I have been in retail management for over 20 years and i have never had to discuss this problem before.
Edited By: crfgreengo Aug 24th, 2011 at 01:40 AM
i have an employee that has a body odor problem. I dont think its a showering issue but i can't be sure.
A few co-workers have brought it to my attention none of them were very happy to bring the issue to me.
I have smelled him a few times before but thought maybe it was an isolated incident. I have had one employee say a couple of regular customers have made comments.
The employee normaly works 2-3 shifts by himself and 2-3 with a co worker. The employee is very trustworty and has worked for me over a year and has never called in sick. The employees work is avarage.Today an employee said i can't work with him because of his body odor. This is really the 1st offical complaint i have gotten and i need to
take some action.
What would you do? -
tell him the truth - that his body odor is bothering fellow employees and even customers, and to rectify the problem. seems simple to me.

EDIT: but I'm very confrontational by nature and have no trouble saying what's on my mind, even if it might hurt someone -
leave a note on his windshield
-
For legal purposes I'd start with a letter pertaining to personal hygine. Is this a small place is there a company policy?? In retail its expected you are in a manner that presents yourself well for customers
-
Give him a raise. He obv can't afford soap.
-
verify if he's been going a2m, and if so, tell him to rinse afterward. Just tell the fat bastard to shower.
-
i would like to talk with him rather then go the hr route. Yes there is compny policy and i proably need to read that first.
-
Tell him that some people have noticed, and that it coudn't hurt to use some deodorant or body wash. I don't see why this needed it's own thread. There isn't really any other solution to this problem. Just be nice about it and don't make him feel like a piece of shit, even though he might smell like one.
-
imagine what direct contact with his taint would smell like
-
some people have a medical condition and the cause is not due to poor hygiene - there was a high school math teacher that had the same problem (thank god i was never in his class)... the best route may be through HR.

this, it doesnt have to be perceived as confrontational. tell the dude what you posted, hes trustworthy, he shows up on time, doesn't scam time off, but he has a smell issue he needs to take care of.
Reason: if legal issues are involved, eff all, why cant people just tell people to use soap whatever the fuckdfklghldf -

As mentioned above, read the company policy. Dealing with someone who has body odor is a bitch. My junior year in HS I had to drop a class because when seats were assigned, I was sat next to a dude that had the absolute worst smell you can imagine. And go figure, the class was right after his gym class. That shit literally gave me a headache. The class was full so I had no other option but to drop it.

You're lucky it's a guy. I had to have this convo with a female employee. She smelled so bad in the summer that we would literally gag if we came anywhere near her. I and another manager spoke to her and she ran out crying. The thought of how bad she smelled makes me nauseous to this day. She was severely overweight and it was definitely the cause of her BO. tread carefully, maybe contact HR for tips on how to handle it. They should be able to help you.

PM War on how his conversations have gone in the past?

nope, white.

Start a "Consecutive Days of Showering (with soap) in a Row and then using Deodorant Before you go to Work" contest. If he loses, you and the rest of your crew can make fun of him every day until he's so humiliated that he quits. If he doesn't lose, the contest should last pretty much forever since most people have enough self respect to bathe before work. It's what we call a "win-win".
-
Tell him to wash his ass. If he doesn't comply then get alll your employees to start rippin like pippen everytime they walk past him

That most stoners are non confrontational sfobv -
depends. tell him they aren't an acceptable alternative
-
not read responses but i had exactly the same thing a while back.
customer complained. and i found it it was a well known thing with the staff that this other dude stinks. talked to my boss and obv i got made to have "the chat" with him.
it was awkward to be honest but nothin you can do.
i just called him in, said look this is kinda a difficult issue, but ive had some complaints that your personal hygiene isn;t up to scratch. if theres any problem you wanna talk about then now is the time. othrwise i expect an immediate improvement.
not sure if it worked cos im on holiday now. but i doubt it. i dunno whether these stinky fuckers just dont care, or whether they cant smell it. either way i dont expect any change from one chat to be honest.
with your caase i think its best to keep it a private chat first. you never kno maybe dudes had his water cut off or some shit. or sleepin in the car cos his missus booted him out.
you never know maybe there is some way you can help sort it without goin through idsciplinary action or whatever.
