcher. They got caught. Pretty simple and straight forward.

Exactly, can't bullshit your way out of this one. Just admit it.

    Phillies cheat.

  17. You are correct Jester but by stealing the actual signs you know exactly what they are trying to do against a hitter pitch and location. When you just observe the actual pitch you can only track the result and not the intent. And it is a much easier way to do it, unless you get caught.
  18. its not that hard to go ahead and switch up the signs mid game either... like I said, I don't condone it, but I am also in the camp that every MLB team has tried at some point to steal signs, and the Phillies getting caught doesn't make the team the pariah of MLB by any means.

They have them on camera, using binoculars when the Phils were at bat. How can we possibly know what he was actually looking at?

Hell, there could have been an enormous blond with big tits sitting behind the backstop.

How come every article I read on this from neutral sources say that stealing signs is as old as baseball.

Sure, Philly is the pariah of MLB and should be held up as the model for everything that is wrong in the game.

I'm totally on board with all that, but at least we have that World Series banner hanging up in the stadium.

    It's called circumstantial evidence.

Ernie goes into the kitchen to eat one of the cookies he baked that morning. He sees the cookie jar is empty. He sees the cookie monster standing next to the counter on which the empty cookie jar sits. The cookie monster has cookie crumbs on his face. Who ate the cookies? It could have been Miss Piggy. Well maybe not, does she have big tits?

I do not think the organization is classless.

But if I were a Cardinals fan I would be ripshit that Ruben Amaro overpaid Ryan Howard by like 20% and just jacked up the price astronomically on Albie.
