Title says it all. How do you go about picking a favorite team for sports where you've never had a "favorite" team (or followed the sport at all). I've recently gotten really into hockey and baseball and obviously want to start rooting for a team.. Don't want to bandwagon pick. Thoughts?

PM LakersnYanks

well, u r from NY, so obv pick the Red Sox and Bruins
-
just watch the sport, itll come naturally
i personally liked tomlinson when he got into the nfl so i picked the chargers as my favorite team, now i get to support him, rivers, merriman and yell at how much they suck for being so good -
Vanderbilt
-
Gayness of the name obv.
Hockey - Oilers
Football - Packers
Baseball - Pirates
Basketball - Pistons -
Local teams.
Find teams that are fun to watch.
Find teams that have a fan base in your area (especially if they have a specific sports bar where they all hang out).
Small market teams that have been successful.
Avoid any big market team - no NY, Chicago, Boston or LA teams or teams with a recent history of winning (Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils).
Recommendations:
Baseball - Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, Colorado Rockies
Hockey - Montreal Canadiens (yes, they've won a lot, but have been mediocre for years), Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks -
You should latch on the worst team in the sport.. Then when they do win. It will feel pretty special.. I mean your getting into Baseball and Hockey. Dont become a Yankees or Penguins fan.. Thats pretty bad. Latch onto the Maple Leafs and the Nationals.. They are both really bad.. But are in big markets for their sport so you know at some point they will get better and probably win at some point in your life.

I recently decided I wanted to pick an English Premier League team. I didn't want to pick the teams at the top so Chelsea and Man U were out. I heard bad things about Liverpool fans so they were out. Then out of the remaining teams I chose based on how much I liked their colors/uniforms and how much I liked playing Fifa with them. In the end Aston Villa was my choice.

When I got into soccer, I chose Newcastle United, a team that appeared to be on the rise. Oops.
That is the criteria I would use, find a team in each of the leagues you are interested in that is on the cusp, or might soon be, and watch them grow. For the NHL, the Blackhawks would be a great pick. They are entertaining to watch, and should continue to improve on their way to vying for the championship. -
Bad move im a liverpool fan and can tell you we are the best football supporters in the world. lol

best thing to do is find out how many fans there are of each team at your local bar. No point picking a team you'll never be able to watch on TV in the pub. Otherwise you'll have to stay home to watch games and inevitably you'll end up having to talk to your wife thus spoiling the game and any fun associated with it.
Go Cowboys!!! -
You're from New York. You are blessed with being in one of the best places to live and be a baseball fan. For chrissakes, root for the Yankees or the Mets. Being Yankee fan is rewarding - the ownership is committed to keeping the fans happy - but you'll get shit from people who don't like the Yankees. If you must root for an underdog (i.e., you enjoy losing), go with the Mets. They're not usually as bad as they were this year.
-
Be a Florida Marlins fan. They're good but not great and every once in a while they jump up and win a world Series. Or jump on the Miami Heat before they get LeBron next off season.
-
it really needs to be a team you will get to see frequently. So look at TV schedules and go with the team not in your home market that is on TV alot in your area. If you get WGN, root for the Cubs. They are always on TV and will consistently break your heart but you can't help but love them. Gl on hockey. I guess whatever team is hot will be the one you see the most on Versus network
-
puke!!! I agree with your points but hate that they were about the yankees..lol

Don't pick a favorite. Wait for a favorite to pick you.

We helped someone become a nuggets fan last year just before the season and they went to the conference finals because of HIM. It was divine intervention. I think with one more fan this year they go to the finals! Hurry up! Were undefeated. Weeee!

Pick the avalanche then. Last To first so far and we won't tell anyone you're a few games late shhhhhh!

even though I am a Thrashers fan and this team is my rival. I really enjoy watching the caps play. Ovechkin is just that good (even tho he's injured atm). If your trying to get into hockey and not get bored watching it on tv then the caps will be your best bet. Exciting team with TONS of talent and offense that plays great hockey.
If not them, like someone said earlier, Blackhawks are fun to watch and have the nicest jerseys in the game imo and for the love of god DO NOT be a canadiens fan.
If you dont like either, I say go with the Kings, Blues or Maple Leafs (even though they suck right now). -
I may be studying abroad in London next year, can someone point me at which football club (idk if thats right, just be happy I didn't say "soccer team" imo) I should root for while there? I used to "root" for Arsenal because I <3 Thierry Henry but obv he's not there anymore so clean slate.
Requirements:
-team should be based in London so I can go to games
-team should have passionate fans with dedicated bars so I can go get pissed and sing songs and whatnot
