Well, it's finally here. Like the golf equal of a NASCAR restrictor place "big one" wreck, the narrow fairways, the sick ass rough and the table fast greens, 72 holes of doom is here.
So, who is taking it down this year? Tiger is who he is, but not having a single competitive tournament since the Masters has to be a factor, even for him. As always with Tiger, never count him out.
But who else is "on" right now? Seems nobody is really hot now. Lefty (guess it would not be fair any longer to go with the hefty reference) seems like he has not been that close to the run he had until "I'm such an idiot" happened. However, this tournament is his home court like Tiger, will be fun to watch. Phil carrying 5 wedges this week. lol?
I am thinking Ogilvy will factor into this come Sunday, seems like a good layout for his game and he is playing pretty well. He does have a previous U.S. Open title.
Jim Furyk? Think this is too long for him, but you know he is accurate.
My guess for this year is another Cabrera type winner.
Score: +3 or +4
What are your predictions? -
I am a Tiger fan , but i just can't see him competing in this one.
Phil will be there but just to far out on sunday.
i'm with you about a "no name" jerry kelly type winning.. its the norm with open. -

This is a tough one! My dark horse would have to be Daniel Chopra. Cannot wait to tune into this tourney!
-
I would love for my boy Boooooooooooo to make a run at it. Such an awesome guy. "US Open? Yeah, i have heard about that tourney. Isnt that over there on the left coast?" Guy is classic!

Mark this down. PAUL CASEY WILL WIN THE US OPEN
-
Adam scott or VJ
-
Scott has to be about the best talent to "not have won a major".
-
Tiger owns Torrey Pines. He's definitely taking this one down. His knee is not going to be a factor at all. One of the guys who played a practice round with him the other day says he looked amazing.
-
Id be surprised to see Scott competitive with a broken pinky finger this week.
-
as of yesterday tiger has not walked 18 holes since his surgery...we all know hes in great shape and all but that knee could get tired.
-
Jerry Kelly is a no name huh? $19 Million in career earnings isn't good enough for you?

If you want to make money, short the Euros. The weather will be absolutely perfect in San Diego, low 70's and no chance for rain with very little wind. This is a high ball hitters paradise, (sorry Euros and Justin Leonard) which narrows the field to Tiger, Phil, Furyk, Cink and maybe Scott. They will be throwing darts, so leaders will be under par. The greens at Torrey Pines are its real protection. They are brutal to read and putt. Huge advantage Tiger and Phil. I followed Tiger last year in Tulsa (nightmare!). The shape that he is in relative to the field is a joke. His conditioning and course management/ability to gear down won last year's PGA. Woody Austin actually played better golf for 4 days, but Tiger's 62.5 was the best round of golf ever played (no disrespect to Johnny Miller). It was 104* and 97% humidity. You just wanted to die it was so hot. The way he won was the amazing part. He took the minimum club necessary to peek around the doglegs to assure a shot out of the fairway, using his driver maybe 3 times a round. He rarely sniffed trouble and destroyed a ridiculous golf course. Tiger's knee will absolutely be a factor. However, he has so many gears, he may be able to overcome it, but it is the most difficult test in golf. He's the only one who could possibly pull off such a feat. If he wins this year, it will be epic. OP, do you know something Phil and Dave Pelz don't? I carry 5 wedges and don't carry a PW. 5 wedges FTW I like Boo, too.

Nobody has ever shot 62 in a major.

62.5

I am so pumped for this tournament.
OMGLOLWTF
I agree with what OP had to say, as well as quite a few in this thread
I think a score between -4 and Even par will win this championship..
I really think the edge has to go to Tiger Woods seeing how:
A) He isn't real (His molecular structure is synthetic, and mirrors that of a robot)
B) He has played a million rounds on this golf complex, and just on a comfort level this is a major factor (Pun most certainly intended)
C) He has done some of his most spectacular things on this Golf Course
Memorable shots from dead locations in the woods (albeit different scenarios in the U.S Open obv)
I agree that Bishtits Mickelson needs to be considered as well..
Local boy that also feels right at home on the South Course..
My wildcard for this week would be:
1) Sergio Garcia..
It pains me to say it because I think this is a bit of a stretch really
But if Sergio can mangage to drive the ball off the tee with the same kind of pinpoint accuracy he found at TPC, he might be a factor.
Putting is a different issue for him, and <strike>could </strike>will make or break him. He's had weeks where he putted the lights out and didn't ginch every other 6 footer. He will need that kind of week.
MY FAVORITE TOURNAMENT TO WATCH!!!!!!!!!!!! -
which is a shame, because it detracted from botslaughter's otherwise very cool/amusing post
and btw, the winner will def be under par this week...i don't care how hard they tried to make it in last few weeks...i played there few months ago and there is just no chance that everyone shoots over par
not to mention all the code words are out already to suggest some good scores...anytime you hear the pros say "this is a very fair test"...that obv means people can go low -
Its hard not to say Tiger obv, but I hate picking him after the surgery and not seeing him play yet... so im gonna agree with FLB and say Sergio gets his major, winning at 5 or 6 under par.

a friend of mine has actually won it. the open is almost like a different game. driving accuracy is a must. iron play is big. putting is huge. but being at least sneaky long off the tee is a plus. imagination around the greens is important as well. you have absolutely GOT TO make A TON of 3-7 foot par putts for the week. all this being said everything must work for the whole week AND a little luck will help the winner. #1 most important aspect is MENTAL TOUGHNESS!!! no crybaby can win this one. i love seeing the guys that complain about the insanely extreme nature of greens rough ect. haha take them out of your pool lol. 2 under wins and its Goosen ftw. others woods of course..els..sergio believe it or not..and woods is THE ONLY ONE that could win big..if that stinger is there LOOK OUT!
-
I would like to go ahead and let everyone know that LUKE DONALD, yes Luke Donald, will be winning this tournament. GL everyone else.
-
I hope the weiner is -4 or better...if not im fuKT!!
