Does the free shit work just as well as the paid for protection?
Is it more of a hassle?
Just curious if I am being stupid for buying it every year. -
Better. When you pay for antivirus you're paying a company to infect your PC occasionally to ensure that you cut them a check to renew your software license every year.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a fantastic AV software. IMO one of the best out there. -
Go to Planned Parenthood and grab a handful of rubbers. They have tons of free ones. If you see any chicks there, you already know they put out. If you strike up a nice conversation, you might be protecting yourself from viruses in no time.

I use the free version of both malwarebytes and super anti spyware and the combo seems to work pretty well. Get CC cleaner also to clean up your registry (among other things).
