  1. I am pretty close (i think) to getting this wine job that I really really want, and it sounded like I had the job locked up week and a half ago. I took a trip back to Michigan for the last 7 days, and right before i left the manager sent me an email that the trip fell at a bad time and cant hire me at the moment but to contact him as soon as I get back. Well I get up today and he called me, which has to be a good sign. However, instead of just hiring me, he is asking for references now. Not sure why he didnt ask for them at the interview or in our numerous email/phone conversations but whatever, he mentioned something about hiring some more new people so now Im probly competing against these people. I was really hoping I could just get this job without all the formal hiring stuff to gain some recent useable work experience.

Thing is I have no real recent work experience, to list as a references at least, and now I am not sure what to do. The two jobs I listed were from 7+yrs ago, before i went to college, so those are probly useless. Cant really just makeup references so any idea on what to do here? How many references is a manager looking for and do they have to be from work experience? What is the etiquette for listing a person as your reference as well?

I do have my sommelier instructor as one good reference tho, so theres always that.
  2. anyone you worked for (yeah, saw the 7 years)
any teachers? that would be good

maybe a parent's friend or something. someone who knows you and will vouch. and preferably is successful. "He drives me to get my county check and then to AA" prolly won't help lol.

    I've even put friends/roommates

    glglgl
  3. i would probably use college professors and anything else along those lines. Obv not for your BS class, but your like 3 and 400 level classes that you did well in and maybe knew the teacher on a personal level

ps. i havnt had a job or applied in 4 or 5 years, just probably what i would do in your shoes

Yes, you can use "character" references which are just your friends or parents friends. Do you have any buddies that are Drs or lawyers?
  5. I'd list 2-3 people.

As for etiquette, you always need to ask the reference permission, and inform them that they will be receiving a call. If you get the job, be sure to thank your reference.

As for who...if they hired you based on work experience, I'd try to locate your bosses from the two previous jobs. Besides that, possibly one of your college teachers? Or maybe a colleague in a similar field?

  6. Most of buddies are in the finance accounting fields, wouldnt trust any of my friends as a doctor lol

Maybe the professor route might work. Trying to figure out who I would use right now, been awhile since I was a state. Probly just shoot em an email giving them a heads up they may be contacted

  13. get a good character reference..
write your own reference also...who knows you and ur abilities better then you.
  14. Good news is if he's asking for references then it's your job to lose.

Teachers are a great reference if you haven't worked for 7 years. Wine guy you know would work. Any family friend who's got a power job with a good title whom can hype you up never hurts either.

I always thought references were a joke. Who the hell is going to put down someone who isn't going to hype you up? I guess if you're references are all drinking buddies you got troubles but even my old drinking buddies can lie with the best of them.

    Good luck!
