  1. Surprised no thread yet.

He makes a political statement and then claims it wasn't for political reasons. HUH?

I am sure some people can find links to what he said.
  2. Awesome.
  3. Who?
  4.

Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli confirmed that Thomas had told him months ago he would not attend the White House event due to his political and ideological differences with the Obama administration. Chiarelli said he had tried to convince Thomas to attend the event "over the last couple months" to no avail.

this. its the fawking white house, you're the mvp, do the photo op and move on.

sounds like a West Wing subplot, I bet CJ would get it handled.
  11. Damnit, I hate that I actually have to like somebody on a New England sports team.
  12. Why do hockey teams even visit the White House? US presidents cant even pronounce half of their names.

    (insert Clinton steve eezerman clip)
  13. what's the hardest thing about being an adult - doing big boy things like graciously accepting an invite from the president of the united states after you have won a championship instead of acting like a 13yr old girl with her first period.
  14. I agree with him for not going.
  15. Absolutely not cool. Not the time for a political statement.
  16. awesome

  17. I was worried we were going to run out of political and/or sports threads on the first page. Nice work OP!

He made an intelligent and well thought out decision and used his constitutional right. He did not go to every teammate and try to persuade them in any way to share his views. I don't think going with your beliefs is akin to acting like a teenager having her first period as you so eloquently write.

Absolutely cool. Why should he waste his time going if he doesn't want to? Obama is our (the taxpayers) employee. There is no reason any of us should be at his beck and call.
  20. sooners - i guess i'm old fashioned but there are just certain things that you do out of respect of person or high office regardless of how you feel. There will always be an appropriate time and place to make your statement.
  21. it makes his beliefs seem more important than the rest of the team. I'm sure there have been plenty of players in the past who did not agree with the beliefs of the current president and still visited, because it is a tremendous honor, and if you feel so strongly about your political beliefs, you shouldnt hide from the politics in the way that thomas did. he must have been afraid that he was gonna punch out the president or something, otherwise he shoulda just bit his lip, shaken his hand, then posted on facebook about how he hates him

I am 40 and I would probably go just to not draw attention to myself and away from the team but I think we have to let an individual make that decision for himself w/o repurcussion. That is the epitome of free choice but I understand your position as well

Right. Because the President doesn't use it as a photo op himself...

He will get booed so bad, he will be distracted, when he is distracted he will allow more goals, when he allows more goals he will be released, when he is released he will marry undesirables, when he marries undesirables he will have a baby with a dog collar.
