Just to get an idea of what I like. The last 5 I read are:
1. The Road by Cormac McCarthy - 7/10
2. Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane - 8/10
3. Beyond The Shadows by Brent Weeks - 7.5/10
4. Angels & Demons by Dan Brown - 9.5/10
5. The Law of Nines by Terry Goodkind - 8.5/10 -
Does not compute.

Anyways, I agree with Life of Pi, it's awesome. I also always highly recommend Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy, especially if you're into fantasy. -
Haha yeah seriously.

And for the record, Bubba recommended His Dark Materials to me, and I really enjoyed it.
I just finished Pillars of the Earth, and I really liked it. Highly recommended. -
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller - 10/10

Cool, I read mostly fiction, and a wide variety at that, but fantasy is what I'll always love best. Have you read HDM, or were you just referring to LoP?
-
*ashamed* I haven't read HDM yet. I saw the Golden Compass movie... and loved it.

Heard that it is very disappointing when compared to the book and I've been wanting to get my hands on the trilogy for awhile now. Might scope out ebay and see if I can pick them up on the cheap.
Regardless, most fantasy like that is stuff I really enjoy. -
I only read The Road because of all the hype I heard about it on here. Don't get me wrong it was good but I guess I was expecting more. Although it was really well written I just found the story to be slow and the writing style/layout difficult to enjoy.

Although Dan Brown isn't the greatest writer when it comes to his style of prose, I found A&D really really interesting, a real page turner that I couldn't put down. Kinda blew my mind how he could think up such a great interesting story. I highly recommend this book to any1 who likes fast paced thrillers.
I am a big fan of fantasy. Especially like Goodkind, Brooks, Martin, Jordan. How does Pullmans writing/storytelling compare to these guys? I'll probably check em out. -
The movie sucks, and not really because it doesn't compare to the book, it's just a bad movie. It also doesn't do justice to the book as a whole, but it does absolutely nail some aspects of it. For example, Kidman as Mrs. Coulter and Sam Elliott as Lee Scoresby are great, and Dakota Blue Richards is amazing as Lyra.

The trilogy is an absolute must read for any fantasy lover, so get on that! -
Yeah I read this series years ago and it is the shit. Then I got sick of waiting for the next book. Kinda forget a lot about it now. Did he ever finish it?

My second favorite book behind Catch-22:
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
It is a pretty hefty book, albeit brilliant, but a classmate recommended/let me borrow it and I finished it in a few days. It is a complete mind fuck of a book. The author creates a story within a story within a story and the way he set up the pages was also very unique but takes some time to get used to reading - lots of stream of consciousness type writing. A psychological thriller that really continues to challenge you even after reading it, it has created its own "cult" culture much like the movie Donnie Darko did.

Here's a short review I stumbled upon:

and Amazon.com ratings/reviews:

are all books that will go to the grave with me.
Anything by David Mitchell.
And if you want to read a Dan Brown book by someone who actually has literary talent, you might try

However, given the attention span of most pocketfivers, I'd like to recommend a book that takes only slightly longer to read than a coloring book or a Where's Waldo book. If you don't love this, something is wrong...

this, a confederacy of dunces, and cat's cradle

Name is Brandon Sanderson. I've never read anything by him but my buddy, whos also a Jordan fan, picked up some stuff by him and seems the think the series won't suffer that much. High fantasy fans are missing out if they don't pick up George RR Martin, though. Awesome politically driven stuff.

the chronicles of thomas covenant
thnk me later -
Any one read LOTR trilogy? Ive seen movies a million times and love them, but is it "worth it" to read these beast books? (are they much better than movie)
-
Are they much better than the movie? Books are better period in my opinion. Those who don't enjoy reading can find it a daunting task but I would say go for it. They are exceptional books.
