  1. Anyone seen this movie? Had never heard of it til tonight...pretty good imo.

  2. I watched it last night. They did a great job with the imagery. I enjoied it, surely was not the worst movie I had ever seen. The end was ruined for me by some jac ass giving me a spoiler right before I watched it.
  3. I honestly only watched it cause of Viggo Mortensen (no homo). My second fav actor after Edward Norton.

  4. i mean you kinda gotta say no homo considering viggo is like the modern day kevin bacon of showing his dick on camera

  5. My thoughts:

    The Road (2009)
    Director - John Hillcoat
    111 Min; R
    Man - Viggo Mortensen
    Boy - Kodi Smit-McPhee
    Woman - Charlize Theron

Novelist Cormac McCarthy came into the mainstream when the film adaptation of his work No Country For Old Men won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2007, and now we are given another adaptation, this time of his work The Road, a story that centers on the relationship of a man and his boy in a post-apocalyptic world as they follow “the road” towards the ocean and look to avoid other survivors with ulterior motives, not the least of which is a cannibalistic appetite.

Director John Hillcoat was up against a lot when making this film, with perhaps the most daunting task being that of the portrayal of a world that is steeped in misery and covered in a sad and heavy dust. It would be nearly impossible for a film to capture the tone of the novel, and though it does a very good job, it never really moves past a film about a man and his boy trying to survive, unlike the novel which seemingly transcends this simple story and leaves a lasting impression you cannot forget.

Viggo Mortensen as the Man and Kodi Smit-McPhee as the Boy are both very good and the film is overall one I would recommend, though I do strongly suggest you read the novel first and then take a look at the film, since I am sure you will be much more pleased having the memories of the book in your head as you peruse this desolate world on screen.

  6. Count me in for being gay for Viggo. I still think A History of Violence is vastly underrated.

oh man so this...it takes a little while to get it going, but when it does its some awesome awesome scenes

the road- i "dragged" my girl to see it and she was pissed, and she ended up crying for about 75% of the movie and said thank u for bringing me to that, and in the end she really liked it :-D

  9. me and my girl watched it last night and i thought it looked amazing...it really made you 'feel' the environment. great music too.

but i felt like the story was kinda lacking...i mean, they are on this epic quest, and for what? i just didnt like the way it ended really. and also woulda been cool to know what the fuck happened to the earth...the sun exploding is my guess.

and history of violence is a great movie...ed harris is bad ass in that movie too. def one of the most underrated movies in recent memory.

Sun Exploding is not a very good theory, would be a little more cold than that.

Im guessing solar flare knocked out a bunch of power, or nuclear war or something of that sort. Maybe even Asteroid.
  11. A few years ago I was feeling pretty depressed/going through some stuff when somebody gave me The Road as a must read.

I picked it up and read through it and then gave it back to them pissed off and asked, "What the hell were you thinking suggesting that book to me!?!"
  12. movie is about a 64/100

    book is about a 93/100

    *these rankings are exact
  13. i saw it in theaters...

i got told that it was going to be really gory and not so much. not bad tho.
  14. nope
  15. Will check this out. Love those kind of movies.
  16. 3 out of 5 stars for me. While it is a pretty decent movie, it comes nowhere near No Country for Old Men in terms of capturing in film the essence of McCarthy's novel.

Speaking of Cormac McCarthy, I have very high hopes for upcoming adaptations of both Cities of the Plain and Blood Meridian. The former is being directed by Andrew Dominik (Chopper, Assassination of Jesse James) while Todd Field (In the Bedroom, Little Children) is set to direct the latter.

Viggo Mortensen is great, though. He is obviously awesome in the two Cronenberg movies, LOTR Trilogy, Appaloosa and the Road, but I really enjoy some of the supporting roles he did in the 90s. Carlito's Way, Albino Alligator, Crimson Tide, A Perfect Murder, The Passion of Darkly Noon; the guy steals every scene he is in.
  17. great movie, great book, highly recommended
  18. that movie was too depressive/sad/etc for me.

  19. Viggo is on my wife's list so that pretty much makes me very gay for Viggo.

also a great actor and an even better human being.

It's nice to have an occasional reminder of how fucking stupid some people in OT are.

Maybe the sun is about to explode. It's like a transition period to the explosion.

You aren't, I know two other people that didn't. I know like 8 that loved it though. I finished it in a day and I am super slow reader. I just couldn't put it down.

FWIW, whoever it was that said it was like the movie lacked plot probably didn't get it.
  27. I hope that they do justice to Blood Meridian. That is a great book. Any idea who is playing The Judge?
  28. I don't think the movie has been cast yet. Tom Noonan would be a brilliant choice as the Judge, but it will probably be a guy with more name recognition.Todd Field has worked with Tom Wilkinson before; he would be a good pick as well.

underrated?? it's actually very highly rated.. 94% cream of the crop on rotten tomatoes, 2 oscar noms..
  30. I can't wait to see the movie. I preferred the book to No Country, but based on how well the Coen brothers did with the film adaptation, and some of the comments itt, I don't think it is going to translate as well to the screen. I'm such a huge fan of post apocalypse movies, but keep waiting for a truly great one. I'm hoping this is it.
