Texas reportedly talks with Big Ten

By Adam Rittenberg
I swear I didn't plan this.
It's pure coincidence that on the day I fill in for the Big 12 blog, a report is published about Texas engaging in preliminary discussions with the Big Ten about joining the conference. A source with Big Ten ties tells the Lawrence Journal-World that the Big Ten and Texas have had "preliminary exchanges."
"People will deny that, but it's accurate," the source said.
Until now, the Texas-to-the-Big-Ten talk had been purely speculation. Ever since the Big Ten announced in December that it will actively explore the possibility of expansion, a lot of junk has been thrown out, particularly the recent bogus rumors about Pitt. But this is the first legitimate news outlet to report discussions between the Big Ten and an institution.
There are numerous reasons why Texas would be a great addition to the Big Ten (or any league, for that matter). But this ultimately will come down to Texas' willingness to leave the Big 12, a league where it has flourished.
What happens to the Texas A&M and Oklahoma rivalries? Will the increased revenue from the Big Ten's TV deal offset increased travel costs Texas will face by being an outlier in the Big Ten? Would Texas only join as part of a package deal with A&M or Oklahoma?
The Big 12 certainly doesn't want to lose Texas, and I'd expect the league to put up a strong fight if these talks get more serious. -
0 chance
-
This would make the best conference in the country even better!!
One time Lee!!!! -
Well, if that happens, at least their starters will be well rested for their bowl games after playing 1 half every week.
Oh yeah, and 0 chance it happens anyway -
I've heard rumors that the Big Ten has offered Pittsburgh a spot and the spot has been accepted.
BUT, Penn State is apparently not happy with it...I'm guessing because of recruiting and stuff like that.
I was going to post the Pitt thing a few weeks ago, but I couldn't find the original thread about the B10 expanding... -
Pitt thing got posted, JRoth...
yesterday there was talk of UT to the Pac 10... this is all garbage rumors, UT is going nowhere
Pac 10 will add Utah and 1 out of BYU/Boise/TCU, IMO... Big 10 will add Pitt or end up settling for someone like Mizzou, but who knows obv -
While I agree that this will likely never happen, it's good to know that the Big 10 is actually taking expansion seriously. It got old when they would try to sway ND every 5 years or so and ND basically said screw you.
Maybe we can actually get a real Big 10 championship game now. -
If they expand I like the idea of going to 16 better than 12, I hate the SEC and Big 12 current setups. Get 2 8-team wings and you play 7 conf games, like the big east does. Opens up a game to get a quality non-conf rivalry going (or you could go the SEC route and schedule Coastal Carolina each year).
-
you might hate it, but we are only a few years away from having 6 12-team BCS conferences...
the unbalanced schedules can be super gay, look no further than Baylor for a perfect example of that (few years ago in football we went 3-0 vs the north, and 0-5 vs the south, south rapes the north etc), but it will be great for CFB -
Gotcha...anything worth reading?? I tried searching back then in all of OT and my posts specifically (cuz I knew I posted in the expansion thread), but had zero luck. Is it worth my time to try and find?

And I agree on the either/or Pitt/Mizzou. -
Just curious, why all the 0% responses? It makes sense financially for both sides and isnt that what people say CFB is all about (ie when talking about the BCS)
-
No way they leave the Big XII, the conference caters to them and they pretty much get whatever they want.
-
So true Waco. As a cu fan I'm sick of it. The north sucking so bad hurts every team in a recruiting cycle no team can break without a stud team as a resident.
Just shuffle a few teams up and down to balance it out again. How about Texas in the north? At least it's a star for the north in general. It's probably as good as the big ten anyhow, I kid I kid. Sort of.
obv it can't be that easy, just throwing it out there. -

Texas Longhorns and Big Ten Expansion? Stranger Things Have Happened

A report this morning out of the Lawrence Journal-World in Kansas has Big Ten fans more excited than a fat kid in a candy store.
The paper quotes a source with ties to the Big Ten that claims the conference has engaged in "preliminary exchanges" with a much bigger fish from the Big 12: Texas.
"There have been preliminary exchanges between the Big Ten and Texas," the source told the Journal-World on Wednesday. "People will deny that, but it’s accurate."
Should this happen, it would undoubtedly be one of the biggest conference shifts to ever transpire in college football.
Sports Illustrated's Stewart Mandel tweeted a link to the story, then reminded people he tweeted the idea of the Big Ten going after Texas back in December. Mike DeCourcy from The Sporting News had similar theories.
"No one seems to recognize the genius of this suggestion, which may be evidence of its genius," DeCourcy proclaimed.
At first, this idea didn't make any sense whatsoever. Why on earth would Texas want to leave the Big 12, a conference they have recently dominated with high-powered offense, to head to the Big Ten, a conference known for tougher competition and ground-and-pound football?
Money of course.
By adding the state of Texas to the Big Ten Network market, the Big Ten could benefit from a huge financial windfall.
Texas currently brings in the most television money in the Big 12, due in large part to its frequent national network appearances. While Texas is rumored to be forming its own statewide TV Network, the Big Ten Network does offer up a ton of potential for the Longhorns. If the deal was sweet enough, Texas would be foolish to turn it down.
The idea of adding Texas to the Big Ten sparks way too many questions.
What would the divisions be?
What do the coaches think?
What do Texas Longhorn fans think?
What does college football fans on a whole think?
Is this good for the Big Ten?
Is this a scam?
Will this help me score a date with a hot Texas cheerleader?
This is almost too big to ponder. I need a drink.

a lot of the time it comes down to one thing... $$$$$
but i still don't see Texas coming to the Big Ten. I would welcome it, though. -

What would the divisions be? Who fuckin knows
What do the coaches think? Texas would worry about travel, B10 about getting blown out.
What do Texas Longhorn fans think? The rational fans ive seen on message boards favor it for the $$$
What does college football fans on a whole think? "why would they go to the weakest conference in the country, durrrrrr"
Is this good for the Big Ten? Yes
Is this a scam? No
Will this help me score a date with a hot Texas cheerleader? If you go to away games there
This is almost too big to ponder. I need a drink. Me too
Ill add another question
What does this do for recruiting? I dont think it changes UT, they have only taken 5 guys from out of state in the last 3 or 4 classes which is crazy. I think it helps other B10 teams by getting more exposure in texas which prolly has the most HS Fball talent in the country.

I would like to see them go East/West or something different in the Big 12 at least, sick of the North being a laughingstock every year where 1st team to 4 conference wins is the North champ

First thing that entered my mind as a Michigan fan, and LOL at Texas blowing through a Big Ten schedule. -
um yes, they would. only ohio st (and whenever Michigan finally rebuilds) could even think about competing with them on annual level. the rest of the teams would just get raped
