what's OT's stance on this? i can't say i fully understand everything about it, but i do know it uses embryos.
now if it used foetuses, i'd understand the backlash from a lot of the pro-life group. but an embryo? come on man that ain't no feeling being. it's a lump of cells. and just think of the wonders this research can create for us.
is anyone here actually against it? i'm aware i don't know all the facts, so feel free to educate me (i'm too ADDish to read a long wiki article) -
i have a lot of time to kill and my brain's on overdrive
it's been a good long while since i've been high like this on my own; it has a pleasant novelty to it. nice way to kill a saturday imo
anyway, someone convince me why stem cell research is bad (or at least let me know why it's opposed so much - is it purely down to people seeing an embryo as a mini person?). SCR seems like the bees knees to me. -
YEsss another great thread. There will be a lot of progress with stem cell research. So much that we will be able to greatly prolong human life.
-
Stem cell research is the tits, fuck assholes who value the "life" of an embryo that's going to be thrown out anyways over research that could exponentially increase quality of life for actual people

This is just about my biggest gripe with religious people and their absurd thinking. It is their ridiculous notion of a "soul" that is preventing this research from being funded at the federal level in the U.S. I think maybe Obama has lifted some bans/sanctions but I don't know the exacts.

This research could very well be the most promising area of research in the history of medicine and we're not funding it. Are you out of your damn minds?
Allow me to put it in some perspective. Human stem cell research entails the destruction of three day old human embryos which are called a blastocyst. A blastocyst is a collection of about 150 cells. To put that into perspective, there are over 100,000 cells in the brain of a fly. So, you should feel more outrage every time someone swats a fly then the destruction of a blastocyst.
They are preventing research that can heal hundreds of millions of people, potentially. This can save an untold amount of lives and increase the well being of millions upon millions of others. Yet, they're stopping it. That is no different then preventing a doctor from performing life saving surgery. They're indirectly responsible for the prolonged suffering and eventual deaths of millions. You can't even begin to tell me that the benefits of religion offset the harm it causes. This by itself should make any sane person outraged beyond words.
Reason: Added "area of research" -
It may sound silly to some people but the wife and I had our latest child about 1 year ago. We pay a company to keep her umbilical cord blood frozen for later use. It's amazing what they can do with this stuff. I have read and seen videos where they are growng entire human organs out of one stem cell. Crazy ass shit man.
-
I don't know nearly enough about stem-cell research, but I'd like to hear an argument against stem-cell research without them throwing the "religious" stance into it. I'm not sure there is one. I also think its ridiculous if federal funding is being withheld due to religious reasons; isn't there something about the separation of church and state in the constitution?

It really comes down to if you believe we have souls or not. People think it could lead to human cloning so they are against it because it OBV wont have a soul.

edit: and R_U_Nuts that seems like an awesome idea, I'll def have to look into that when I have kids -
I read somewhere that they are able to gain the same from circumcised foreskin they do from embryos. One embryo is worth thousands of samples, there are enough miscarriages where we don't have to use aborted ones so I never understood the argument against from that aspect.
It potentially holds the answers to spinal cord injuries, cancer, organ transplant/recoveries, and on and on. Other than alternative energy sources this might be the most important research of our time. -
Our doctor told us about it. The hospital also offered a service that would sell it to a company to do research and you got a certain % off of your bill. That just seemed creepy to me.

You must be coked up like a mofo today, son.

My mom has a motor neurone disease which there is no known cure for. Im all for any type of research which may provide some sort of answer to her critical illness. To say that Id be all for a cure to found is obv an understatement. This has been ridiculously hard on me and my dad but we are doing our very best to help make each day as easy and happy as possible for her
