This starts tomorrow night and I'm pretty excited. The combination of bringing back Russell/Rob and adding the new "Redemption Island" twist should make for a pretty interesting and commercially successful season.

Meet the cast

Some of my thoughts heading in:

-Probably in the minority here, but I hope this season doesn't turn into "The Russell Show" again. Don't need to rehash old arguments, and I do think he's an incredibly entertaining player, but he's far from the GOAT, and I hope for the integrity of the show that it's more about the game and less about the player. If some internet rumors are true, it sounds like they're protecting Russell and Rob until the merge, which already makes me feel a bit iffy. I understand you want star power for ratings, but changing the rules of the game for a few players kinda sucks. I hope the show continues to be a good competition, and not a vehicle for a few popular players to continue to shine (i.e. Russell has been in an unheard of 3 of the last 4 seasons.)

-Also not sure how I feel about the Redemption Island twist, but I think I'm OK with it. Thought Exile Island was kind of a dumb concept at first, but it seemed to work out well and become a permanent fixture in the game for a while. When you're 22 seasons deep, you need to keep things fresh, so this is worth a shot I suppose. I do think it's weird they're introducing this new gimmick the same season they're bringing back Russell/Rob, though. I hope this isn't a sign of the producers feeling like they need to do something huge each season, because it could be a slippery slope.

-In looking at cast bios, my favorites for this season: Andrea and David.

I don't mind bringing back great/popular players but I'm firmly in the Russell as GOAT camp to take that for whats its worth. What I don't like is the recruiting that Survivor does for its seasons now. I much prefer people that apply and have healthy amounts of respect for the game, even if they aren't models/ex-football players. Recruited players are the ones that end up quitting (lookin at you Naonka) or blow strategy wise.

As far as this season goes, looking at the cast bios I can't see anyone on the same level as either Rob or Russell and I think they both go far a la Steph and Bobby Jon from Guatemala. Over/under on immunity idols Russell sees/plays is set at 2.

finally get excited for this season, simply because it's another season of survivor. not excited about having rob/russell back but there's still a bunch of other new people - hopefully they are solid. i'm not a fan of the redemption island twist but i do think it's going to be popular with a majority of viewers. fwiw, i don't think russell is even close to GOAT. i will say he is probably one of the greatest tacticians but that only makes up one component of game play. in other words, i think he's always got a great shot to make the finals but not a great shot to win. whoever maximizes their chances for victory is, imo, who should be in the running for GOAT.
