So, yesterday, my 2 year old kid put a whole lot of laundry powder down the laundry drain and it has set as hard as rock and completely blocked the drain. I tried breaking it up and also had a plumber come out but he couldnt do anything either even with his fancy tools and stuff.
We have tried using a product called "draino" to unblock it ( its active ingredient is sodium hydroxide ) but it still wont dissolve or unblock it and the plumber also used his own acidic stuff.
Laundry powder is fairly alkaline, so anyone know of any other products that we can use to unblock the drain.
If we have to get the drain replaced its going to cost about $800 which involves jack hammering the concrete around the drain, replacing drain, re concreting it, retiling etc - a pain in the ass really.
anyone have any ideas?
thanks -
lemon juice ftw!
-
boiling water.
-
I immediately thought this thread would be asking how to make acid.
-
Try BLASTING a hose down there. Its gunna make a mess but will prolly get it out cause it will all bubble up and come out right?
-
add anything else to it and youve got yourself a meth lab!
boiling water seems to be the best idea though -
tekiller... im a genious... people will understand this eventually.
-
put something REALLY dirty down there.
-
Boiling water or something that's very acidic. Vinegar should work, too.
-
Thanks guys.
Tried boiling water yesterday but didnt work.
But havent tried lemon juice or vinegar yet - but i will. -
Boiling water
can you reach the clog witha drill? if so drill a few holes in it to let the water get to the core before you put water in if cant reach with a drill try a long sharp object anything to put some holes in the clog -
did you try really hot boiling water?
make sure there isnt any salt in there... boiling salt water isnt as hot a boiling freshwater. -

A blow bag, a rubber bladder that screws into a garden hose, is a tool used for unclogging drains. It is pushed into a drainpipe, and as the bag fills with water, it expands and becomes wedged in the pipe. The water comes out small holes in the end with a pulsating action and dislodges the clog.

Attach the bag to a water hose by screwing it on.

Push the blow bag into the drainpipe to about 6 inches or until it reaches the obstruction.
Step<SPAN class=background itxtvisited="1"><SPAN class=number itxtvisited="1">3</SPAN></SPAN>
Turn the water on to fill the bag. As pressure builds, water is forced out the small holes in the end. This powerful stream of water will break up the clog and send it on down the line.

Stop the water flow if the clog does not dislodge. The buzzing sound the bag makes will stop when the clog is cleared. -
Tough one, sounds like the powder went in, was exposed to enough water to partially hydrate the surface, and resolidified into a clog. Draino won't work because that is used to saponify, (chemically break up fats) and make them soluble. Water alone wont do it because you don't have flow, so any water that gets to it, and dissolves anything becomes saturated and most all the clog remains. The water can't go anywhere so nothing more happens.
I think your best bet if you cant break into the pipe near it is to use a power snake with a cutting tool on the end, grind a bit then stick a hose down in and hook a shop vacuum to it and try to suck out what you manage to break up, then repeat until water at least flows through it. Once you get water moving, it should clear out with hot water. Good luck. -
can we get a diagram, showing how far down the drain the clog is?
my suggestion: rent a powerwasher and plow that shit open -
You need a power snake with a cutting tool and a lil elbow grease just keep digin it will all break up.
and no im not a chemist but I did stay at a holiday in last night. -
pigalet beat me to it :(. increased ionic interactions FTW.
-
after you're done jack hammering the floor, put it to your son.
-
you need Bleach. Acidic won't loosen it up since it's already set...there isn't enough surface area to make a decent reaction and you'd just be forming more salts than you need anyway. You need bleach but regular stuff won't work, it isn't strong enough. Regular Javex is around 0.6% concentration. Look up a company called "Dutch Chemicals" or "DuBois" and you need to order 12% Sodium Hypochlorite with 1% alkalinity to keep the pH high. Clear the room as well in case you form di/tri chlorides.
-
what brand of laundry powder?
i ask because this would be one cool problem to figure out.
acetone (nail polish remover) is great at cleaning stuff...but im not sure about clog removal. -
mentos + diet coke
