Was flipping through channels tonight and started watching some lady on TLC who was communicating with dead family members of individuals who wanted answers. Watched for about 2 minutes before I got rather angered. I wasn't aware that there were still shows like this on TV. I thought it was rather understood by the masses that this sort of thing is an absolute fraud. There have been so many "famous psychics" who eventually get proven to be absolute jokes, why anyone would continue to believe that psychics/mediums exist is beyond me.

Then naturally my thoughts turned towards OT. And I wondered how many people here have been to a psychic, or how many people actually believe in psychics/mediums? Is there one out there who anyone actually thinks is "real"? Or does anyone believe that it's even possible to any extent do what these people claim to do?
Edit.. Yeah there's a typo in the thread title. Shit happens. -
I hope those "psychics" get raped by a bus. Fucking vultures
-
yea they are fake and i believe not one person in the world is psychic
-
they are basically the same as magicians. just without actually being entertaining (sometimes)

had a buddy that wanted me to go with him to see John Edwards some years ago. Both his parents died in a car wreck when he was like 4 or 5. that shit was crazy cause like we are in the audience and John Edward said some shit and said he felt it from our side of the room or whatever. and dude brought up some shit that he prob shouldn't know. like, how was he supposed to know their names, knew it was an 18 wheeler that hit them and some more shit. it fucked my boys head up more than it already was. so not sure if it was a good thing to go or not. def some strange shit. i remember my boys face when he looked at me when Edwards said the shit about the 18 wheeler. def the most "wtf?!?! for real?!?!" face i have ever seen in my life.

For being pretty intelligent you can be awfully naive
-
Let me know when one of these "psychics" wins the $$$ off the Amazing Randi.
-
I knew this was going to suck before I clicked on it.
feel free to ship me $1.99 per minute itt. -
You can't say something this insanely ridiculous and then just walk away. Elaborate.

And how many things did he get wrong before he got something right? Do you not understand how it works? It's just an exercise, jesus even the south park episode made it perfectly clear how the trick is done.Originally Posted by LSUfan

I don't believe people can communicate with the dead. That's total bs. John Edwards is a fraud.
Having said that I believe some individuals who call themselves psychics have special "intuition" and can "see things" but most of them are fraudulent and/or exaggerate their "abilities". When my mum was alive she had been to several psychics, alot of them were ordinary but a couple she claimed said things that ended up being strangely accurate. -
didnt u spend like a month meditating? surprised u don't believe in the mind and maybe think it is capable of some more stuff.
i dont know what u want me to elaborate on. i believe in psychic ability. i don't think there are that many people in the world who can do it. i believe there are a ton of frauds or maybe people that have discovered some small ability to do it, but can't really figure it out so they have to also u the "tricks of the trade" as well.Originally Posted by voorh33s

i've just had a few experiences that opened me up to the idea that there is something there. they are all anecdotal and personal tho, so i wouldnt expect them to convince anyone of anything and don't care if it doesnt.
there is also the chance that i am extremely naive and think insanely ridiculous things. -

Edit: This discussion is about an hour long and basically tells you everything you need to know about "psychics". -
elaborate on what "psychic ability" means specifically. So a few people can do "it', but what is "it"?

i actually think most people have the ability to do it, but most dont realize it.
as far as what is "it". im not exactly sure how to define it. i think there are prob quite a few different "its".
i guess i kinda think that there may be some sort of universal field of consciousness or whatever that people can tap into or connect with to do some "supernatural" things. (i use quotation marks around it bc i think at some point in future it will not be consider out side or beyond what is now considered natural).
so i believe in psychic phenomena such as channeling, picking up info about other people (ESP) and those types of things. but again this is not something that is widely accepted in our culture so i dont think many people realize this ability and over time it is like a muscle that atrophies when not being used.
i think most people who recognize the ability do so accidently or often it seems after some sort of traumatic experience and even then it may only be realized to certain degree and they may never have the time or means or desire to try to hone the skill.
also, even the people who do try to practice it, don't exactly have textbooks to follow and i would guess it is an ability that many are always questioning, plus i think the degree to which a person can connect to whatever it is may vary at times.
i also think there are downright frauds in the business and even amongst people who may not be frauds they can easily get stuff wrong, they may only get small bits of info and then feel the need to either consciously or subconsciously use the methods like the guy in the video.
not really sure what else to say about it, obv realize many think this is all crazy talk and am over trying to spend all that much time trying to argue about it. just answered the OP's question with what i think about it. -
In the spirit (cwidt?) of Monday night football...Come on man!
The people are frauds and it is sad to me. What makes me sad and borderline angry is that these people are fucking with people's lives. I too caught about 5 minutes of the woman on TLC talking to a lady who had lost her son. So fucked up to tell these people their kids or loved one are floating around and sitting with them and shit...
Also what about the psychic that tells a woman that the guy she is with is not right for her. She instills a sense of doubt in this gullible woman and could fuck up the relationship and fuck up their lives forever...How are these people allowed to legally operate? -
Can we add faith healers to the list of frauds?
Peter Popov ministries was making $4 million a year through donations thanks to their miracles. No idea how much Bennie Hinn makes but its probably double that. Praise the lord and pass the collection plate. -
still waiting on marinersheep to tell us what happened to him at a younger age

there's a guy in brazil that does it free of charge, what's his incentive?
-
no idea - is he any good?

when i was in high school we had a band trip to Manitoulin Island and there was some faith healer there at the school we were visiting. Someone came up to the stage complaining of one leg being shorter than the other and he healed him!!! If that aint a miracle ... -
Edited By: RyJS Oct 11th, 2011 at 04:20 AMThis is what angered me. Like that fucking dickhead lady Sylvia Browne who told a family that their son was dead etc. and where to search for his body. Yeah, they're son was alive. People like this should be shot. Lady charges $700 for 20 minutes of bullshit she feeds you over a phone.Originally Posted by xxACES UPxx

It's amazing what people can force themselves to believe against all reasoning. Faith is a very funny thing. -
I really can't explain why but I used to occasionally watch Montel Williams when I got home from school in about the middleschool-highschool range. Wtf else is on TV in the early afternoon? I remember he did a show on Multiple Sclerosis. He helped raise a lot of money for research and raise awareness. And despite the occasionally "Maury-like" episode he would often have more reasonable topics, he spoke clear and intelligently and seemed like he was an all around good guy. Then he had Sylvia Browne on his show and I was like okay, maybe she's here just for the shock and awe factor, switch things up a little bit, rustle the ratings type of thing. So I let it slide. But she kept coming back again, again, and again. Then I find out that these 2 are like pals, like actual real life friends so you know that he knows that she's totally full of shit but he keeps having her back on his show tormenting his audience. Turns out that Montel Williams is a dick.
