  1. Here is a link to an article from the New York Times last night

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/10/sp...-at-party.html

I attended Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring in 2004, then taught there and participated in this same bowling tournament in 2005.

Even though .00007% of OT cares about umpiring, this is still a pretty interesting read for a couple of reasons, which I hope will be discussed within this thread. The main interesting fact is that Minor League Baseball just started their own umpire school, so essentially shutting down the JEAPU brings those students to their new school or the other remaining school.

Had a buddy from college whose dream was to be a Major League Ump. Matt Hollowell, went to Wendelstadts school and got a few games as a sub in the majors after working his way up through the minors. I think he actually runs a school now.

  3. I think he is employed by Minor League Baseball as a supervisor, but I could be wrong. I met him one time at Angel Hernandez's house, I believe. It was about a year after he got released, but I remember watching him on TV when he was working up and he was pretty damn good.

  4. Hmm... Of course MLB can do business with whomever they wish. I wasn't there so I don't know but it almost seems like the "KKK" team was mocking the organization by what they did, not celebrating it. Either way he has always known his business was in jeapordy if he never secured a contract from MLB to provide umpires as they could decide to go a different direction at any time.

Yeah I believe he was the victim of the dumb rule that gives you a set amount of time to become a full-time major league ump after your first appearance. Only ever heard good things about his game.

  6. Black ump needs to stop snitchin.
  7. Cliffs: White ppl going to be white
Black ppl going to be black
  8. Remind me, is the Evans school where you learn to make the strike call with the finger point or fist shake.
  9. Bill what was your bowling teams "wacky" name?
  10. From the article it didn't seem anyone did anything to piss anyne off on purpose. They had a "border patrol" with a latin guy. Looks like another knee jerk overreaction
  11. so "Klein" made a convincing KKK member did he?
  12. pretty harsh punishment for something like this. Basically destroys his entire school cause of one small incident. Maybe like a 1 season ban of accepting their graduates. I have a feeling that the decision will be overturned eventually.

I am in that .00007%, didn't think there were that many OTers
  13. There is a bar in downtown st louis called the missouri bar and grille. its a hangout for a lot of MLB umpires after Cardinals games. I see Joe West and Angel Hernandez in there all the time. Its a dive bar and not really trendy so hardly anybody is there except regulars who are journalists from the Post Dispatch and other random people. Mike Winters, Gary Darling, Bill Miller and Tim Timmons always come in as well and shoot the shit.

  14. Super impressed by that MLB umpire knowledge. Nice work.

I do not expect this to be over turned, but would not be shocked to see Jimmy have to come on board The Umpire School (great and original name, MILB/PBUC you hacks). Jim is a very solid teacher and certainly knows his stuff.
