kind of surprised. everyone said this was clay matthews' to lose. congrats to troy though.
-
I was surprised Terrell Suggs got 0 votes.
-
yeah, but the fact ed reed was able to get even one vote is pretty sick with as much time as he missed.
-
In before Packers homers lose their shit.
-
Steeler fan but this is obv an NFL marketing deal... he missed too much time, Matthews seems to have a lot of impact in the 4 or 5 games I caught.

Edit: Guess I take this back... looks like Matthews missed 4 games too, meh... both damn good, will be fun to watch. -
Next stop, Super bowl MVP...
-
Color me surprised. No doubt deserving though.
-
if a Steeler was gonna win it, should have been Harrison. Troy wasnt his usual self this season and he wasnt 100%/missed too much time due to injury
Matthews should have won it tho -
Troy wins the award this year as a result of the Steelers' performance this year versus how the Steelers defense performed last year without him, combined with his highlight reel material. We remember his play against Flacco and his spectacular play against Tennessee.

He's a deserving winner, although I think there are legitimate arguments to be made for a bunch of guys throughout the league. DPOY is just such a tricky award because each defender is so reliant on their teammates. It's not like handing out the MVP to a quarterback.
Was the Steelers defensive turnaround a product of Polamalu this year? Was James Harrison's rebound year a result of Troy being on the field? Or was the Steelers success this year because Harrison played at his 2008 level? What about Clay Matthews? What about DeMarcus Ware or Julius Peppers? Charles Woodson or Darrelle Revis?
So many deserving candidates, and it's not clear-cut. Polamalu is a fine selection, but it could have been awarded to a bunch of guys, and I wouldn't have objected.
My vote would have been for Harrison. -
What a joke. I have no clue how Matthews doesn't win this. He had an incredible year.
Troy Polamalu 17
Clay Matthews 15
James Harrison 8
Julius Peppers 6
Brian Urlacher 2
Ed Reed 1
Haloti Ngata 1 -
i will say this- i wear Harrisons jersey to all the games we go to... he's bad ass and by far one of my favorite players. Troy however has made several game changing plays this year. The play against Flacco is just one of several that sets him apart from others like Matthews, & I'm sure we'll see plenty more out of him Sunday just confirming he is worthy of DPOY
Im just stoked it went to a steeler. WOOP WOOP ;) -
yeah, i agree - it was his "impact" plays that probably tipped it his way. i mean, performing big, in big moments is certainly a defining feature of great players, in any sport.
-
A lot of guys had incredible years, and Matthews is in no way a clear-cut choice ahead of Polamalu or Harrison or Peppers, etc. He made a leap this year and stood out compared to past years, and the media hyped him heaps. He's a white guy with huge guns and flowing locks that flies around and makes great plays. A guy like Harrison isn't a media darling, isn't as flashy but puts up ridiculous numbers beneath the radar.

Matthews would have been a deserving winner, but let's not go crazy. -
Matthews led the second best defense in points allowed with 5 of his linebackers suffering season ending injuries.
Regardless, Pittsburgh is the best defensive and if it's the "give it to the best player on the best team award", like MVP will be, then it's fine.
The most valuable defensive player was Clay. -
lol, please. You act like it's a super obvious decision. James Harrison had 40 more tackles than Clay Matthews. Matthews had 14 sacks compared to 11 for Harrison.

Why is Matthews so much better than Harrison? Please explain this to me. -
bc Clay Matthews does awesome commercials and signs hats for cancer patients
-
Matthews didn't fuck his team with a single 15 yard penalty... ;)
My argument is that he did about the same with worse teammates.. Even the surviving players in Green Bay's front 7 missed time and Raji wasn't great for most of the season.
When Clay didn't play, they lost to the Dolphins.
I think it'd be much more reasonable if Harrison won it, but Polamalu doesn't add to the team as much as either of them do. -
troy polamalu is def way more crucial to their defense than james harrison is. harrison is a beast, but when troy can't play the steelers cannot run their entire defensive playbook. dick lebeau has said numerous times that troy is the most important part of that defense.
-
that perfect timed swan dive against titans was just too perfect, glad that he got the award, such a strong player
but harrison did deserve it and i thought he would get it, i mean, he basically bought the thing -

HAHAHAHA i just lol'd... so tru -
By the numbers, Harrison was pretty clearly more valuable than Matthews.

This couldn't be further from the truth. James Harrison replaced a pretty decent OLB in Joey Porter. The Steelers have had great LBs to plug into their system for basically the last four decades, and especially so during the LeBeau Era. Polamalu is a game changer and our most valuable player outside of Ben. I was surprised he won the award, however, since he missed two games.Originally Posted by Hughes4

Harrison fit great in our defensive scheme, Polamalu changed our system. Troy might be the greatest safety of all-time. It's probably him or Lott, I'll be a homer and take Troy. -
Player A
100 total tackles (includes 30 assists), 10.5 sacks, 7 passes defended, 2 INT, 0 TD, 6 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery
Player B
60 total tackles (6 assists), 13.5 sacks, 5 passes defended, 1 INT, 1 TD, 2 forced fumbles, 0 fumble recoveries
Which player would you pick? -
Opposing teams scared to run to player B's side obv

Prob my favorite Troy play of the year. Timing is unreal -
Suh probably deserved the award but it's pretty close.
Interior D-lineman that command double/triple teams, stop the run and get to the QB consistently are incredibly valuable.
It's guys like Suh and Ngata that allow these OLB's to roam free and rack up 100+ tackles and 10+ sacks.
Peppers is a close 3rd imo.
1. Suh
2. Ngata
3. Peppers
4. Harrison
5. Mathews
