  1. I wonder if this is normal. I was so fired up for the Bruin's game and after the disgusting showing, I just felt sick. When my teams do win, I only feel relief but no real happiness unless my team wins it all. Even during the Celtic/Heat series, I was so fucking worked up over the terrible play it was almost relief when they got eliminated. Embarrassing enough I have even shed tears over sports, Buckner, Boone, Manning ruining a perfect season are a few I can remember tearing my soul to shreds. So I am just curious as to the question I posted in the title. Seemed like a good night as any to get ridiculed being I am already in a fucked mood. Thoughts?
  2. When the hawks won it all, I was sooo happy. This year when they made it to game 7 I was soooo happy as well. I get pissed when my teams suck but when they finally do well it makes it all worth it.

I am a cubs fan so I will forever be disappointed in that area of my life.
  3. It's definitely unhealthy, but I'm sure most hardcore sports fans are like this, myself included. I would definitely recommend emotionally distancing yourself from your teams though, since it really isn't worth allowing something you have absolutely no control over to consistently have a profound negative effect on your emotions.
  4. How old are you TRMGM? Not trying to be a dick, just curious if you're really old enough to have shed a tear over Buckner?

  5. Mickey Mantle doesn't pay your rent.

It's nice to see the home teams winning especially when playoff time rolls around but in the grand scheme of things I could really give a shit less unless I had a big bet on them.
  6. I was 16 when Buckner made me cry. I have loved watching the games for as long as I can remember. I was watching the game with my grandmother and seeing the disappointment in her eyes killed me. She never got to see them win the WS and she never missed a game.

I have tried to distance myself but dammit I can't! I mean I almost envy the half assed "normal" people who just watch and enjoy when their teams are winning. When their teams lose they don't give a fuck.

Big Earn, just think when the Cubs do win it all, you are going to be ecstatic. Did Steve Bartman cause a little tear? Just a little one?

  9. Let's see.....

Raiders have made it to one Super Bowl (and lost) since I've been able to actually follow football. All I'm used to is the disappointment.

With the A's, I remember them winning the WS in '89, but I was only 7 years old so I don't really count that. Their epic choke jobs back in the early 2000's brought me to tears, but over the last several seasons they haven't had postseason exposure so I haven't had any heartbreak to deal with.

With the Sharks, well there's more heartbreak there than any other team. I don't think they're worthy of the choke label given that they've only had a top team for 3-4 seasons (2 of which took them to the Conference Finals), but since they've had so much playoff exposure I can understand why casual fans would put that label on them. I think the Caps have choked much harder, but that's just my opinion. I can honestly tell you that the day that the Sharks bring home that Cup will probably be one of the happiest sporting moments of my life. I believe that this could be their year, and hopefully when I return from vacation they'll be in the Stanley Cup Finals and hopefully I can be at the game when they finally do win the cup. That's basically my dream.

On the flip side, their defeats in the past have broken me down to tears. I still vividly remember the 4OT loss against Dallas that would've forced a Game 7 when they started down 0-3. That one felt like a kick to the gut.

I think losing just stands out more because it happens more than the winning.
  10. the joy of winning is much more for me than the pain of losing. The feeling i had watching the Giants win last year (the only time i cried over a pro sporting event) was more intense than the lowest i have felt over sports (the Giants collapsing in the WS in 2002). The pain goes away soon after, the joy stays with you forever, i think.
  11. Cizazsto, I do respect Raider and Shark fans. When living in Cali I went to allot of A's, Sharks and Raider games and they have some awesome fans. A friend of mine had season tickets right behind the visitors dugout when the A's where off the hook in 89' I would go all the time with him and it was a blast. Dave fucking Stewart owned us and he caused me a bit of pain. Also, I think Raider fans know what mean (tuck)

That is awesome Scott, I have numerous die hard Giant fans and I was really happy for them.

Greatest comeback in World Series history in Game 6, or greatest collapse in a single game. I guess it depends which team you were rooting for.

whichever it was, it fucking sucked.

i think there are a lot of factors that go into it, though. Previous success of a team has something to do with it. I'm just as big a 49er fan also, but i've seen them win enough that I don't get as high or low when they win or lose. Sure, i'll be excited if they win the SB again, but it won't compare at all to the Giants winning.
  14. i dont deal with losing well, as has been shown

but it fucking sucks losing huge games. It breaks my person when my Spartans lose

  17. As a Seattle fan...which is one of..if not the worst sports cities in the nation for winning...i have gotton used to losing

but, when my fav teams lose big games..Univ. Wash hoops to be exact.

i cannot even read the sports section for like 2 days..i am a dick for a few hours after they lose and hate to be interupted during the games.

when they win big games i am hella happy.

i think that most fans who support historically winning teams experience much more anguish than joy overall though.

simply for the fact that many teams lose games they should not and this can be frustrating...if they win these games its no biggie cause it was expected. yes...the highs are much better but lets be honest many of us expect championships when supporting really good teams.

its pretty much vice versa for those supporting historically losing teams. when they do overachieve you are really happy and when they lose you are not as upset because you did not expect them to do so well anyway. You can reflect on the accomplishments of the season much better that way

    just my two cents

i love college hoops for this one reason...UW won the Pac 10 championship last year on one of the years most dramatic shots and then lost a heartbreaker in the tourney to UNC.

when i reflect on the season i think about that amazing win...

    i love the conference tourneys...

  18. Good points Pluv. I do expect too much without a doubt. I was so used to the Pats sucking for my whole life, I was just numb. Since 2001 I really believe like an idiot that they should win every year to the point of just being irrational.

If the Bruins can pull this off and win the Cup I will never bitch again about my teams, I pinky swear for real!

  22. I've never been able to make that comparison.
  23. being a Notre Dame homer you kind of get over the losing part fast.

    I am also a 49ers fan....
  24. my philosophy regarding my favourite team is "we won"/ "they lost".

this. Been a Cubs fan since I was 6 yo and watching them play on WGN after Bozo the Clown. 1st heartbreak was in 1984. Then 1989. 1998 I thought was brutal. But then 2003 happened. Ugh.

31 years of this crap, and yes, it's painful. But if they ever win the WS in my lifetime, the joy will be 10x the previous combined pain.
  27. depends on circumstances winning sticks in your memory forever.
losing stings initially then you realize you need get your errands done.
  28. 1. Yes....we have the same personalities.

  30. Been a Devils fan for a long time, I remember the heartbreak of 1994 despite being only 8 at the time, the joy of 1995 which was just after I turned 10 but the games that stick out to me are Game 7 v Carolina in 2009 as the most devastating loss I've ever experienced live and Devils v Penguins from March 4th of this year.

The Devils were doing nothing all season and went on a run that defied every sporting law. The joy when Kovalchuk scored in OT was just unbelievable...still having the belief and hope that the run would continue another day. That was when I realized that wins > losses. Because that win meant NOTHING but that loss meant EVERYTHING.
