I am very happy to say that my son is recovering great from his brain surgery last Wednesday. He is at home know and is acting as if the accident never happened. I cannot begin to express how lucky I feel considering the extent of his injury. The doctor is a bit surprised as well and said we are very fortunate in that many kids with less serious brain injuries are left with permanent impairments. I thank you all for your prayers and well wishes.

He is a bit unhappy with the fact that he cannot ride his skate board for 6 months. I told him to take up a new hobby anyways. I can't go through that sort of this ever again.

The stiches run all the way down behind his ear but there is absolutley no redness or swelling. He is a champ :)

OMG I can't believe I missed that first thread. Thank God he is ok. Nice work on rushing him to the ER as soon as you could tell he was confused. If not for your swift action, he may not be home with you right now.

Make sure he knows that chicks dig scars. And he has a helluva story to tell.

so awesome that the surgery was successful! kids bounce back quick even from the most traumatic experiences. i had brain surgery when i was a kid. my parents handled it very well and treated it basically like an adventure, and 21 yrs later i have a cool scar and story..hopefully you can pursuade him to take up a new hobby, but try not to treat him like he's too fragile even though it breaks your heart to see your baby hurting so bad. keep us posted on his recovery plz

To OP... great job doing what you've done.

To all parents; you can't force your kid to wear a helmet but maybe showing them this thread will make them think twice.

Awsome! Glad to hear he's ok... I rode freestyle bmx for a lot of years, and have seen a lot of people get messed up from not wearing a helmet. A local guy here even died after hitting his head at the skatepark with no helmet. Make SURE he ALWAYS wears his helmet if he is skating or riding bikes. :) Congrats again on your son being ok... must feel good inside

It is more common that I previously thought. I am definately guilty of not instisting that he wear one. I would make him put one own but did not follow through with any sort of punishment when I would catch him without one. For that I am a fool.

He has allot of additional hobbies he can do while healing, he plays guitar and likes to lay down tracks with my multi track recorder.

I normally would give my kids allot of freedom but it will be difficult to let him do anything without me being there. I'm so scared now I want to tie a pillow to his head when he walks to the mailbox. :)

in 6 months make sure he wears this when skateboarding

The majority of people that suffer a brain injury of this magnitude end up with fairly severe brain damage as a result of the additional swelling that occurs after the hematoma develops. Obv there is no room for the brain to swell so the docs have to drill a small hole in the skull to relieve pressure. Gerald McClellen collapsed after a grueling boxing match with Nigel Benn and when he awoke from his unconscious state he was blind. Most boxers die from these types of brain injuries. When the person loses consciousness like that well after the impact occured that is really really bad most of the time. Natasha Richardson didn't even hit her head very hard and she still died as a result of her accident.

It was because of Natasha Richardson's accident that I wanted to take him to the ER right away. That tragedy really bothered me for quite a while after it happened. I felt so sick for her husband knowing that if she just went in she most likely would be alive.

I would have never imagined how severe it really was by how he was acting when he came home. He didnt even have that large of a bump and was acting pretty normal at first. I am still kinda in shock at how quickly he went down hill. Thank God we were at the ER when he did. That night me and a friend were in a tourney and I lost my internet connection. My friend asked if I wanted to go to Starbucks and finish playing. For some reason I wasnt feeling well and went to lay down and just sat out the rest of the tourney. Had I gone, I don't think my wife would have even bothered calling me. She was suppose to have gone shopping. He may have came home to find no one home. It turns my stomach to think of that series of events that may have led to his death.
