  1. If you want something unique check out Rhodesian Ridgebacks I picked up a mix a few months ago from the shelter and she's awesome. Her defining feature and unique to just ridgebacks is her Mohawk down her back. What's even cooler is that since she's mixed her hair is longer than it should be so her Mohawk stands at about an inch permanently. Other than that she is a beautiful smart dog. She can be fun and energetic and play rough (humans or dogs) or she can just chill and hang out. Mine actually isn't aggressive around cats, just respectful. Also, the last cool thing is she literally never barks unless she's is frightened by something. I think she's barked 6 times since I've had her and I literally haven't heard her bark in over a month.
  2. buying a "breed" is stupid on every level I can think of except the attention you get when you are in public.

get a mixed-breed/mutt puppy from your local animal shelter and thank me later.
  3. You have listed some very different dogs. If I were you I would write down the characteristics you are looking for, and will need, given your living circumstances and then pick a dog that compatible with you and the way you live.

For instance, Irish Setters are hunters and generally do not do well with cats and other small animals and they are high energy, which doesn't fit too well with not getting exercised every day. I will guarantee you the last thing you want is a dog that does not get enough exercise.
  4. +1 to all who said get a shelter pup.

    Ditto

  6. Agreed with everybody saying shelter.

And, no offense, but that Irish Setter might be the ugliest looking dog I've ever seen. Maybe it's just the pic in the OP, but if that's what they all look like--no thanks.

I adopted a Rhodesian from my brother about a year ago. She was a bit too much for their newborn since she was just a puppy so that's why I adopted her.

She is the most awesome dog in the world!! I take her mountain biking and stuff and she keeps up with me no problem they can run for days. They are lionhounds but they were also used to track down slaves in Africa.

I give her 5 star food (Blue Wilderness) because most regular store bought foods are absolute crap. I have to pay about twice what I normally would but it's worth it for her health.

Thumbs up for Thai and Rhodesian Ridgebacks they rule!!
  8. My brother has 2 rhodesian ridgebacks, they're awesome but I want something different. It's not just for the novelty factor or to get compliments when I walk it down the street, I just want a kinda unique pup

Not getting a shelter dog tho, I've adopted like 6 animals in the past but I doubt I'll find anything like what I posted in op there

  10. You came to the wrong place to talk about purebreds, the shelter police jumped down my throat for buying a purebred English bulldog... Eff it, get what you want... My last 2 were shelter dogs, I wanted an English bulldog... So I got one, and I'm still super happy with my purchase... He asked opinions about purebreds, not to be lectured by a bunch of people on their high horses

Whether you buy a pure breed or rescue a dog from the shelter, you are doing your part in keeping one more dog out of the shelter or being with abusive owners.

+1, you don't have any obligation to get pets from a shelter. Obviously its nice to adopt strays or whatever is found at the shelter but I wouldn't feel bad if I could afford a purebred and that's what I wanted.

one of these actions has a much larger impact on the situation than the other.

I could argue buying a dog makes the problem worse.

    I am being nice.
  19. omfg shelter police stfu. The guy said he's already gotten 6 animals from the shelter, he's already done wayyyy more than his part. Now he wants a purebreed, is that really so terrible?
  20. I would never get a dog from a shelter. If they were that good of a dog they wouldn't be there to begin with. Let the guy get what ever the fuck dog he wants.
  21. golden doodle, or great dane

Yea that gets old and I am a shelter guy myself. My only point is that he asked our opinion on the 4 purebreds in the OP and the consensus opinion is that they are all ugly as fuck.

that collie and bmd are ugly in your opinion? cause I dont think that was the consensus...that irish setter and schnauzer are hideous tho for sure!! lol

schnauzer is prob the worst looking dog of any imo...aside from grown bulldogs, bulldog pups are cute as hell but they grow up to be one ugly ass dog.
  24. Are you really talking about looks of dogs and you have those ugly mutts mattg lol

  26. had a burmese, great dog. very well mannered, but also plenty of energy.
  27. Just because they are in a shelter doesn't mean there is something wrong with them. Sometimes people have to give them up when they move, or in the case of my dog, she was a stray after the forest fires here. There's plenty of puppies in shelters that are born to strays and I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with them.

The reason people should consider adopting is there is literally no reason to force dogs to breed when there's a huge stray/shelter population out there being euthanized. Certainly if the shelter/stray populations were under control then by all means breed dogs.

I actually was gonna get a Thai Ridgeback if I didn't adopt the Rhodesian. For me it's not about the novelty factor or showing it off. She is just one of the coolest, smartest dogs that I've ever known.

Ridgebacks are special dogs IMO. They are crazy athletic and they are a very unique breed with unique personality quirks especially Thai Ridgebacks. They don't behave like normal dogs.

There are only 3 dogs in the world that have the distinctive backwards ridge. The Phu Quoc is damn near extinct it's a Thai water dog with webbed feet. They are ancient breeds especially the Thai.

As family dogs growing up we owned everything from Rottweilers to Bulldogs to Schnauzers to Golden Retrievers. These days my mom owns a Chihuaha and I love the lil fucker to death he's super cool. His name is Poppy and he's pure white like a lil Polar Bear.
