Source: Indiana near agreement to make Crean next coach

ESPN.com news services
Updated: April 1, 2008, 5:40 PM ET
Trying to put a tumultuous few months behind it, Indiana University is on the verge of naming a new coach, Tom Crean of Marquette, a source with the school told ESPN.com's Andy Katz on Tuesday.
The Hoosiers have to hope that the hiring goes more smoothly than the awkward parting with former coach Kelvin Sampson.
Indiana is awaiting a letter of agreement from Crean before a deal is finalized, and a tentative news conference has been scheduled for Wednesday to make an announcement.
He resigned amid allegations of NCAA violations. Dan Dakich, an assistant under Sampson and a former Indiana player and assistant under Bob Knight, took over as interim coach for the rest of the season.
The university first contacted Washington State coach Tony Bennett late Saturday night, but he withdrew from consideration.
Crean, who took the Dwyane Wade-led Golden Eagles to the Final Four in 2003, just completed a 25-10 season. Marquette lost to Stanford in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Crean is 190-96 in nine seasons at Marquette and has taken the Golden Eagles to the NCAA tournament five times. Before that, he was an assistant at Michigan State, Pittsburgh and Western Kentucky. -
gg career of Tom Crean

april fools?

In relation to all that has gone down, this is a great hire.
-
Ehhhh
Thats a safe choice.
Its like going out and seeing 3 girls. A superhot one but you run the risk of striking out and beating off at night, an ok one but you know what you are going to get. Then that not so attractive one but could be a total freak in the bed.
After getting burned by Samscum, IU chose the average girl. -
I'm not believing anything today, until it is confirmed by three independent, credible, reliable and trustworthy sources.

I think Indiana should be happy that they got someone as good as Crean. Its not like its a very desirable job right now. Dakich just kicked two starters off the team, two other starters were seniors, and Gordon is going straight to the NBA. Doesn't look like a bright future, there top recruit Devin Ebanks asked for his release from his commitment. Crean is going to have a hell of a job repairing the damage that Sampson did. Oh they are probably going to lose some scholarships for the illegal phone calls. On the other hand IU's football team is really on the way up....oh wait.

I wonder if this is enough to keep Jordan Crawford from transfering? IU is in for a couple tough years.
-
I originally said this would happen, I believe over a month ago, and I restated it today on some IU basketball thread. Great choice in going with Tom Crean.
-
Good news for IU.

Crean and Crimson

Hopefully Crean can lead you guys to more than just one NCAA tournament win in five years without the likes of an NBA All star. Did you know he was one of the highest paid coaches in college basketball? Guy thought he was a God and had a sick team the last couple of years that always seemingly under achieved.
He has family in Indiana which probably helped make the decision a bit easier. Leaving such a solid team and going to such a shitty one doesn't really make sense but I guess the allure of coaching at Indiana reeled him in. Meh, won't miss him and hope Marquette can pick up Bennet or someone up and coming. -
Very good hire for IU. I've been a Crean fan for along time and always hoped that he would take over the msu job when izzo retired. Hoosier fans should be very happy that they got a high-profile coach to step into the oncoming storm..

Ellis and Bassett are gone already. I hope Crawford stays and that Crean can keep the 2 top 100 recruits from de-comitting completely, I know they are both looking at other schools. Crean can recruit the Midwest though which IU hasn't had since Bob Knight. Davis SUCKED at recruiting Indiana and the midwest, he could only recruit like Georgia and Alabama.
