There is a tradition in Chicago and I can only assume in other cold weather cities, that after a major storm where residents have to dig their cars out of the snow on their residential streets, that they place objects like folding chairs in their spot to keep that spot. I hate this practice because no one owns these parking spots. However, I do appreciate the effort that one takes to clear their car from the snow.
Today I finally cleared out the spot where my wife had parked her car and it took plenty of sweat equity. Tomorrow I'll be driving her car so my dilemma is: Should I put out some folding chairs to save this cleared spot? On one hand, I don't want to perpetuate this tradition of claiming ownership to a parking spot that no one owns. On the other hand though, if I don't, someone will certainly take over "my" spot and I'll have great difficulty finding another spot, as they are all "claimed" or because of the huge snow drifts that exist every 10 feet or so on the streets.
I think the answer is clear but I thought I would throw it out there to OT. -
That side of the country sounds like a really miserable place to live.
And object to hold spot. -
you best be breaking out that lawn chair boy!!
-
take the bus/train?
-
repost
:)
but throw you're lawn chair out there if there's others on your block doing the same -
Since you're driving her car, then yes--put an object out.
If she was driving it after you spent 4 hours digging it out, then no. I'd make her drive around for 3 hours trying to find a spot. Only fair, amirite? -
isnt this a repost?
glad i dont live in a big city. 3k is good and im 5 min from a town with 90k and 25 away from a town with 100k.
anyways, if you took the time to make the spot, claim that shit. -
Def save the spot
-
i havent been been spending much time on OT of late so didn't realize this topic was recently discussed.
I do take the train but I have to drive to the train station.
I'm going to be ashamed of myself but I'll be putting out a few chairs. -
-
How does putting folding chairs out hold a spot?
-
No one will move the chair. It becomes your spot. It's extremely childish.
-
If that's the custom then I would go with it.
-
I saw someone put a folding table out to mark a spot earlier... I was going to tell my buddy to let me out for a second while I tossed it onto the sidewalk but then I remembered I wasn't 14 anymore and It was too cold out anyways.

Post a map of your neighborhood under "Free" section on Craigslist with caption: "Free Chairs, U-pick (minimum 5 per person)"
Should teach the Chair People. -
come to chicago and try to take someones spot with chairs in it. there either fuck your car or fuck with you or both. you want some flat tires or ganged up on by multiple neighbors getting bitched and possibly even assaulted.
-
Shit is beyond absurd
-
How the fk is this even a problem? I live in Minneapolis (obv. get a ton of snow and have to park on the street as well) and there are really no problems finding a parking spot or having to shovel out your car. Usually if you have to shovel out in the morning by the time you get back from work the street is plowed.

Last year during the blizzard here, everyone was "lawn chairing" spots in our neighborhood. I hated it but did it to hold the spot for my wife when she went to work one day. Put a lawn chair and a bike in the spot. When she got home, the chair and bike were put in the middle of the road by the person who snagged the spot. I was not pleased. He definitely had to shovel out of that spot in the morning.

Take a giant dump(like really huge fucking shit) where the people would have to get out of the drivers seat
-
My whole block is full of chairs, I had a buddy plow my back alley so I don't have to worry, but it does suck to try and park bc most spaces are covered in snow.
I have already heard of two instances where someone moved the chair and took the spot, not on my block, but people I know of, one guy put nails in two of the persons tires, and one girl buried the persons car. People are relentless when it comes to their shoveled spot, its crazy!

But all seriousness, congrats on the SB -
I can honestly say that i've never heard of this or seen this being done but i'm Canadian eh ...
Our street is a total fucking disaster for parking right now b/c of the snow and parking is a bitch. We do have a private driveway but some do not. Unfortunately with public throughfares, there is no assigned parking so you just take your chances. Lawnchairs? Really? -
So can I ask a serious question to the people that say put nails in peoples tires or smash their windows. Do they not get fucking charged ??? What kind of caveman society is it down there ??
I know brom blackouts thread they are pretty ruthless but is there no reprecussions
