i fixed my busted TV allllllll by myself!!!
alright, back in august of 2007 i bought a samsung 40" LCD TV. i didn't buy the extended warranty because i read that most of the major problems with these TVs happen within the first year, which is covered by the manufacturer's warranty. also, if i had purchased one at the time it wouldn't have mattered anyway since i got the TV from circuit city and they have since gone out of bidness. i made a thread about the purchase (pics have since been moved or deleted): http://www.pocketfives.com/poker-for...new-tv-1274266
at just about the 2 year mark (august or so of last year), i started having problems powering the TV on. it would click click click for a few seconds then come on. once the picture came on there were no problems, so it was just a start up problem. i made a post about this problem in december: http://www.pocketfives.com/poker-for...959666#4959666
in early december it took about a minute to power on. it got progressively worse and worse. one day last week it took 2 hours to power on and the next, it wouldn't ever turn on...even after like 8 hours of clicking. i didn't want to shell out 400 bucks or so, so i decided to follow the instructions in the most recent thread and do it myself.
bought all the tools, bought all the capacitors to replace, and went to work. it took about 2 hours of driving/shopping time and less than an hour of actual work time to finish. all said and done, it cost me about 40-50 bucks in hardware and maybe like 10-20 bucks in gas. so 50-70 dollars and 3 hours of my time.
plugged it in last night and it works like new! definitely one of the best feelings in the world that i did it on my own and didn't pay someone a few hundred bucks for what turned out to be such an easy job. of course, i had to drive all over to look for the capacitors to replace and it cost me more because i didn't have any of the tools, but still well worth it.
pics in the first response so the OP isn't like a foot long and prompts someone to post the dancing midget "ha ha ha, ha ha ha, didn't read, didn't read" gif -
TV with back cover removed:

the mother board:

capacitors...the bad ones are circled. you can see that they are bulging and some have leaked whatever fluids they contain:

new capacitors...i bought one of each but in the end only needed to replace the four bad ones. the reason they went bad is because the mother board outputs something like 12v and the faulty capacitors were only 10v and couldn't take the additional power. i replaced those with 16v ones. the others were all 20v-50v, so i didn't replace them.

new tools since i didn't have soldering equipment:

"my" workspace...in reality it's my gf's kitchen counter:

out with the old (right) in with the new (left):

my soldering skills shown off (right side mostly lower half; haven't clipped the excess wiring yet):

new blue capacitors all ready to go!!!:

That's awesome :D
Congrats on luckboxing your way, to not fucking the TV up beyond all hope of repair :D -
have u soldered before? if not, thats awesome and a great skill to learn. if so it probably makes this 100x easier.

I have a buddy who just blew the capacitors on his computer motherboard and was trying to figure out if he could replace them himself. Forwarding him this thread since its pretty much the exact same thing. Nice work
-
I have the exact TV and had the exact same problem. I paid to get it fixed....$240. What was your total....$70? Good Deal IMO
-
i have this tv, fml. but sick work drew. i will be asking you how to fix my tv soon.

nice read and congrats

That's sick...congrats

samsung denies any knowledge of a problem, so unless you're still under warranty when this happens (and believe me, most likely this WILL happen) you're screwed.
they got cheap and went with the lower-voltage capacitors. this is on all types of samsung LCD models...not just mine. it's just a matter of time before they get overloaded and blow out.
bookmark this thread and just do a quick google search and you'll find multiple websites with info on how to fix the problem -
Nicely done. I think Adam actually posted about this problem too. Maybe fix his TV and get Admin?

Thats awesome, nothing like the sense of accomplishment you feel after doing/fixing something yourself.
I wouldve been nervous as shit to push the power button once getting done lol. -
that is very solid work, my man.

Issues with Thread Titles: We made a separate category about this because people do it so often, and it's extremely annoying. DON'T post a thread title in all caps. Your post isn't more important than all the other posts in the forum, even if you think it is. Posts with titles in all caps may be deleted, unless a moderator feels like typing it all out for you in lower-case. Repeat violators of this rule will be suspended.
