<h1>'Guido' show must go, group says</h1> Wednesday, November 25, 2009 STAR-LEDGER STAFF
MTV's upcoming reality show "Jersey Shore" claims it will lift the veil over "one of the Tri-state area's most misunderstood species "¦ the Guido," according to its press materials.
But this so-called anthropological exercise merely perpetuates crude stereotypes and shouldn't air, according to UNICO, the national Italian-American service organization based in Fairfield.

<script language="JavaScript"> <!-- if (parseFloat(navigator.appVersion) == 0) { document.write('<IFRAME WIDTH=468 HEIGHT=60 MARGINWIDTH=0 MARGINHEIGHT=0 HSPACE=0 VSPACE=0 FRAMEBORDER=0 SCROLLING=no BORDERCOLOR="#000000" src="http://ads.nj.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_sx.ads/www.nj.com/xml/story/star_ledger/nn/nnj/@StoryAd"></IFRAME>'); } --></script> <noscript></noscript>
The show, which was filmed at a Seaside Heights summer rental and follows eight tanned, toned twentysomethings with crippling hair gel addictions, doesn't premiere until Dec. 3.
But the teasers and the website for the show play heavily into the "Guido" stereotype -- "an uncool Italian who tries to act cool," translates UNICO president André DiMino. "It's just one of those words that just grates on you."
But the word is embraced by the show's stars (not all of whom hail from New Jersey, mind you), and they are seemingly not without some cultural pride: "I am a good-looking, well-groomed Italian who's very, very good with the ladies," boasts one.
The cast only goes by their first names, and they include two personal trainers, one of whom refers to his abs as "the Situation," a deejay with own personal tanning bed, and a student who goes to the gym in full makeup and hopes to make a splash "with all the juiced-up men."
"The show continues MTV's history of documenting various subcultures, rites of passage of young people, and the ways they self-identify," an MTV spokesperson says.
"The Italian-American cast takes pride in their ethnicity. We understand that this show is not intended for every audience and depicts just one aspect of youth culture."
DiMino, whose group also complained about Mafia stereotypes on HBO's "The Sopranos," says he hasn't heard back from MTV, nor does he expect to.
"Trash television sells, and they'd be more interested in making money than how they're offending a great group of people."

How do the pro douchebag Groups feel?... I agrii, should be more sex and less drama. j/k...Hooking up with housemates is a major no no tho. It takes away from not giving a crap what anyone thinks of the tail you dragged home.

Just finished watching this.
Besides The Situation, I honestly came out of this with a better impression of Guidos. Beyond the hair, tans and all the stereotypes, most of the guys actually seemed pretty intelligent and normal. Yeah, I said it.
The girls are far more ridiculous than the guys. Sammi Sweetheart is pretty much the only girl that isn't beyond insane.
This show is fantastic, and I was highly entertained for the entire two hours (DVR helps).
