  1. I am wondering about the viability of female reporters in a region that has oppressive rules / feelings / laws against women.

I feel awful for her. Sigh.
  2. I wonder if it was the awesome freedom-loving egyptians or the p.o.s. oppresive egyptians

    hope she's ok
  3. Fucking savages. Jester brings up a good point though, the risks posed to females in certain areas are enough that maybe they just can't have female reporters there.
  4. that's fucked up shit. i hope she recovers and didn't suffer any long term physical injuries/stds. i always assumed that they had bodyguards or big ass camera men.
  5. I wonder if she was in fact raped. Sexual assault and rape aren't necessarily equivalent in all circumstances. Not that being attacked and even groped would be pleasant, but not nearly as damaging as rape would be.

How the fuck did her security detail "get separated"? Wasn't she, as the chief correspondent, the one person they should have been watching?
  6. also, I think it's pretty innapropriate to print that she was sexually assualted (whatever the extent) unless she allowed it.
  7. it is def fucked up, but those egyptians are nuts over there, she shoulda stayed close to the security.
  8. Why was she out of the kitchen?
  9. I thought the same thing Jeff, seems weird to let that out publicly so quickly. When they said "prolonged sexual assault" or whatever it was, I tend to think it was likely rape. Just horrible.
  10. They reported it because other people knew about it and it would have leaked. They wanted to control the message so they struck first. Its a media driven world now, can't sit on stories if you want to control the message.
  11. Im pretty sure I watched a video of hers from Egypt last week. It got pretty tense and some people were very aggressive towards her and her crew after some guy made up some BS about what the crew was doing.
  12. If she looked kind of like Mr. Bean, that was Christiane Amanpor. I saw that same video.

    This is Lara Logan.

  13. lol no, it was a blonde chick. Ill try to find it.
  14. Wondering when the cell phone video footage of the gangrape will show up on the internet...the news report said a mob of 200 egyptians overwhelmed her security

Absolutely this^. And lol @ anyone thinking her camera crew/security would be able to stop a mob of 200 guys.
  16. didn't say all 200 guys were assaulting her...most likely a group of 6-10 inside of that mob were actually assaulting her with others watching. Im sure her security detail could have done quite a bit to have it broken up.

I think I know which one you're talking about. I believe that one, also a blonde, was a CNN reporter. CNN was showing her and their other female reporter there, Anderson Cooper, going through the crowd getting jostled.

I don't think this is a very attractive solution. I don't think taking the rights away from females in our country is the best way to deal with the oppressive beliefs of some of the people in these countries. If this type of approach had been taken in the civil rights movement we wouldn't made near a much progress.

  19. ^^ It isn't taking their rights away.. it is just protecting them against another nation (can we say almost 3rd world) that doesn't have the same beliefs or laws we do. Adapt to the situation and if you can't tell the middle east hasn't historically treated women with respect.

Not taking anything against women in our country but is playing the civil rights card really worth an incident like this?
  20. I agree it isn't an ideal solution, I just don't know if there's a way to protect them adequately. You can't realistically have a security team of 50 to protect one reporter, and if part of the job is being placed in the middle of a large group of people that you can't be sure are going to not sexually assault the reporter, what are the options?

It is taking their rights away if she volunteered to be there, and wants to be there. It would not be taking her rights away to say that news organizations can't force female reporters to go to these regions because of issues with safety.

And Yes, having equal civil rights is worth an incident like this. Nobody wants this type of shit to happen, it is awful and disgusting. But taking away the rights of a group of people that are not doing anything wrong or infringing on anyone elses personal freedoms is not correct.

I see your point, but seems ignorant to put a female in a world that has no regard (so many more relevant words to use there) for women. Also, didn't say one bit that civil rights wasn't worth it.. I just thinking throwing that excuse is narrow thinking.

If there was a village in the Amazon of 1k people that hadn't been discovered and their women ruled and had tendencies to be very aggressive to outsiders, especially males, then I think my best female reporter would be going. Not any of my males.
  24. As a female, I actually agree with those who said that sending female reporters into situations like this is probably not wise. I don't think the feminist movement has done women any favors at all. I'd rather be treated like a lady and protected than treated just like a man. Men and women are different. One isn't better than the other, just not the same physically and emotionally. And that's ok.

I feel really bad for her. How horrible. I don't understand why people have to act like animals.
  25. is she the broad that did the Billy Walters story on 60 mins?

lol, how ignorant can someone be?

but we agree that no woman should be there reporting, that was just really bad/not thinking imo.
  27. completely retarded to even put female reporters into situations like that in the first place. news flash...the muslim world does not believe in equality of the sexes or any of that stuff and they act accordingly.

savages is a pretty gentle term to describe these people.
