My buddy has been trying to get me to take up golf with him. I have literally never played a round. Awesome at mini-golf and I've been to a driving range a handful of times but not in a while.
Anyway, somehow we came onto this debate:
Would someone like me be able to beat a top PGA golfer if I played with a decent caddy as an advisor and the PGA pro could only use a wedge for every shot?
If not, what about a putter?
I would like to point out that I have as little knowledge of the sport as one could have. I am an above average athlete in pretty good shape that plays most sports but golf has never really interested me. -
No .. if he had a wedge he'd kick your ass.
-
every pga golfer on the planet would win with a putter in this scenario
-
Not a chance in hell. I was a division 3 player and played to about a 2 (not even in the same realm as a PGA pro) and had a match with a new golfer. I used only a 4 iron and I gave him one stroke a hole. I won 8 out of 9 holes on the front 9. He made me switch to a wedge on the back 9 and I won all 9 holes with the wedge. The pro would beat you with a left handed wedge.
-
If you kept it within 40 strokes you did well. Keeping legit score that is.
-
you would quit before finishing the round
-
pro would destroy you. they would beat you with a putter also, but probably not as badly.
-
Is this really a question?
-
I am a mid single digit player and ill take my PW against any person who hasn't played a real round of golf before.
-
imagine with me, a world with no hypothetical situations.
-
If absurd self-confidence was a sport, OTers would wreck anyone
-
he would beat you with or without. he would beat with a wedge. he would beat you with a putter. he would beat you in the rain. he would beat you on a train.
-
I can see a scenario where OP could beat a Pro that's using a putter(course selection), but no way with a wedge.
-
No way you have a chance to win. It's not how far you can hit it with your full bag of clubs versus their wedge distance, but how much trouble you will get into versus their accuracy and short game skillz.
-
This is true. If the course had tons of water with forced carries, this might be possible. It might take the pro putting down cartpaths to keep it out of the water and they might make some pretty high scores, but you would have to figure out a way to hit it over those areas too.
-
only way u may win is if there were a couple holes where u had to carry it 220+ off the tee to get across a hazard and the pro just kept dumping them in. still he would find a way to win
-
No and No. You would not be able to do that
-
grrrrrr if you guys keep it up, i see a VERY large wager in your future.
you cant beat him! a putter has some loft! if the putter broke in half, then the head flew off into the water, he would beat your ASS with the half shaft.......wake up please. -
The best part is thinking a caddy advisor would make a difference forthis
-
You would have absolutely ZERO chance. putter only would be tough for pros but i think it is quite realistic for pros to be able to consistently make double bogeys (probably better) with only a putter, whereas you will no way be able to even manage a score like that with no experience; even with a full set and advice.

Also, Minigolf is about as closely related to Golf as Tennis is to Table Tennis. So although I don't challenge your claim to be very good at it, it essentially means absolutely NOTHING when it comes to golf. -
I used to golf w this guy that always kicked my ass (not saying much) so we'd have to prop bet everything. one day he played the back 9 holes with only a putter and I'd put an over/under on the strokes. I don't think he had a problem beating 8-9 strokes on any of the holes, so no, zero chance of beating a pro.
-
Jets, more than likely YOU would score better with only a wedge your first time out.
-
Hell no.
Lee Trevino in a pro am once went to a par 3 that was 140 yards with a 5 iron on accident. His group laughed and he bet them he could hit the green with every club from a 9-Driver. He won the bet.
They would blade a wedge 150-160 yards....hit it to their go to distance with that wedge and 2 putt.
