Thinking of having a few of these under the tree for presents. The price is right and all my gf or mom will use them for is email, web browsing, books, words with freinds, facebook and angry birds So I m thinking this is a no brainer for christmas.
Kind of wish it had a draid operating system though but it is what it is, and what that is is $199.00 -
It is Android and it's an amazing device for $199, ordered two for work. This tablet will set the stage for lower price tablets.
-
I feel like all these tablets are going to go the way of the PDA etc
Like my girlfriend wants an iPad even tho we have iPhones which is basically an iPad mini...she insists on getting one even though they're going to do basically the same thing only bigger -
Cool I dodnt see anything about the droid operating system but then again i havent done too much research. Do you think I need to order now to ensure I get it by chirstmas? The website says "orders prioritzed by first come first serve basis"
-
I wanted an ipad until i got my iphone, now that seems way too expensive just to have a bigger screen
-
Tablets are probably going to replace textbooks in the next 15-20 years. They are not going anywhere
-
I wanted to get one too but says only for US customers?

Its a highly modified highly customized version of android. There won't be any of the basic google apps like market or maps or anything like that but amazon has their own equivalents for those. The apps are the same apps currently on the amazon app store for android. I'm slightly concerned about compatibility going forward though since its based on an older version of android and the android API changes fairly often so some future android apps might not work on it.
-
And PDA's haven't gone anywhere, they're just more robust now and called smartphones.
Unless you have a Nexus device this has been and continues to be a problem with fragmentation.Originally Posted by threeven

I could never justify dropping 600 on an ipad. I'll be getting a fire.
-
Definitely but I think the potential for it is particularly bad for these devices since it is such a highly modified version of android. Manufacturers and carriers have been really slow about pushing updates to android devices but its likely that it won't be possible at all for amazon to upgrade the underlying android components on the fire. Maybe they will though who knows. Amazon is a fantastic company run by a mad genius in Jeff Bezos, I doubt they would launch this product if they didn't have some kind of answers to these problems.
-
I have the nook color, which also operates on the android operating system. The fire is kindle's response to the nook color for competitive reasons. I love my nook color, and I am sure the fire is a great machine as well.
-
Yah I sincerely wouldn't worry about Amazon, just look at their Silk browser for example, they are taking things into their own hands. Manufacturers release updates all the time, granted they aren't necessarily the next Android build my guess is Amazon will be on top of problems with the OS and their interface. This is going to be the first tablet that competes with the iPad in sales.

Check out the new Nook tablet. $50 more but has double the ram, slightly larger screen and a faster proccesor. With the Kindle you're restricted to the amazon market place. not really sure about the Nook.

Looks like
-same processor
-same screen size (vividview for Nook, could be a winner)
-Nook 1gb ram vs Fire 512mb ram (this always looks good on paper, but without real use it's hard to say who the winner is, iPad 2 only had 512mb ram and is ridiculously fast)
-Nook 16gb internal storage vs. Fire 8gb (at first I would say Noom wins, but Amazon has unlimited Cloud storage and as long as that content is easily accessible, which should be the case I think this is also TBD after the tablets are released)
As of right now I don't see a winner, especially with Amazon's Silk browser if it is as fast as rumored this could be tipping point in comparisons. -

Wow that thing looks amazing. FTR I own a Kindle 3G keyboard (which was $189 in the spring when I got it) that I bought with my credit card miles because I was moving to Malaysia and you can still use the 3G (in theory, not where I live), and I really like it. It's carrying 1500 books around the world and takes up very little space in my luggage, pretty perfect.

For the same price, I can't see not owning one. Even without global access (I'm talking to you, 沖縄) I might have the fam snag me one of these, load it up with tons of stuff, and ship it over here. I mean, it has to work eventually right? And if not it's cheaper than an iPod and works like an iPad.
Reason: not touchscreen, keyboard on my kindle that i have now... -
25% higher price makes comparison easy Fire> Nook

With the Kindle Fire, you are definitely getting a good value. I know nothing about it, but I know amazon is using it as a loss leader, selling it for nearly $10 less than it costs them to make:

I used to think tablets were useless until I bought a HP touchpad during the firesale now I rarely use my laptop especially once i put android on it. The fire tab should be a great gift.
-
From what I am reading, the Nook Tablet by Barnes and Noble may be a better product, albeit $50 more than the Fire.
-
Agree.. I rarely use my laptop or tv since owning an iPad. I use it for 99% of web browsing and Hbo Go and Netflix. Like I was saying tablets will probably replace textbooks and with everything being cloud based there is little need for discs or thumb drives.
The Nook definitely looks better on paper, once the real world comparisons start popping up we will get a better idea of which one to buy, but if you can't wait and want to preorder it's the cost that should be the factor. -
Got mine today and I really like it. It's nothing like an Android device, but I already found a Launcher that you can use that gives that wall of apps view; however, I prefer Amazon's launcher. It's very small I didn't look at any size specs before today, so I had no idea what to expect, it's basically half the screen size of my iPad. Bottom line is I would purchase this for $200 and not look back.
