who here has owned one? debating downsizing to an impreza 5 door from a 2006 porsche cayenne (bought used obv)...i just got a 5400$ estimate from the dealership to fix the shit and im done with that. the maintenance is a killer on that car, something i really didnt take into consideration when i bought the car back in 08. the subaru would be the exact opposite...cheap to run, good gas mileage...high practicality. i need a car that can drive in snow, in the mountains and a little offroading. i am also looking at ford escape hybrids, but they are crazy expensive

id love to hear from some subaru owners or past owners...every one in co seems to have nothing but good things to say about subaru.
edit...also how hard is it to learn to drive a stick? id like to get the impreza but i have never driven stick in my life...would it be a terrible idea to just buy a wrx and figure it out as i go? -
My best friend has a Subaru Forester that has over 200k miles and he has never had any problems. I really like it too and was planning to get one for my next car.
Oh yeah, lol at you for not knowing how to drive a stick. Turn in your man card stat. -
subarus are about the most reliable cars money can buy at this point. have the highest average ratings of about any car company on consumer reports. I almost bought one myself, but they were a bit out of my price range for a poor medical student.

subarus and hyundais are the new hondas and toyotoas, IMO.
you can figure out how to drive a stick in a couple of hours, and master it in about 2 days (at least thats how long it took me when I was 17). just stay away from steep hills at first and you're good to go. -
i know its shameful not to know how to drive stick, ive just never really had the opportunity...none of my family members ever owned a stickshift, and none of my friends did either. the only time i ever used a manual was on gran turismo. i found a few places that will teach you for $100/hr, but that seems outrageous.
-
A subaru? I didn't realize you were a lesbian.
Oh wait. Even a lesbian can drive a stick. I could teach you in like 15 minutes. -
lollllll @ paying $100/hour to learn how to drive a stick. surely you know someone that drives one and can teach you in a couple hours. its really not hard at all.
-
I'm a little amazed that you had a Porsche that wasn't a stick. That sounds terrible.

I have a 2008 legacy. Its stick and easy too drive. It wont be hard for you to learn. It snows like crazy where I live in the winter and it is a monster in the snow. I had a buddy with a big 2 wheel drive SUV, I think it was a trailblazer. Last winter after a storm the road wasn't plowed and had at least 18 inches of snow on it and he couldn't even get his SUV to move up the street and I could blow right through it relatively easily.
When this one is paid off I'll be able to sell it for 10k+ and then i'll go lease a brand new one for cheap. I def recommend Subaru -
I'm a big fan of Subaru. We've owned a couple started with a wrx (wife bought it as a fun car)....
Man that thing could scream. Ended up selling after my son took it for a ride and was clocked at 140. Cop didn't even bother pursuing, did nab him later.
We traded in the mini van for an impreza......loved that car. Only problem was it was a turbo and required premium fuel. Still got good mileage and was fun to drive. I had to make sure I used the cruise control on the highway cause I would always end up cruising at 85 mph...not good in 55 mph zone.
My son the speeder (has settled down with a 2year old) bought a forester. He loves it, obviously 4 wd and goes great in the snow with pretty good gas mileage.
I'm currently looking for a used subaru for my teenage daughters first car. I don't think you can go wrong with a subaru very reliable and relatively inexpensive to service -
I owned an Outback and I fucking loved it. I'm currently looking at getting a Forester now.
-
can you elaborate? i have been reading a lot about them and the bad things they say are poor gas mileage, crappy interior...what issues do the hatchbacks have?
-
I would be a little leary of any Kia. I worked for Enterprise Rent-a-car for 7 years and the winners for most pissed off owners of cars went to Kia owners by far. The customers that would rent were always coming back in and they were pissed b/c they were just in last week/month. I am a fan of Subaru's and would def consider one for my next ride.

Does anyone know if they make any hybrids?
Also, if you are ready to buy a new one and want to buy it in the Chicagland area, let me know b/c I have a client that owns a dealership. -
That was years ago from what i read when researching. The last 5 years or so they've become some of the most reliable cars, hence a 100k warranty. Don't think they would have a 100k warranty if people were gonna be coming in every 3 or 4 months to have shit fixed. I have yet to have any problems at all with my car mechanically speaking in about 30k miles(bought brand new).

Yeah. That was from 1997 to 2004, but having that said we always joked around that the reason they have the 100K warranty was because they needed it for the crap they were putting out. I do remember that this was the very beginning of the time that they started coming out with their line of vehicles, so you very well may be right. They could have worked out some or a majority of the kinks since then, and I haven't done any research. I am just speaking from my personal experience.
Tommy Boy: "Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of shit. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer's sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me." -
I love my 2009 WRX 5 door. It is such a blast to drive. It won't be as nice interior wise as the cayenne, but it has performance and utility. the first 2 months of 2009 production had bad bearings in the engine. They fixed them though, so if you buy a 2009 with a july or august build date, make sure the engine has been replaced already. I had mine replaced at 6500 miles.
I have 45k on her right now. I love it in the summer and it is so awesome in the winter. Snow tires are mandatory though. Here are some vids of mine. and some pics.

oh this was my first manual I've owned too. My test drive was pathetic. -
u have to stop to use ur windshield wipers??
-
this. wtf man....... a couple tips on driving stick though.. taking off in first gear you don't even need to use the gas. If you just slowly release the clutch at a certain point the car will just start moving forward. That's the sweet spot though where you want to start giving it gas.

What kind of stick car are you driving?
