  1. Girl kills self with handgun

AU.S. toddler accidently killed herself after mistaking her stepfather's handgun for a Nintendo Wii control.

Cheyenne Alexis McKeehan, three, shot herself in the stomach with the .380 caliber, semi-automatic weapon after finding it lying on a table in the living room.

Her mother was sitting at the computer just a few feet away while her three-month-old brother was also lying nearby.

Investigators today said that the child had probably mistaken the weapon for a Wii control.

Her mother, Tina Ann Cronberger, 32, told them Cheyenne had played on the games consol for days at a time.

Wilson County Sheriff Terry Ashe displayed two guns taken from the home - one the Wii controller and the other the handgun which killed Cheyenne.

'You can see by the comparison of the toy weapon and the real weapon that there's little chance a three-year-old would differentiate between the two,' Ashe said.

'If you have a live handgun with a toy that looks the same - for parents some bells and whistles need to go off.

'Right now it's a terrible tragedy investigation.'

The horrific events unfolded in Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee, on Sunday evening after Cheynne's stepfather Douglas Cronberger, 32, heard a prowler outside the property.

He fetched his gun, which he usually kept unloaded in a cabinet and went to investigate. After failing to find anyone, he left the gun in the living room and went to bed.

A short time later, Cheyenne short herself. She was taken to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.

There has been no decision if any charges will be filed against the child's parents at this stage.

What a bunch of fucking morons. Obv proof that handguns need to be banned, etc.
  2. Lock up the parents to keep from further breeding imo

How is there any decision to make here? Dude left a loaded gun within reach of a 3 yr old child. wtf Tennessee??
  11. I blame the husband more than the wife. I mean, obviously they are both retarded, but she may have just been oblivious and not known it was there.

Honestly, leaving a loaded gun ANYWHERE that's not in your hand is retarded enough. But within reach of a toddler? WP, etc

  16. Agree that the parents are fucking morons.

The problem here is not with the toy that looked like a handgun. The problem was the stepfather thinking that leaving his gun on the living room table was a good idea.

  18. inb4 ud laughs in their face (wow i typod that and it came out dave, that woulda been confusing)

    edit: sob
  19. a 2 minute interview with the parents would be enough to decide if charges need to pressed and if that other kid needs to be taken away. if they seem borderline suicidal: nothing else to do, no charges, kid is safe.

lol I dunno about that, but I will say that I feel like a handgun is pretty heavy for a toddler to wield effectively. Unless she just pulled the trigger when it was on the table

yeah, it seems like she trying to direct the blame elsewhere. so sad this happend, but wow what terrible parents.
  24. that's awful.

scary that people like this can buy a gun.

  25. lol @ people blaming it on the parents or gun. the kid was freaking 3 years old. at what point are kids responsible for themselves and their actions? if its not 3 then i dont know what it is.

Right! Or any other dumb fuck that neglegently causes the death of a person.
  28. was the kid color blind?
  29. Wait, so the father heard a burglar, decided it was nothing, and then left the gun on the table in the living room and went back to bed? What if someone did break in, the gun would just be sitting there for them to use? If I thought someone was trying to break into my house where my wife and kid are, that gun would never leave my hand, let alone be left sitting somewhere for someone to use on me. Something doesnt sound right in this story.
  30. This is so sad.

'If you have a live handgun <STRIKE>with a toy that looks the same -</STRIKE> for parents some bells and whistles need to go off.'

You just cannot leave a handgun within reach of a minor, period.

Of course the parents deserve to be charged with negligent homicide (well, at least the stepfather, only the mother if she was aware that he took the gun out and set it on that table), but they should only be charged if that's in the best interest of the other remaining child. I'm no expert on that, so I'll reserve judgment.

The welfare of the other child is the priority at this point. Whatever is best for him is the right thing to do.
