  1. Trying to help nephew with his math homework and came across this problem. If you roll an eight sided dice and your friend rolls a four sided dice, what are the odds that you will roll a higher number than your friend. The answer i got was 68.75%. Can any of you geeks tell me if this is right?
  2. ok well look at it like this, 32 total possibilities (4 for him times 8 for you)

If you roll a 5,6,7,8 you're going to be higher (thats 16)
If you roll a 4, you beat 3 of his rolls (19)
    Roll a 3, you beat 2 of his (21)
    Roll a 2, you beat 1 of his (22)

22/36, whatever that comes out to be is your answer
  3. i think davols mistyped the 36 and means 32 (as he said, that's total possibilities)

    22/32 = 68.75%
     2
  4. Ahh ok thanks guys I was surprisingly right it appears

  5. 22/32*

    OP was right

  6. outcomes in the negative are:

    him: 4, 3, 2
    you: 3,2,1; 2,1; 1.

    .25*.125+.25*.125+.25*.125+.25*.125+.25*.125+.25*. 125

    1 - above = .8125

you're not taking into account times when the dice roll the same number

don't know why you'd bother trying to do it that way when it's so straightforward

So..you're not really trying to help him with his homework....You are actually DOING IT for him. Hows your (er, his) science project coming along? You going with the erupting volcano again?
