  1. With the bad weather we got, i was forced to miss work a lot the passed couple week. So I claimed partial unemployment for those days.

One week I missed 4 days, the next week i missed one day. Today the unemployment money hit my bank account.

So basically i missed 5 days. If I would have worked those 5 days, I would have made $120 less then what I just made on unemployment.

soooo... im not sure why I continue to work.
  2. God I hate Democrats.

neither did I, but I work with a bunch of union guys so they all know how the system works.

Apparently if I work less then 80% of a full week (32 hrs) i can claim unemployment.

  6. Most unemployment checks are not taxed....until the end of the year
  7. Oh well of course the union guys know all the scammy loopholes.
  8. I have seen a lot of employers doing this. Basically they make their employees go on furlough once a quarter (unpaid vacation) and then they can apply for unemployment.

The pro is that businesses would most likely have to layoff a few employees if they didn't have this option so its keeping people employed. Plus those that live paycheck to paycheck are still able to meet their ends.

The con is that its a pretty easy system to abuse and it would most likely be more beenficial that these businesses begin trimming some corporate fat rather than making everyone suffer with furloughs.
  9. lol makes sense.

If thats the case, then I made almost the same or a little less then what I would have if I had works.

Doesnt seem like the best system for motivating people to get to work imo.

  11. Your employer winds up paying a good percentage of your lost wages (through your states Unemployment Program) when they furlough you anyway. Probably better to keep you there and sweep the floors or something.
  12. Unemployment is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    SFAGREE!

BTW, I was at a job interview about a week ago, and the woman said that I was one of three candidates they still considered for the job, and that she personally wanted me to get it. This is not a sign job, but a software developer job. I actually really hope I get this job :)
  13. You wouldn't believe how many Union Electricians I know who are "laid off" and collecting.

Yet they are working full time under the table. Either on their own or with a non union shop. Gotta love free money.
  14. You must work alot of overtime normally ?? Unemployment is only a percentage of your regular wage. I forget what the number is, I want to say 60-65%? ... Orrrrrr it's a different calculation when you actually losssse the job vs time off. Just guessing.
Man, it takes like 3 weeks for that to kick in to a real check out here if I recall.

Not exactly. The employer pays into a pool on every employees check and they never get the money back if it's not used. Simple as that.
  16. we tax unemployment. truly mind-bottling.

you can have the taxes taken out in advance or not. I don't know why they give broke people the chance to tax evade later but they do.

? could you elaborate? My understanding is that they pay a percentage of unemployment only on wages paid..so having someone on unemployment = zero wages paid= zero unemployment paid
  20. unemployment = funemployment

Yeah they give you the option of withholding 10%. The idiots that try to tax evade will get caught eventually. Its a 1099-G, not tough to match. I think its more fascinating that a lot of people don't even know unemployment is taxable.

  23. best year of my life!!

i was making 1500/week at my old job...

left there for a new dealership that was closer to my house and offered more money over the long term

the dealership started off slow, so they laid off most of the shop..

for the 3 months i was there, i was making 900/week

unemployment paid me for a combo of the 2 and i got 1100/week!!

best job i could find paid about 800/week

why the hell would i take a paycut to go back to work?

lol @ anyone who says they would

But now, I havent worked more then like 3 hrs of overtime in the passed like 4 months.

Im seriously considering asking to get laid off right now so that I can collect, and go play poker full time in AC.

  27. The employer pays a certain percentage for the employees that can be collected when no work is available. The more your employees collect your perctage that you contribute goes up.

In MI the max you can collect in a week is 379 dollars or something close to that untaxed. If you work in that particular week, one dollar is taken out for every three dollars made.

    I just got paid $598.

And Im pretty sure that for just the one week (the week i missed 4 days). I dont think im allowed to claim that other day the week after cause I worked 32 hrs that week.

So basically I got paid $600 for 4 days, which is $150 a day. After taxes, I normally make like $100 a day. So my math was wrong in the OP. I made about $200 more then I would have.

I think I need to sign up for full time unemployement...
