I was reading an article on a Norwegian web page about how much you should tip in different countries. The list was put together by a Norwegian travle agency, and I almost choked when I saw they recomended tipping 12-15% in restaurants in USA. If I remember correctly from previous threads, unless you tip more than 20% your a cheap cunt who deserve bad service and spit in your food.

Here's the list, is this accurate?:
Restaurants: 12 to 15 percent
Maid: 1 dollar/day
Piccolo: 1 dollar/bag/suitcase
Taxi: 10 percent
Hairdresser: 5 to 10 dollar -
12-15 is pretty accurate.
however everyone thta works in the service industry thinks anything udner 20 is cheap. -
Restaurants are 15-20% (12% is for London)
Maid is $5 a day at least, but many people stiff the maid
Hairdresser is about 10% -

12% is a pretty f small tip.
Personally I usually leave 20% +/- a bit...but that's more a reflection of the facts that I'm generous and don't eat places with bad/average service often (along with 20% being an easier number to calculate) than a reflection of what Americans normally do...15% is standard. -
i dont go over 15% anymore thanks to the OT waiters and their shitty attitudes towards their customers.
-
$5 a room / day for a maid? are you nuts?
they clean lets use.. 50 rooms a day... so that means you think they should get $250 a day + hourly?
holy shit i'm in the wrong industry. -
Yeah - I would rather tip the hardworking maid than many of the others that I tip. When I am going for a week I would normally leave at least $50. I can understand if your company doesn't reimburse for maid tips that you might not want to have to pay out of pocket for a business trip, but when on vacation, this is usually my standard. If you go on a cruise or are staying somewhere more luxury, I tip the maids a bit more.
-
I pay my maid a salary
-
Well, tipping is considered rude and non customary over here~
-
jesus christ how many of you motherfuckers have maids?
-
~20% imo

Fuck the honesty of cab drivers. This weekend I took a cab with 5 people and it cost $16 total. I've taken this same cab ride by myself beofore and it has cost me $28 and upwards pre-tip and I've had the guy yelling at me at the end, "tip me, come on man, tip me." I think I'll start giving them a dollar top on top from now.

I used to tip my restaurant servers a lot more until I realized the overwhelming majority of servers feel that tips are just a given automatic 15-20% added on to their paycheck. My tipping range used to be 15-30% or so, and now its 0-30%, 100% based on service. I have absolutely no shame in tipping nothing anymore.
People in non restaurant service jobs that occasionally get tips work so much fucking harder than my servers. Obviously there are exceptions.
The value of the tip needs to come back. -
Have you ever seen what a servers pay check looks like?
Servers bitch and complain too much and feel their job is much harder than it actually is, but they should expect 15-20% if they do their job. Just as any customer should be expecting to pay 15-20% before they walk in the front door-- do agree if something goes wrong and you get shit service you shouldn't tip -
See this defeats the purpose of a tip, and gives servers no incentive to work hard beyond "doing their job".

Waiting tables is a minimum wage job, unless you actually earn your customers praise in the form of extra $$$
I agree that what you described is the culture of the restaurant business - but I think it needs to be changed. -
Lol I serve tables on the side a couple nights a week. I honestly don't understand how some of ny co-workers make any money. It astonishes me to watch some of the m work and then get frustrated when theyvdont understand why they were stiffed.
I expect at least 15% but I also believe I give much better service then my co-workers. I completely understand though if I get stiffed, most of the time its due to elements out of my control (our kitchen is horrible, our hostesses are pretty rude) -
USA 15-20 min
-
I try not to stiff a server if I feel like the kitchen has fucked up my order or whatnot...usually can tell tho if the server forgot to put in the order in a timely manner or forgot to get my order right, etc...
-
In NY, waiters make only like $4.50 an hour. Without tips they are fucked.
-
Back when I worked for others, I was able to expense tips.
