And any advice on where else to go would be greatly appreciated. My Dad and sisters and I are headed there for 2 weeks and will have plenty to do in both places but I want to stay afterwords and travel a couple weeks by myself as it's very far away and likely to be my only trip to that part of the world. I have mapped it out and know that I am only a short drive to Zagreb, Croatia which I am going to do but where else should I go? Romania isn't far and every Romanian woman I 've ever met is fucking hot and the dudes are short, bald ,and ugly so those are both pluses.
I am also going to fly back through either London or Paris and spend a few days in one or the other and am wondering which place to go to. (never been to either obv)
The trip is still months away but I have to tell my father my flight plans now so he can book everything. Whatcha got OT
Thanks for any input -
apparently Prague is pretty badass
-
Lived and worked in Salzburg
My favorite euro town -
Do Prague at the end of the family part because they should see it, but also at the beginning of the solo part because it's a pretty amazing place to be flying solo as well. Drink lots of beer... Pilsner Urquel on draft is obv the tits, but can't go wrong with Staropramen, or any of the infinite smaller brews... the Pilsner Urquel brewhouse, while touristy to the core, is amazing food and a great atmosphere after a day taking in the amazing city center.
I was only in Vienna when I was in Austria and only for 4 days before going back to Romania to reacquaint myself with one of those Romanian women you (correctly) speak so highly of... so I was pretty touristy there, but there are some pretty amazing places. I'm currently at a point in my life, especially after spending 4 days in Bagan in Myanmar, that I'm pretty templed and museumed out, but the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna (Museum of Art History) is possibly my favorite art museum on earth, containing 1/3 of all extant works by one of my 2 favorite painters in history, Pieter Brueghel the Elder. Definitely check that place out. I spent a full day here including like 3 hours in the Brueghel room, which only has like 10 of his works. There's also a bunch of Rubens, a really cool Arcimboldo, and tons of art from around the world. Also a great city to eat schnitzel (or visit the Goulash Museum) and visit the opera (had to do it once, got really cheap seats at the Volksoper and washed the Mozart down with really cheap beer), and if you drag the kids through the Schonbrunn Palace, there's a huge hedge maze out back that you can take them to. Also visit the Hundertwasser area and spend the Euro to take a piss (or worse) in the Toilet of Modern Art.

Romania was all about Transylvania... Brasov is a great place, and the tiny little town of Sighisoara (the birthplace of Dracula) was supposed to be a one-day stop that ended up lasting me nearly a month and most of my sanity (woman ldo)... a lot of French foodies were visiting the local market every day for their apparently exquisite ciorba de burta (tripe soup, mmmm intestines), the beer comes in 2 liter plastic bottles for about $1, and the people are incredible.
Good luck, and do report back on Croatia. I never made it... -
Bucharest sucks. I recommend you go to Budapest. Beautiful city with great night life. Stay on the Pest side and you can pretty much walk everywhere. One of my favorite cities. Prefer it over Vienna which is architecturally amazing but people in Vienna are kinda distant. Don't miss a few days in Budapest. It's only a couple hours by train from Vienna I think. With limited time you can skip over Slovakia
Romania: Like Zander said Transylvania is where it's at. Brasov is a great town and there are tons of villages worth a visit in the area. Life hasn't changed much in most of them for hundreds of years. I love the green rolling hills of Transylvania. If you come from Austria/Hungary I recommend you rent a car in Cluj Napoka and do a road trip through Transylvania. When I was in Romania I hitchhiked starting in Timasoara (came from Bosnia) -> Bucharest -> Sinaia -> Brasov -> veral days through Transylvania -> Cluj Napoka. Then I rented a car and did a several day road trip in Maramures before heading to Hungary.
I have a ton of Romania pictures, can post some later if you want -

My mom is from Austria and her whole side of the family still lives there. If you wanna spend a night or two in small town Austria, her hometown Puchberg is pretty much where its at. They've got one of those cog wheel trains that heads up a mountain. Obviously its just gorgeous up there. Their web site is www.puchberg.at although it looks like its down ATM. Here's the wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puchberg_am_Schneeberg.
I haven't been back in ~7 years now. Really miss that place.
If you're only looking for big cities Salzburg, Budapest, and Prague are all great. I visited all for a few days that last trip there. -
Yeah Budapest is probably my favorite city in Europe, definitely do that... I've often considered going back to live there. Decent part-time English job for the visa, poker is not a crime, beautiful, ridic women, absurd food, tasty plants, super-chill people, pretty spectacular.

If you go to Vienna try the late night hot dogs at one of the stands in the street.
They basically poke 2 holes in a foot long heated dog and fill one with condiments and the other with the dog.
The best hot dog i ever had in my life...it probably helped that it was at 2 am and drunk.
Vienna is overrated imo....if you like cosmopolitan shit than its ok...but Salzburg is much more beautiful and more fun as well.
Innsbruck is cool as well...they have a glacier that you can ski on 365 days a year...try the gluwein at the bottom of the run...yummy -
Edited By: orgnalsooners Dec 30th, 2011 at 07:12 AMHoly shit dude, thanks for putting that in there!!! I'll take a couple xtra weeks and grind some online while im over there. And skiing 365??? Nice pluv, I am gettin excitedOriginally Posted by zander

Edited By: zeppelinzoso16 Dec 30th, 2011 at 07:13 AMIf you are talking about playing on stars you can't just leave the US and play. You have to set up residency in a different country. Requires getting a bank account and a utility bill. Imagine the European sites require similar, at least a bank account that isn't AmericanOriginally Posted by orgnalsooners

I highly recommend Innsbruck, especially if you ski or snowboard. Nightlife in the winter is top top.

Yeah, it took me a little over 4 months to get my stars account reactivated in Malaysia... sucks sooooo bad that Stars bailed from WA state a month before FTP, because I transferred 98% of my roll that way just in time for Howard to steal it.

I would imagine that bureaucracy works faster in almost every country in the world than in Malaysia, so you should be able to do it faster, but it doesn't just work when you're on a trip. Sorry if I gave false hopes, I was talking about moving there... -
I'm short and bald and ugly, fuckoff!

I never asked you, but why Malaysia? -
Because I remember it being awesome when I visited 8 years ago, the job was a ridiculously good deal, I was fast running out of cash and needed to get out of the States (I loved Seattle, but there's something that's just different and I think better in me when I'm on the road, and I was in a relationship with a girl who was crushing my soul for a few reasons including being really upset with the fact that I don't have daily conversations with God), my body was in dire need of a diet slash detox (weighed 235 in June when I left, 202 this morning), and I was under the misguided impression that I'd be able to resume my online poker "career" when I got here. Plus it's close to lots of awesome places and with Air Asia insanely easy to visit, and Malaysia is #2 in the world in terms of public holidays. Seemed like a good gig.
Shortly after I left, Malaysia started cracking down on piracy (killing my TV habits since they censor the shit out of anything that I would actually watch) and online gambling (some live games had arrests too, the 2011 Malaysia Poker Championship was cancelled, and party left), some fat inbred fuck named Howard Lederer stole 98% of my online roll (doubly fucked because most of my roll was on stars, but as a WA resident I lost them first and transferred everything to FTP), and it took 4 months to get my meager Stars and UB rolls online. I was told "You'll be in a town of 60,000 45 minutes from KL" and just figured "Hey, it's the burbs, I'll just go to KL all the time." Turns out it's a county of 60,000 where the largest town has about 18,000 and it's about an hour each way to KL. KL is great, but I live in a pretty Muslim-dominated town where the nearest bar (I was told one was within 1km of my house, but it's just a brothel) is 30 miles away. The job itself is awesome, but after a month in Myanmar and Bangkok, I've spent the 48 hours since my return losing on Stars and looking for new adventures.
I would have been broke if I didn't have a job within 3 months, especially living the lifestyle I had grown accustomed to in Seattle, and Seattle's an awful job market even though I have great friends there. I wanted to see something new (or go back to Japan, but for some reason I couldn't even get a callback when I was applying for jobs I'm more than qualified for after Fukushima), with the ultimate goal still being to live in Brazil during 2014 and attend a lot of the World Cup.
This is a strange place. Some days I love it, some days I just want to get on a plane and never look back. I met more awesome people this month on the road than I have in 6 months here, but I usually run pretty well in the meeting awesome people department so I suspect it's all gonna be ok.
Saving decently and traveling... if FTP comes back, things are obviously much better, or even if I just get the funds, but I'm open to suggestions for the next adventure. Particularly if it doesn't involve cockroaches... -
I know some good people in KL fyi. If you don't have plans for NYE can maybe put you in touch
I know an amazing website for watching movies/tv too, but it is all in Chinese
Funshion.com

You are turning into a monster troll
Well done
Ever been to Salzburg?
Doubt it. Your just a troll with nothing to offer itt. Standard for you
Just added u too my list
Only 2 peeps on that so far. Congrats -
Prague is awesome. The rest of Czech is pretty cool too, especially the non-touristy areas. I recommend Pilzen (and you must do the Pilsner Urquell brewery tour).
-
Jealous
-
Might be able to meet up for a couple of days somewhere on your trip if interested. When you know where you are going and when on your solo part, will see if the wife is cool if I 'escape' from the baby for a couple of days to let loose.
-
Anyone have anything to offer on London or Paris on my way back? I know both are suppose to be really cool but is one better than the other? I appreciate everyone's advice ITT so thanks to ALL of u b/c u are really helping me out. I definitely am going to do Transylvania and Puchberg and hopefully find a bunch of other cool spots
-
If i was going as a single man, i would have to go London over Paris.
-
They also have a toilet by Hundertwasser in a random small town in New Zealand. We happened to be driving by that town so pulled off to see it, kind of interesting.
I definitely second going to Budapest. The city is gorgeous at night (they light up Parliament and the bridges).Originally Posted by zeppelinzoso16

I think this is a good idea. While I obviously can't speak for this small town, it would be cool to pick a small town to see what it's like. Most people (myself included) tend to stick with the big cities for travel and this would be a nice change of pace.Originally Posted by winwin07

Prague is the cat's pajamas. Karlovy Vary for crystal shopping if you are traveling with anyone born with ovaries. Best beer in Prague - Radegast.
Cesky Krumlov for site seeing and a canoe trip. My first wedding ring is somewhere in the river there. Might not be a lucky one though.
Have fun!
