  1. I'm looking to make some short vids to post on youtube and the like, indoor and outdoor and some may involve some fast moving action.

Basically wondering if there is a standard cheaper video camera that will work for this, that's somewhat easy to use and I can get everything on my computer easily for editing, adding sound, etc...

For instance what's the big difference between a Cannon S95 and a Cannon M30 (besides the size and shape difference)?

Also, what are thoughts on buying something used as opposed to new? Any other things to consider?

    Any help much appreciated.
  2. I'm new to photography so I don't really know what I am talking about, anybody is free to correct me. Looks like one is an upper end point and shoot camera that happens to do HD video, also does raw which is pretty sweet to have that option for pictures. The other is a video camera (which I assume happens to take pictures). I didn't look into the camcorder but I'm sure it is more designed towards video and has more video features, probably a better microphone, all around geared towards video. google reviews of both cameras and see what fits your needs and what cameras are their competition, maybe a different camera is a better option

Cameras are easy to use. Adding sound and editing shouldn't be a problem, you'll just have to learn how to work a software program if you don't know already.

If you are going to spend $700 on a camera you may want to consider a dslr. I don't know anything about camcorders so don't really know which is better but It will give you a lot more freedom in the future if video or photography is something you want to get into. Down the road instead of wanting to upgrade to a new camcorder you have the ability to upgrade the lens. Fact that you can change lenses on a dslr makes it very versatile. I just bought the t3i which is supposed to take very good quality video. I have the hardware to control every aspect of my exposures and take very high quality images now as well, it's just a matter of me learning. After taking 10's of thousands of pictures over the past 30 months with a point and shoot I really wish I had bought the DSLR years ago, instead of a few weeks ago. The quality of my past images to my future expectations once I learn what I am doing are not going to be close.

In the end depends what you want out of it. If you just want to throw videos on youtube for fun the point and shoot should be fine, it looks to be a good camera. I was really happy with my point and shoot which isn't as nice. If you really want to make a hobby of it and are only interested in video maybe the camcorder is best. If you are interested in both photography and video look into getting a dslr. You'll be thankful you bought it over a top end point and shoot if it's something you are serious about
