  1. This is why I hate that I have to root for this team. I love all these players but it would be tremendously unjust to me if these owners ever won anything. Like, seriously travestyThey've never gone out of their way one time to try to get over the hump since i've known what the fuck baseball was. Now they piss of the only home grown starting pitcher this team has had since Chris Short, for what, a couple hundred grand?

Hamels: Phillies contract is "low blow"

Cole Hamels has one hope: that Phillies fans don't wake up tomorrow thinking he is greedy.

That said, the left-hander made it very clear today that he feels disrespected with the $500,000 salary the Phillies renewed his contract at today.

Calling it a "low-blow," Hamels said he was "caught off-guard" with the gap between what he and agent John Boggs felt was a fair reward for his performance last season, when he went 15-5 with a 3.39 ERA and 177 strikeouts.

Hamels also said that he will likely remember the perceived slight down the road.

"They do want to keep you happy, and that will affect down the line with certain things that come up because you can’t just all of a sudden throw everything out at (a player) at the last second and think that’s really going to make him happy," Hamels said, "because he’s still got check marks for what they didn’t do in the years before."

Hamels said he was seeking a couple hundred thousand dollars more than the Phillies offered.

"I felt like it wasn’t necessarily equal compensation for what I do and for what I can do," Hamels said.

Stay tuned for more on this. . .
  2. Standard procedure. Look what the Brewers did to Prince Fielder and he had 50 hr 120 rbi.

This is why teams have locked up their younger players to mulit yr contracts earlier and earlier. Some prime examples are Grady Sizemore and Tulowitski. If they dont lock them early on then they hit arbitration and have a situation like whats going on with Ryan Howard who got a massive pay out, hence making him unaffordable for the Phillies now in the upcoming years.

If you understand the business in baseball then you will come to respect teams like the Indians and Rockies and A's who have a specific system for their minor leagues and young major league players. They build an enitre organization from the ground up threw the minors. Teams such as the Red Sox and Theo Epstein have a ton of respect for those said teams and GM and he is tryin very hard to get inline with these types of programs.

However someone like Epstein has more money he realizes the benefits of builing from with in and not buying out of mistakes. Its saves money in the long run.
  3. 5th highest payroll last year....but can see your point sky. we dont spend money wisely at all. although that HUGE contract rolen wanted and got looks like a bust today.
  4. as a phillies fan i get so pissed off because we have a great young core but management looks like they have no desire to keep them happy with the contracts they deserve. While I think they offered Ryan Howard a decent contract (you're making millions of dollars to play a sport, Latrell) I think that in cases like this why not give him what he wants, he's been a solid young pitcher. With our luck he'll be a free agent and go pitch for the Braves or some shit and pound the hell out of us every time we see him for the next 10 years
  5. Ladies and Gentlemen, your 2007 National League East Champions!

I guess it's all or nothing this year. At least our new closer isn't starting the year off with an inju... oh shit.
  6. and at least Flash's arm isn't ready to fall off...

  7. the point is that they cheap their way out of everything. This team is so close, a reliable SP away, and what do we get? Kris Benson, who cam opt out if he wants before spring training ends.

Fuck Bill Giles. I can't wait till he dies and these owners sell this team.

  8. 5th highest payroll last year, and we are still cheap, lock up Hamels he is well deserved more then what they offered him...
  9. I'm not expecting them to have a Yankees/Mets/Red Sox payroll, but there is no reason they shouldn't have the flexibility to add a 3-5 million dollar player if e could get us over the hump. And they don't need to insult key players. I mean, Hamels is a top 5 SP in the game, and all he wanted was a couple extra hundred thousand. It's not like he was asking for what he'd get in arbitration or on the open market.
