  1. i started having insomnia problems after quitting smoking. i was worried about getting into the habit of taking nyquil or tylenol pm every night. i switched to taking melatonin and it works great.
  2. /eagerly awaits marinersheeps response

  3. i'm guessing the side affects of staying up that long really wouldn't be from the lack of sleep but more from what you did while you're awake.

Say you smoke cigs, well if you're awake longer than another smoker you prolly smoke more in 1 day etc. So i'm not really sold on the lack of sleep that affects you, cus if you absolutely needed it your body would just pass out...

if you're staying up that long and don't want too, try working out or if you do that already workout harder. you can get tired if you want to and you can do it in healthy ways; without smoking pot or taking sleeping pills etc...

  4. i've been staying up later and later every night (morning)...but then i sleep until like 1 or 2 and waste the day away. so i think i'm just not sleeping this morning and will try to hit the sack earlier in the evening.

  5. i use to pull a lot of all nighters in uni. Even stayed up for 2 and a half days in a row one time when i had work, school and studying for exams. By the third day i was literally feeling like i was leaving my body watching myself. I slept for 20 hours plus when i finally hit the bed and pretty sure I could never do that today.

24 hours without sleep not a big deal, but past that is not good imo.
  6. I've averaged over 7 and a half hours of sleep in my lifetime. Its all about time management (Except a few exceptions aka like MUPP said surgeons). I do more school work from 10-3 after a hefty breakfast, a shower, and 7+ hours of sleep than most students do in an entire day. Your ability to focus diminishes during the day...Caffeine helps getting that focus back but as you drink more of it the focus spans get shorter...so I use up the time of the day I have the most focus (Early morning) to do the most important thing I have for the day, then use the rest of the day to do menial tasks that don't require mental alertness (errands, small assignments, answering emails). By 8:30 my brain is exhausted so I just eat and chill after that.

In 3.5 years of being in school, I have never ever studied past 1am.

  9. 64 hours awake is my personal record. I was seriously hallucinating for the last 12 hours or so.
  10. ok, that explains the A8 call to my 3 bet with AK.

  11. How are shingles and lack of sleep related?

The two are not directly related, but a lack of sleep can weaken your immune system leaving you more susceptible to infections. A healthy immune system will normally keep the virus in check
  13. did 70 hours in first year undergrad, last 12-18 (lost conception of time) were awful. had various small spasms/twitches and couldn't function. thought it would be smart to stay awake drinking red bull, beer, smoking joints, taking over the counter caffeine pills and a couple ritalins.

  15. i have to do this at least once a week. i started trying to get up by 8 am lately and go to bed by 11-12 at night. once a week (prolly like tonight) i will mess that up and have to start over
  16. considering ur success online, im gonna assume u just bypassed or dropped out of college.. and if so... going to college makes u realize sleep is over rated... esp comes finals time. as long as ur not operating a motor vehicle or making decisions that may cost you alot of money...

    oh...

    wait...

hm anyways... sleeps still over rated. just make sure u get ur rest sometime. the human body is insane at how it can handle things.
  17. i used to run a poker room in houston, which caused me to stay up for up to 3 days at a time. My sleep cycle was so fucked. id come home at 7 or 8am, sleep until 3 and then go back to work. i did that for about 18 months. I absolutely felt like shit...just tired all the time, lethargic and unhappy. When you are sleep deprived, you also tend to make poor food decisions, which just exacerbates the situation.

i developed psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis this past year after never ever having any symptoms of it, and im pretty much convinced it happened because of the poor sleep/eating patterns i followed during this period. i mean, its a hereditary disease so i was predisposed to it prior to developing psoriasis, but im 100% positive that my lifestyle triggered it. in the year since my diagnosis, i have been eating better and losing weight and sleeping 8 hours a night and i have to say its night and day with regards to my health.
  18. I've read studies that said you don't want to sleep too much and you don't want to sleep too little. The perfect amount of sleep is 7-9 hours. Anything over 10 is bad for your health having something to do with the REM cycles, and anything less than 7 doesn't allow you to get into the deep REM cycles.

I'm not a doctor but I've had similar troubles with sleep in the past. It first started out when I was grinding nearly 6 days a week. I'd wake up, eat, grind, and 15 hours later, go to sleep. It was a really unhealthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally. You should always wind down at least an hour before bed, IE reading a book or meditating, and always have balance with other things in your life besides poker. I didn't know that this was forming a very bad habit and would make the next couple years of my life very hard on me. I would have no schedule on when I woke up and went to bed, and stressing out when it was saturday night and I couldn't sleep. I'd feel tired during the day, even when I got a good nights sleep. It got so bad that I couldn't control myself to get out of bed at noon, and sometimes would sleep til 6pm, even though I desperately wanted to get back on that normal schedule.

I definitely recommend you take a good look at how this schedule makes YOU feel, because in the end, that's the only person who it really matters to. If you feel like you're exhausted and need a change, then take the necessary steps to do that. If you feel well rested throughout the day then that's great. I would educate yourself in the subject well so you can make an informed decision about what to do.

I got reprimanded for this the other day....
  20. Once your brain understands that sleep deprivation plays more like $1/$2 you'll be perfectly okay.

    Exactly this.

My Mom has worked a 36 shift delivering babies starting Sunday night and ending Tuesday morning, every week for nearly 20 years now.

My Father's rural ER medical practices are built on getting double board certified docs (ie really good ones), to staff the low volume ERs, 24 hours at a time.

When illness and scheduling snafus occur, it is not unusual for him to work four of these in a week. Sometimes 5.

I, on the other hand, cannot do this. Because I am 40 pounds overweight, and my diet is fucking awful. Which will change in the new year. But since my body isnt optimized, going 24 hours without sleep is very hard for me.
  22. I worked the better part of a week during OIF without meaningful sleep. My shift was 7pm to 7am but they shot missiles at us during the day while we were trying to rest. Our genius unit required somone (me) to walk to the HQ after each missile attack and report our shift's accountability. It was a quarter mile walk (one-way) thru the sand in 130 degree heat. I made that walk 3-4 times per shift. Awesomeness.
  23. During the last week my sleep schedule has been fucked. I was awake for 20hrs or so, slept for 12, stayed up for about 36 hrs after that, followed by about 16 hours of sleep. I am terrible as falling asleep and will often lay in bed for hours unable to pass out. Once I fall asleep however it is very difficult for me to wake up and I often will continue doing so for 12 hours plus. I know this isn't healthy but I've always been this way. Playing online poker for a living certainly doesn't help though.
