I'm looking into buying my first board, I've finally rode enough times where I think its worth buying one...I have a couple questions for the boarders in OT.
Edited By: $ayChee$e Jan 25th, 2011 at 04:50 AM
I wear a 12/ 12.5 boot do I need to get a wide board or bigger bindings or anything? And I'm about 6'1/6'2 is a 160 the correct length for me (I weigh 180)? I appreciate any serious recommendations on a good first board for this noob.) I just want a board that would be a good all around board that could be used in powder or park...
Reason: more info -
You came to the right place!

I don't know about the big feet but I don't think you need a wide board.

The size of the board depends more on your weight than height. w/o knowing what kind of riding you plan to do can't say how long of a board. It's like asking a poker question w/o giving stack sizes. If you want to ride powder or big mountain you want a longer board. For park you want a smaller board... -
Try google or here's an idea...maybe try a shop that sells this shit.
-
I'm basically in the same boat as you. looking for my first board i'm 6'2 185 w/ a size 12 boot. Fyi i've been told a wide board is probably best around 160. Some good sites that i've looked at so far are www.the-house.com and dogfunk.com

Sorry OP, I see that you don't realize how shitty your thread is and how good my advice is. Do you need me sugar coat it for you princess???
-
This is what I was thinking, I'm pretty sure I've had to get wide boards
-
158-162 cm wide board. Have fun. Try not to break any bones.
-
160+ wide with large bindings.
-
honestly been snowboarding since I was about 10 and I would not worry about the length at all just as long as youre not getting anything shorter than 156 cm.(im 5'9" riding 156cm and I get irritated about it being a lil too long) you'll be able to throw shorter boards around a bit more, but I'd say 6'2" I'd go with 160cm, just so your stance is not too close together

just look for "freestyle" anything freestyle burton freestyle boards are generally wider.. for you I would imagine youre getting stuff dialed down like carving and the like so I would recommend a pretty wide board for you just because it's easier to handle when starting out. I'm not too certain if the size of your boots having any problems with the width of your board but if you follow my advice getting a wider deck you should be fine.
but I really have no clue about having to get bindings I've always gotten boot+ binding package deals so I really cant help you with that -
STFU dick.. you can google any question that has ever been asked on this forum. People look for personal experiences when asking questions.. especially on product reviews. Can it and let the guy figure some shit out.

if you wear a size 12 then you need a wide board. whoever told you that you dont is completely wrong. if you get a non wide board, your boots will hang off the side and catch constantly.

i would go for a board between 158-163 depending on what you plan on doing. go shorter if you want to ride in the terrain parks and longer if you plan on just bombing down runs/carving. the longer the board is, the faster it will be (usually).
as far as brands, i would look at lib tech, never summer, rome, maybe burton but they are really overpriced. I started riding this season and bought a lib tech skunk ape 161w (im 6'3, size 13, 230). it has reverse camber which makes the board easy to handle, and it has magna traction, which helps you keep an edge when you hit ice. Its a very forgiving, easy to ride board. Another good board to look at is the rome anthem. ive ridden my friends a couple of times and its a great board. When you are just starting out, i dont think the board is that important, although i would definitely get a reverse camber board just for the ease of control.
this is the board i just bought for backcountry/powder riding, cant wait for it to show up! http://neversummer.com/snow/snowboards/raptor/

also, when you get bindings and boots do yourself a favor and dont buy the cheap shit. I bought cheap bindings the first time around and the first jump i hit my front binding exploded on landing. Now i have the rome sds binding, and its great.
if you have any other questions pm me id be happy to offer my help. -
You should ski. Boarders ruin runs for the rest of us.
-
if i had a dollar for every time i see a skier just turning across the entire run with zero regard for anyone else around them id be a strip club millionaire. skiers (especially older ones) just seem to think they are the only people on the run and its perfectly acceptable to turn across the whole trail. -
50 year old + men do this. Their runs take about 2 hours each because they go from one end of the run (slowly) allllll the way to the other end of the run at like a 10 degree angle going like 10 feet further down the run each turn. So aggravating.

Also I am a 11.5 and use a wide board I am also 6'2'' and my board is either 160 or 162 (those were the two I chose between I forget which one I chose). Definitely good advice above about it depending on what kind of boarding you are looking to do. I can tell you from experience it was a hell of a lot easier to bomb off jumps and land under control with my old shorter board than with my new board but I go way faster with the new board. -
i wear bigger boots than you and dont have that probelm...bascially dont worry about that. once you learn what your doing you wont be touching the ground with your boots.

if you want a hybrid get around a 160 (like its been said) and get a board that has medium flex in it.
lots of flex = park board
not much = freeriding board -
lol learning what you're doing has nothing to do with your boots hanging over the side of your board

this thread has great info on boot sizing and board selection and the correct way to measure your board for your boot. -
i see this kind of turned into a skiier vs boarder thread. Skiiers are going WAY bigger than boarders these days. This is isnt the early 2000's anymore, if you try to make an argument against skiiers it really shows how much you dont know about the winter season. get off the blues/greens if old skiiers are going to slow for you. but you cannot even argue the fact that skiiers have re-taken the lead when it comes to park/freestyle, and backcountry. It really isnt even close.

LOOOOOOOOOL please tell me this is a level!
