Before I start, I am a non smoker

It depends 100% on the user. For every college kid or adult who smokes on the weekends or after work to relax there is someone else who gets high instead of going to work, or smokes around their kids.

For these reasons alone I don't think it should be legal. If it were 100% people smoking during poker or on a saturday afternoon with nothing else to do then I would be OK with it.

I have the same feelings towards alcohol.

I used to smoke pot before I joined Air Force. I smoked about as much as I drink now. Since I cant smoke it I do drink more. I do not see anything wrong with it. I know alot of pot smokers who are productive members of society. It is nowhere near comparison of crack I have heard and read numerous stories of crackheads prostituting and robbing/killing people just so they can get a five dollar rock. I have never heard of any one killing someone for a 5 or 10 dollar blunt. Smoke and smoke on is what I say!

Davols- how about putting the responsibility on the person...I'm not advocating smoking and driving or smoking around underage people...those who do that should be punished and punished stiffly. There are 1000s of people who smoke cigarrettes, in cars/ w the windows up and their kids in the car. This is perfectly legal. It is also a fact that tobacco smoke is more dangerous than mari smoke... They may be nuts in Singapore but no one spits in public. If we had stiff penalties for breaking REASONABLE laws people would break them less often...I bet none of you would drink and drive if getting caught once meant you lost your license forever....

*puff puff* i have smoked chronic for the last 8 years of my life on a pretty much daily basis. weed is great for recreational use, but i have definately seen in negatively effect friends and family, mainly when they smoke every hour of their waking day, and are too zonked out to want to do anything.

It's a gateway drug in the sense that like you said, people just dont start out w heroin, etc...but that's soooo dependent on the person it's ridiculous.

I know kids who started smoking weed when they were 12 and were onto oxy and heroin by 16. A few of them who i graduated with and hung w sometimes are dead now, and I'm 24.

That said, I've been smoking since i was 17 and I've never had any interest in coke, crack, heroin etc. I'd never touch that stuff, I'm not stupid.

I guess my point is that the kids who wanna do the hardcore shit are gonna do it either way, regardless. If they didn't start out smoking weed, mb they'd start out snorting xanax instead or something.

im going to go out on a limb and say that if i didnt smoke weed every day since i was 16 (almost 14 yrs now) id prob be a more productive, happier person.

but i love me some good weed

I am with Mikey...I could use the same argument of "weed is a gateway drug" by saying "tobacco is a gateway drug" I wonder how many people who "started smoking weed then moved to heroin" also smoked ciggs...??? The point is that the stuff exists and people do it anyway. Prohibiting it only prohibits the responsible taxation and usage of it while encouraging a black market to develop.

Yeah, for the first time probably ever, i totally agree w/ Savvy.

Also, don, I'm pretty positive that every single one of the kids i knew who got really hooked on heroin and the rest of the hardcore shit were cigarette smokers.

To relay a sad story, my buddy Chang who i grew up with and who was/is probably the funniest most comically gifted human being i've ever encountered fell in with the "wrong crowd" when we were 16 or so. He made some real d-bag friends even though he was from a rich well to do asian american family, and eventually got super heavy into heroin.

Last summer he fell into a coma and was actually clinically dead for a short period of time. Thankfully he was revived and eventually awoke from the coma, but now he has limited mobility on his entire right side. He walks with a serious limp and his right arm is completely useless. It's a real sick shame, he was a great kid w a lot of potential.

I was an everyday smoker from the time i was 17 until i was 25. By that time I had a 2 year old son, was married, and had a family and career to think about so i pretty much quit except for the occasional bowl on the golf course, or at a concert, etc.

Now that im 38 (closing in on 40 rly?? fuck, fuck!!) I still smoke on occasion, and appreciate it more. IMHO there is really no better relaxation therapy other than sex.
It's relatively safe, does not overly impair your decision making abilities, and no hangover that kills your next day.

I would never do it anywhere near my son. In fact him and I have had many talks about drugs, their affects, and the possibility of addiction/jail time etc. I was honest with him in every way about them. I didn't villify weed as a killer because it's not. I did however, explain that herbs can lead to other drugs and since he's such a good athlete and so smart, that any mind-altering substance was def -EV for him.
