  1. Any one ever went down to a union hall applied and got hired? How does it work?

I just wonder if it's all on the job training or if you need some experience? Do you find jobs or do they find you jobs once you're are in?

I'm debating on applying for ironworkers or elevator construction union and just looking for advice on what it is like, experience necessary, and basically how to begin. Around where i live i heard it's 10 bucks to apply and they teach you everything once you're in but i don't see how a place would hire someone with no knowledge of anything and teach them to do a job that will make them 30 plus an hour after 4 to five years of experience.
  2. I work with and am a tradesman and deal with them and their unions all day everyday, and can give you an overall idea, but being in america it can be a little different. I'm in Canada.

Most tradesmen are all member of their own trades unions(ironworkers, welders, boilermakers, electricians, etc), but most are also union members of others. (power workers union (PWU--> my union), and general laborers unions (common with journeymen)

Generally level 1 apprentices make peanuts, but they are always hired along with more experienced tradesman to learn the ins and outs. You can move up quickly, and eventually be making huuuge bank. (i dont know one single guy where i work that doesnt make 30+$ an hr)

Another thing to remember is job security with a union hall. You may get contract work that can lead to full time, or if not, the hall can snap put you on another job, which works out great if you don't like your gig all that much.

tradesman work hard and make good money, its a hard way to make an easy living.
