so i live in an apt near my school with 3 other guys, when our lease ended last june one of our roomates moved out. we found a replacement but he was gona be away for the summer and wasnt moving in untill the beggining of sept.
so for the summer we found sublets. come towards the end of july and we didnt have anyone for the month of august. we finally found a guy who was desperate since his lease in his old apt was ending at the end of july. at first he had ppl willing to renew it with him but at the last second it fell through and so he had no where to go and wanted to sublet for a month while he found a new place (probably a bad idea on our part in hind sight)
our apt is fully furnished but the guy obv had a crap load of stuff so he is storing it in the common room and hallways. which is annoying but we decided its worth it for the month.
our new roomate stopped by in august to check out the apt and was pretty upset that there was crap all over the place and his room was a mess so we assured him that its all the subleters stuff and will all be gone when he moves in.
so now its sept. 2nd, and the subleter still has no place to go, the new roomate should be moving in any day now (thank god he didnt come yet). and we have no idea wtf to do. like obv the guy needs to go but none of us have the heart to tell him to take all his stuff and bring it out onto the street until he finds a new place. yet when our new roomate comes hes gona be pissed that the apt and his room is filled with shit, not to mention there will be a 5th guy living here prob sleeping on our couch.
im a rly nice guy in general and just dont have the heart to throw the guy out on the street. if we didnt have a new guy coming in who expressed concerns id prob let this guy sleep on our couch until he found a new place. but i dont want to start off a relationship with our new roomate on crappy terms and its rly not fair to him if this guy is still here.
the guy is from another country and doesnt seem to have any family or friends to crash by
any advice?
cliffs:
- subleter in our apt. for month august has no place to go
- his shit is everywhere
- our new roomate is expected to move in any day now -
Sigh. Not the kind of sticky story I was hoping for.
-
Tell him he needs to rent a storage unit for all his shit. Then he can crash on the couch, but he has 2 weeks to find a new place.
-
shitty situation for the roommate, but if it was explained beforehand that he was only subletting for a month, he should have found a new place to live by now - just tell him that you're sorry that you can't let him stay longer, but you have other roommates moving in and simply can't allow him to stay any longer - offer to help move his things, but get him out before the new roommate arrives to avoid future problems with the new guy
-
Tell him to gtfo. He knew he was supposed to leave. He def had ample time to find different living arrangments
-
Tell him at the very least he needs to get his shit out of the place and to find a storage facility. I would say you can stay while you find a new place but you have to get your shit out of here.
-
he will understand, afterall u gave him a place to live for a month. Rent a storage place for a month prolly not too expensive.
Is his furniture nice? maybe offer to buy it if it is nicer than yours currently that should help him out.... -
his stuff isnt anything special and we are fine with wat we have so wouldnt rly be worth spending for new stuff, plus it will be a pain to get rid of our old stuff
-
you really couldn't see this coming? Why would you have someone move in for a month, and bring all their shit.
kick him out/ -
my friend managed a self storage that had about 6 units where the ppl lived in their unit...

not legal but some had the units fixed up nice. -
I only got one sentence in, but holy shit, u roll 4 deep in an apartment??
-
That is what storage rooms are for. They are cheap as hell to rent monthly. Craigslist always ha s people looking for people to rent rooms it can not be that hard for him to find a space.
-
I've had this happen 3-4 times where i was helping a friend out with a place. Just tell him he has to go and that maintenance or some shit is coming to work soon on your apt and they can't see 5 total roommates cause it's against the rules. Technically you're not lying about anything cause most places apply that rule. Just tell him he needs to rent a hotel for the week and gl but for now its his problem not yours.

after reading this story I thought I could relate. However, i was disappointed. This doesn't compare to my sticky roomate story in college - my class ended up getting cancelled so i came back to my dorm room. door was locked. I unlocked it. we had bunk beds. i had the lower bunk. my roomate was beating it. on my bed. using my computer.

we were pretty stupid and were just happy we found someone for the month of august being that it was the end of july already and the chances of finding someone were slim

part way through august we realized we might have a problem come the end of the month and we confronted him and he said hes looking as hard as he can for a place.
lol ya, this isnt standard in apartments with college kids?Originally Posted by deej_0607

most of my friends who have apartments near me roll 4 deep.
so i think im gona tell him to rent a storage place for his stuff when he gets back tonight unless he magicly found a place today and is moving out in the next couple days.
i think i can manage a little overlap with the new guy but the whole not knowing when he will find a place and knowing it might be a while just cant fly
i prob should just grow some balls and through him out completely but i just cant bring myself to do that. sigh -
I mean I guess it depends on how big it is, how many rooms, sq footage, bathrooms. I just assumed like a Std 2 bedroom 1.5 bathroom apt. Ya that seems weird to me, but I def think making him put his shit in storage and giving him a week or 2 to find his own place then giving him the boot is the best option
-
Give him 48 hours to get his shit out of the place and make it very clear that he knew it was a month-long deal. You're not under much obligation to help, but you could offer the couch, or offer to help him find a couple places on craigslist or even couchsurfing for a few days/weeks/whatev.
What you have to do though, is not tiptoe around about it. Take a stand, with your roommates if necessary, and do it today.

he rented for a month, right? so he's known that he has to leave in a month, for a month. what's the issue?
ps 4 to a 2bd sfstandard college apt. unless you have more rooms, in which case "balla!" but in nyc I doubt it. 5ppl to a 2bd not so much -
Throw a kegger,I'm talking a 22 keg blow out type fiasco.
then when he's nice and sloshed (pref sleeping)beat the living lights out of his left eye.
Fuck his left eye up beyond repair, make this asshat a goddam cyclops.
Then tell him it was the new roomate, after cyclops kills the new guy.
You have a cycloptic roomate, which he can be the life of all ur gettys, cause he can open
miller lites in his cavernous abyss of an eye hole.
Even better bitches will be like awww but since he's a cyclops, they'll pick you at the end of the night
Team cyclops? -
New Room Mate vs Old Room mate, Cage death match, winner lives, loser dies and gets all stuff burned
Sell tickets and try and get a PPV deal. -
Yeah tell him he has to move his shit to storage facility and let him stay on your couch for a few days/week max when ur other roommate gets there. Definitely not your problem and not your new rooommate's either. The guy has to gtfo...that's what you agreed upon.

this.
also, stop being a bitch. you are not being <not nice> by kicking him out ... and the <heart> you lack to tell is actually a lack of balls.
good luck -
