Texting while driving is 8 times as dangerous as driving drunk

    This number sounds ridiculous but I heard it for the second time on some talk show last night. I guess it's really not that hard to fathom except for the fact that drunk driving spends infinite amount of $ on warnings and billboard signs and commercials and u go to jail and lose your license for one , and the other (supposedly 8 times as dangerous ) you get a fine and you're on your way.

    When is the last time you drove drunk (Let's assume buzz driving is drunk driving for this argument)
    When is the last time you texted while driving

    Vegas during wsop for me drinking
    yesterday texting

    Not to condone either b/c both are fucking stupid but I wasn't incoherent when driving and was def in the best shape of the group in vegas. besides that town has no cabs so we had no choice

    I only text replies like 'call ya later' '10' min' , shit like that. No long texts. That being said, my goal is to not text whatsoever unless I am at a stop light or something.

    Vegas has no cabs? Huh?

    Since I started using the iPhone, texting while driving is near impossible now. Before, I could text, eat a plate of spaghetti, put on make-up, sing Lady Gaga at the top of my lungs, and drive -- all at the same time.

    This is why I am still shocked that no phone has come out with and marketed haevily a Voice to text system for this very purpose

    How do they come up with that number anyway? 8 times as many accidents? Because than it has to be worse because theres no way they know how many people are actually texting when they hit someone

    how do you figure vegas has no cabs? you must be joking right? i canfind a cab to take me from the strip all the way to north vegas at 4am but the town has no cabs?

    Edit: As to the OP, IMO, driving drunk is infinitely worse. When you spend as much time as I have behind the wheel, you learn to easily accomplish multiple things while driving.

    Honestly I would've thought texting results in an accidents even MORE than just 8 times as often as drunk driving does. Texting while driving is incredibly retarded/horrible and causes a fuckload of accidents, and worse yet, a huge amount of these accidents are the ones that the person who is getting hit by the texter has no way whatsoever of avoiding. What I mean is, a drunk person swerving towards you while you're driving, you can sometimes avoid, cuz you can see them swerving towards you while they are either next to you or diagonally in front of you, or if they are in an oncoming lane then coming towards you etc, since drunk drivers swerve a lot and shit and cause a lot of their accidents in that manner. Whereas, with texting, a lot of the accidents are where you get rear ended super fucking hard by some douche who was texting and just drove straight into you front behind at full speed while you were sitting at a red light, not being able to notice the fucker flying towards you at 40mph from behind unless you just happened to be staring at your rearview mirror the whole time you are sitting at the stoplight. Those types of getting rear ended really hard types of accidents (and then pushed right into the middle of an intersection, where you may now get t-boned to death, lulz, sfwonderfulz) suck so fucking hard. You can't avoid that shit, and texters hit a lot of people in this manner when they crash into people when they are texting.

    I hate people who text while driving wayyyyyyyyyy way way way way worse than I hate people who drive drunk (and this is coming from someone who's cousin got killed by a drunk driver, so it's not like I love drunk drivers).

    I'm not keen on always having one about-who the hell needs the distraction? When I was on the road playing poker a few years back, sure, but I don't need to take dumbass calls about nothing.

    256x more people text while driving than drive drunk. so even if texting is a tenth as dangerious it can still add up. Keep your eyes on the road people it's not a video game. People can get killed.

    i never text while driving but about a month ago i was dialing and driving and i had a lady almost pull out and hit me... She gave me this evil "your texting while driving" look but i had the right of way and she almost hit me. lol old people

    also most times when your driving home drunk its atleast 2am... traffic in most areas is going to be highly reduced making the potential for multi-car accidents alot less...

    your texting in the middle of rush-hour puts hundreds of people in danger instead of that one unlucky bastard coming across the small 2 lane backroad on a drunken ride home

    More cars to blend in with, you gotta figure a cop could pull a random car over after 2AM and run about 50% to catch a drunk.

    Doing ANYTHING besides driving when your behind the wheel is the epitomy of ignorance. If you're texting while driving, you should get a $1000 ticket and lose your license for a year. And if you kill or maim somebody while texting and driving, you should go to jail for fucking life.

    i drove buzzed to a bar last night.

    i also texted in the car before i got to the first bar.

    idk they both suck, i really try not to text while driving and i dont drive drunk anymore (and ive prolly driven drunk more than all of you combined)

    i have a really hard time believeing its more dangerous than drunk driving tho

    it's not even just the texting, almost everytime im driving and some idiot is in the passing lane going 5 under and everyone is passing him(usually a her) on the right, and they are blabbiing away on their cell phone, or some person on the highway switching lanes and almost hitting you but they didnt even notice because they were just talking on their phone, etc...
