U.S. striker Davies injured in car accident

ESPN.com news services

October 13, 2009
Charlie Davies, a striker for the United States national soccer team, was injured in a one-car accident early Tuesday in suburban Washington, D.C., in which another person was killed, a U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman said.

Davies was in surgery Tuesday afternoon at Washington Hospital Center and in stable condition, U.S. Soccer said in a statement. The extent of his injuries were unknown, but U.S. Soccer spokesman Neil Buethe said they were not life-threatening.

Davies, who also plays for the French first-division club Sochaux, was expected to require more than 5 hours of surgery.

Charlie Davies has four goals in 17 games with the U.S. national team.

The U.S. national team is in Washington to play a World Cup qualifying match against Costa Rica on Wednesday. The team has already qualified for the 2010 World Cup.

"Obviously, as a team we were saddened to learn this news," national team coach Bob Bradley said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlie and his family, as well as the people in the car and the families of the others involved. As a team, we are relying on each other in a moment that has for sure hit us all hard."

The accident occured at about 3:15 a.m. ET Tuesday in the southbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Virginia. The U.S. Park Police identified the person who died as Ashley J. Roberta, 22, of Phoenix, Md.

U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Schlosser said there were three people in the car and that Roberta was not the driver. Davies was also not driving, police told the USSF, according to the Washington Post.

Davies and another passenger were taken to Washington Hospital Center, one by land and one by helicopter, Schlosser said.

"The car was pretty much split in half," Schlosser said, according to the Post.

Born in Manchester, N.H., Davies played for Boston College before turning pro in 2006. Davies has four goals in 17 international appearances and started Saturday when the U.S. won 3-2 at Honduras to clinch its sixth straight World Cup berth. He was a member of last year's American Olympic team.

The U.S. team had an optional breakfast at its hotel Tuesday, and officials were informed of the accident around 11 a.m., just as Davies' surgery was about to begin. Bradley gathered the players before lunch and informed them of the news. Davies' teammates were not made available for comment.

"Obviously, the players are saddened by the situation and, obviously, hope the surgery goes well for Charlie and that he has a quick recovery," Buethe said.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Edit: According to Sportscenter, Davies has a lacerated bladder, broken elbow, facial fractures...along w/ other injuries, and will need more surgery.

This will be a huge huge loss if he cant play this summer....the US will have no shot at anything imo if he doesnt play, he has looked damn good so far in the qualifiers and has been playing great for his French team.
2. Ugh, what a bad situation.

RIP to the woman who died, and lets hope that Davies has a fast recovery.

3. Charlie Davies is the man. Speedy recovery sir and RIP to the young woman who passed
4. Not good....

3am??? Hmm, wonder what they were out doing.

I smell a vehicular manslaughter for the driver.

5. Don't like to make assumptions but the facts mentioned, make me think he was likely intoxicated.

Im sure you'll cosign this...

GW Parkway is one of the most absurdly dangerous roads in the Mid-Atlantic (if not the whole U.S.)

Because of it is considered to be a "scenic" route and is maintained by the US Park service it has a very minimal amount of overhead lights. It runs alongside the Potomac River (city lights don't illuminate it) and is an absolute bitch to navigate if you aren't familiar with it.

Here's an excerpt from a Wash Post article about an accident on the parkway last year. (Read down to the end for surprise lulz)

"The George Washington Parkway will be closed again this morning in both directions when rescuers resume their search for a motorcyclist who apparently went off the roadway and plummeted down the steep embankment toward the Potomac River.

The southbound lanes were reopened for several hours overnight, but northbound lanes remained closed.

Officers from the U.S. Park Police, the Arlington County police, the D.C. police and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority police searched last night for nearly six hours without locating the missing biker.

The search was called off shortly before midnight and was scheduled to resume at sunrise, or about 6 a.m., officials said.

Officials said the parkway again will be closed northbound at the Spout Run Parkway and southbound at Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road). Last night's closing of the main traffic artery caused major backups as travelers returned from the long Memorial Day weekend. The southbound lanes were reopened about 12:15 a.m. today.

The search began yesterday evening after Arlington police got a call about 6 p.m. that a motorcyclist, riding alongside another biker, had driven off the cliff and vanished from sight, authorities said. The motorcyclist left the roadway about a mile north of the Spout Run exit, officials said.

Police said they did not know where the biker was from or why the motorcycle swerved off the roadway.

The other motorcyclist stayed on the scene during the search but declined to speak with reporters, said Carol Saulnier, a spokeswoman for the Arlington fire department.

After learning about the accident, police closed the northbound parkway to begin their search. But about 6:45 p.m., a Mercedes SUV traveling southbound on the parkway rolled over and sent a loose tire into the rescue effort.

"That's a huge safety issue for us. It was literally about 25 feet from where the rescue was," Saulnier said.

The driver was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The second accident prompted police to shut down the parkway in both directions."
9. No doubt GW pkwy is crazy dangerous.
It's funny, I took the pkwy northbound last night after the caps game and was thinking how many people prob die here cuz of the lack of light and the proximity to the river. The hill down to the river from Spout Run area is dark as shit at night and there's jagged rocks on the median but it's such a beautiful view of the city in the daytime.

They can probably deduce from the position, severity, and type of injuries whether or not he was driving, like in The Sopranos, to quote another HBO show
17. The GW Parkway is mostly dangerous because it is full of fucking idiot northern va/dc/md drivers.

Also, I think it's pretty obvious the driver was doing way over the speed limit, which is only 45 mph where this occurred.

espn just said they hadn't determined who was driving which contradicts the initial report which pretty much proves your point
22. the first thing i think of when i hear ruptured bladder (or lacerated as described) and a 3am car crash is that someones bladder was full of urine due to excessive drinking and upon blunt impact asploded

...or he could just be a fragile soccer player

glglgl with the recovery
23. wow, i never in the world would have thought of something like that until reading it

what was your old name?

Meh. You still have to admit the parkway is ridiculously dark in some spots even for a competent, sober driver. Even on a clear night it's not the most drive-friendly road. Add in anything that reduces visibility (fog, rain, cloudiness etc) and you are one sudden bend away from a big drop and a dip in the potomac.
25. shame, but we can stilll win without him
