  1. I was just curious as to what y'all think is harder...running inside on a treadmill or outside?

I have a 5k coming up and I've been training solely on a treadmill. I'm totally prepared (I think) but I'm a little nervous because I haven't run outside...at all. The one time I did it was on hills and 85 degrees out so I only ran like a mile.

And yeah yeah I know half of OT probably doesn't run, but any opinion is better than none!
  2. harder? lol its outside by a mile (cwidt??)

i cant stand running inside...soooooooooo boring
  3. Treadmill running isnt even real running. There about as different as two things called by the same name "running" could be

    edit: outside running harder obv

  4. they are two completely different things from my pov, outside you deal with the elements (wind, sun, air temp, etc...), random changes in elevation, changing surfaces, can vary your speed and stride length whenever you want. on a treadmill, i know you can change speed and incline, but your kind of like a robot on that thing
  5. outside by far
  6. I've always thought running on a treadmill was harder . Maybe it's mental because you aren't going anywhere.
I can run a mile on a track way faster than on a treadmill.
It's also harder for me to want to stay on a treadmill , most boring shit in the world

  8. Without a doubt, running inside is easier-for me anyway. Wind, uneven terrain (when not on a track), bad weather, and temp being too hot or too cold make it more difficult for me .

Sigh, this isn't boding well for me! The 5k is on an even terrain, but I have a feeling it's gonna be really, really hot. At least I'll have the beach to distract me

haha, i kept meaning to do that but today was my last run until the race.

i get home from work..do other stuff...and then by the time i go to the gym it's starting to get dark out/already dark so i'm stuck inside.

Start training at the track at a local HS. Once you get used to it, you will be fine. If you only train on a treadmill then the day of the 5k, you're going to struggle a bit.
  13. I personally find the treadmill harder than the outside, but just in the mental aspect. I can't stand running to begin with, but when I'm running and staring at the same thing for however long I run I mentally just can't do it. Outside I can at least see people, cars, animals, wildlife, etc. and it keeps my mind away from how much I hate running in the first place.

  14. I've always been a treadmill runner. As for your 5k, you'll be fine. It's not like you're training to win it, right? If you can complete 3.1 miles on a treadmill, you will have no problem doing it outside. Plus, the extra adrenaline of running in a 5k against other people will propel you to finish faster than normal.

I prefer treadmills because I can mentally shut out the distance/time. When you're outside or on a track, you're always aware of how far you've gone, and how much farther you need to go. When you start feeling tired, you don't want to see that you're only halfway through your run. That's too discouraging. On a treadmill you can block it out and prevent yourself from looking at the display panel. Keep your mind distracted and focus on the music, and the next thing you know, you've run two minutes longer than you had planned.

I know running indoors is easier, but the convenience far outweighs the one disadvantage. I do mix it up though in the summer. About once a week I'll run outside.
