I GM a Marriott in Oklahoma, and I got a virus going around called "unemployment claims". It started out with 1 worker who filed and which I sent in the information etc to get the claim dropped. BUT THE EMPLOYEE STILL WORKS HERE! She appealed it saying "I was hired as 40 hours a week and now I don't get it". Excluding me, I do not have a single full time employee and is no employee listed in their personal files, company files or even at Acct./HR as full time. All my employees are "work as needed". Well I lost the appeal because they said an employee is listed of having a weekly benefit amount. Well if they don't make their weekly benefit amount +$100 dollars, they get compensated. Well since the failure of an appeal, she has requested to be knocked down to 2 days a week (she usually worked 5 half assed days). Of course I denied that and she is still working 5 half assed days a week.
But now, since she is bragging about getting benefits while working, I've gotten 3 more employees trying to do the same thing. WTF is up with Oklahoma giving welfare to people that are working!?!?!?! Has anybody else seen this before?!? I've never heard of working and getting unemployment benefits before unless you are a full time employee getting less then 32 hours a week? Why can't we take this bull shit hand out money and put it to the schools since OK schools are short 174 mil in funds. -
that makes me sick to my stomach. are you preparing some sort of letter to your local mayor / politician? have you contacted your lawyer for further assistance?
-
we've contacted out senator and governor about it, but haven't heard anything about it. It's crazy how lop sided these things are towards the employee.
-
Time to set your personal goal Higher ...... Or move the hell out of Oaklahoma for a starting point !!
-
Sounds like she had a high paying job, went to your low paying job, and is getting the unemployment that she deserves to help her out.
-
We used to get this a lot from our banquet staff when I worked at a hotel. They worked full-time hours only during the busy season (1-3 months out of the year) and for the rest of the time they'd file for unemployment to supplement their wages. As far as I know, it was a legal thing for them to do. My g/f's mom does the same thing. She works crazy hours for seasonal work (May-October) and then files for unemployment for the rest of the year until she works again.
This is in CA. -
lop sided? these people are doing check-ins at a marriott for $10 an hour as prob. a last resort job...seems to me they are being shafted
-
So you are GM for a Marriott and you have to handle all the legal shit? Can't you like call corporate and get some big time lawyer involved?
-
i'm really fed up with people thinking they should get something for doing nothing.
-
I get paid partial unemployment now at my job. Some days we dont work and technically, if i work less then 32 hrs, im eligible for unemployment benifits.
Well it turns out i make more money from the government if i dont work. So lol at the system... Wish i only worked two days a week. -
I worked as a night auditor full time for $11/hr. Didn't need the job or $ but it was the best job I ever had. I had the whole hotel to myself for 8hrs, just me and the ghosts. I miss it.
Enough rambling. As far as this lady, that is bad. I would never pull that crap. -
Exactly, its complete bullshit. But if they dont fix the system, then y shouldnt i be allowed to abuse it too?
Everytime my boss tells me that i might not work... i always tell him its fine if i get off. Obama pays better. -
not just oklahoma, same here in illinois. i also gm a hotel and have for years. have the same issue with only 1 employee, as due to times, we had to cut her hours. she filed for "lack of work" and she won. now makes the same money for working less hours. so fked up, nut nothin we can do
-
...and you're problem with this is what? Cut hours = lack of work = unemployment. Do you people just hate the dole moles or do you have an actual reason for all the hate itt?

Yeah, johnny. This lady makes more money a month from government programs then I do in 2 months. She is marrying some dude in jail in florida to get his SS check. Seriously...this bitch is the virus that most people hate about welfare. She has the ability to work 40+ hours a week right now since things are off the wall busy for us. She does laundry, not front desk. She quit school cause she straight up told me that the government pays her more to do nothing. I understand the use for welfare and find in most cases it's alright. I never cut her hours (I've actually given her more) but what she applied for was a time she took vacation. I had all my paperwork to prove she actually requested those days off. Now she has unemployment for the next year.
Also whoever said why don't I get corporate lawyers. The deal with that is 95% of Marriotts are franchised own. Any legal issues that don't involve Marriott directly are up to the operating companies.
It's horse shit that she has/can work up to 40 hours a week and more, she rather live off the government instead of being a contribiting citizen of society. -

I think that the people defending her are unaware of the fact that the work is there and she is choosing to be a lazy POS. -
This is typical of why the socialist agenda that has shaped this country for the last 70 years or so. If you are out of work and only working 30 hours a week...find another 30 hour a week job instead of taking money our of my pocket.
If you want to blame someone, blame the politicians that signed laws such as NAFTA and want to legalize every illegal in the country that is taking up the job you should have. The middle class in this country is being destroyed and the people are being brought on board the Gov hand out system by the droves...
And now two thirds of the states cannot fund their unemployment benefits and are depending up on the Fed. Gov. for the money..making all of you who draw this money directly dependent upon the Federal Government. Who is also broke by the way.
I have been on unemployment for a few weeks when I was younger, and laid off, but I looked for a job. Not for a way to use the system. Finally I sold products door to door, it paid very little cause I sold very little, but it was better than drawing welfare to me. And it was honest work.
But now so many Americans have abandoned the very philosophy that made this country great in exchange for an entitlement mentality...the same mentality that is destroying Europe as we speak. -
do you still get unemployment if you have been fired? if so you should try to find a reason to fire her. both problems solved
-
FUCK wish I would have known this for the last 20 years. I have worked 80+ hrs a week pretty much the whole time. Instead I could have had my first fulltime job cut my hrs, then just sit on my ass and still get paid fulltime wages? WHAT THE FUCK@@@!!!
Damn me and other people who actually work hard and realise hey, if I get paid shit at job one. Maybe I need another job. This just adds another brick to why I hate the government anymore. No reason to work hard at all anymore. Pretty soon all the people still working hard to pay for all the lazy pieces of shit. Will realise there is no reason to work hard anymore, because they can do what everyone else does. Then all the lazy people. Will wonder were all there stuff went , when nobody is working hard to make the products they like. Instead they are sitting next to them on the couch.
Its why socialism or any other type of everyone is the same type gov. Will never work. If there is no incentive to work. Nobody will.
Ya random ranting is fun!!!
isnt getting fired how you get it? If you just quit its harder to get it. -
...or OP could just kill her ala Van Der Sloot if he's that upset about the situation. OP is not paying her unemployment out of his pocket, so why he cares so much I don't know. Maybe the Marriot should pay their employees a little better...I stayed at one in St. Kitts, they seemed like they were doing well.

It just irritates me to no end when I hear people make comments like that. As somebody who runs a small business I can tell you how much a business pays in unemployment affects EVERYBODY from the top on down. Your unemployment rates can vary greatly and have a dramatic influence on your total employee expenses. The more you are paying out in unemployment, the less money you have to give other hard-working employees raises so that they will stay with the company and have a better quality of life. If an employee causes the problem or is reasonably fired, they should in no way be entitled to unemployment. Businesses are not the evil, money-hungry devils that the media makes them out to be. Obviously there are many exceptions and both employee and employer have been known to take advantage of one another, but the over whelming number of employers want to pay their employees as much as possible, while keeping their business profitable.
People in entry level positions are just that, entry level. It requires increases skills, time or proven work ethic to advance beyond to higher positions and pay. People unwilling to learn, show up each and every day or put in a reasonable amount of effort do not deserve money just because. It's the land of opportunity, not the land of "Get in line for your free ____ ."
and to the OP, I also had an employee file unemployment this year while working for me which made me laugh. They had just taken on a 2nd job and needed reduced hours with my company. The hours had been consistent in my case, so they were declined as far as I know. I fight every unemployment claim as much as I can(for those who don't have legitimate cause) because I don't want them taking money away from my family, or the other employees who work their butts off every day.
